Howdy doody all you wonderful Wednesday Walkers around the world here to share your stories and photos with the rest of us with thanks to @tattoodjay
So a few years ago...well...Ok, maybe a few more than that... π€£..., I was lucky enough to visit the USA and travel around for a while when Summer camp in upstate New York finished.
One of the many places I visited was the Big Apple..you know, NEW YORK CITY and this incredible city was a place that I felt so at home in and so supported by so many complete strangers- which really is a superb reason to #makemesmile by @elizacheng.
Genuine people that were truly lovely and wanted to help. None that saw me as a young tourist and wanted to rip me off (although I'm sure that there were some there) but in my case, I was only ever shown friendship, assistance and even protection from so many complete strangers.
For a city as huge as New York, the atmosphere that I saw every day walking around for miles and miles was nothing but community, encouragement and nourishment- to me and to everyone else from everyone else.
Unfortunately I have lost so many photos since then, but I'd like to show you a small variety of photos that I took form the streets of this stunning city as I walked around it back in late 1997.
As these photos were taken on an old automatic kodak camera on 35mm film, they have since been digitised (scanned only yesterday) and I have put them through Photoshop, but some of them are just too degraded to leave as simple photos, so I have stylised them in one way or another so you can still see the images awesomeness without the many facets of their deterioration.
I won't go into too many details as these are all pretty self explanatory, suffice to say, when you do travel somewhere, you always end up walking everywhere.
Well atleast I did anyway...otherwise you miss things...
This is where I stayed on 20th St between 7th and 8th Ave's, not too far from Greenwich Village
And this was just around the street on the 20th St- the 10th Precint- the front door which was the opening front door for many cop shows at the time...
I was almost an extra on New York Undercover- which was the sequel to 21 Jump St..lol...but I didn't, I chickened out at the last minute and stood at the barricade of the street scene as they filmed, watching the extras walk past- and I could have been- should have been one of them....Anyhoooo....
I am NOT chickening out of anything else ever again! Well except for skydiving and bungee jumping...maybe...) Though skydiving over Vero Beach in Florida was fun..and I mean really truly and incredibly FREAKIN AWESOME..πππ..(but that's a story for another time though..π...)
Anyway, as I was leaving, there was a girl was walking across the road towards me with this huge double bass/cello case on wheels, and when we crossed paths, she asked me if I knew where Bondi St was- in an Aussie accent- which totally shocked me, cause again, in a city of ...what how many million people in NY in 1997...? you don't expect to hear an Aussie accent..(especially one that doesn't look like a backpacker anyway....)....anyway I said no sorry, but I know where Bondi is in Australia...I wished her good luck and we both went our separate ways...
Anyway, I hope that you enjoyed this brief, historic tour of New York City and I really wish that I had all of those photos that I took to show you here...
When I got to New Orleans (eventually..) I was showing someone some of my photos and to my horror, discovered that there were so many packets of them missing, and instead, somehow I had a few plastic sleeves of someone elses negatives with me instead!
I looked through these negatives and did not recognise 1 person or scene in them, so one day I'm going to scan them, upload them and hopefully find their owner as their was some family memories on them if I remember correctly...And you never know, mine might come back to me someday too...
Actually I might do that tomorrow...π πππ·πππ¦πΈππΏπ¦π’ππ¦ππ¦π₯ππ¦πππ¦πͺπ¦π³ππ¦π¦ππ’πππ
