I will be joining the lower rail to the stiles with a double tenon and mortice joint. Having squared up the stock, I used a 3/8 mortice chisel to set the spacing on the marking gauge. This will make all my cuts consistent.
I sawed off the tenon cheeks on the end of the rails
Then chopped out the waste between the tenons.
Transfered the width of the tenons to the stiles.
Chopped out the mortices.
Sawed a kerf into the end of the tenons and shaped wedges from a contrasting hardwood.
Pounded in the wedges.
Cut them flush.
Checked for squareness.
Rinse and repeat.
Next time, dovetails for the top rails.
