WhatsApp is back up after it went down a little after 4pm. The popular messaging service, owned by Facebook, was also down in countries like the United States, Britain, India and Singapore.
Complaints flooded social media network Twitter with various hashtags such as #WhatsAppDown.
At this point it's not clear what caused the downtime. WhatsApp used to maintain an account on Twitter at @wa_status to post the status of the service but it has gone dormant since 2014.
DownDetector, a site that reports on downtimes, has received 1,704 reports of outages so far. Based on the map on DownDetector, Singapore, Jakarta and some parts of Europe were the most affected.
According to Outage.Report the service was also down in several parts of the world on Sept 22, three times in August, June 1, three times in May and Apr 19. It suffered its biggest outage on May 3.
Even though the service was down for less than an hour, it caused a lot of frustration, as it’s one of the top messaging service. Maybe it’s time to have an an alternative or two such as Telegram, WeChat or Facebook Messenger.
