On this date, environmental groups and citizens from around the world are demonstrating and protesting against the incineration of waste by demanding that governments stop this polluting technology.
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Geneva, of which Argentina is a signatory, identifies all waste incinerators, including cement kilns, among the main sources of dioxins in the environment and recommends the use of alternative technologies to prevent the emission of these toxins.
According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), incinerators are responsible for 69% of global dioxin emissions. The emissions of the incineration and the toxic ashes they produce have been linked to the contamination of the environment, food and breast milk throughout the world.
Dioxins are highly toxic substances that accumulate in fats and can cause congenital malformations, reproductive problems, damage to the immune system and cancer.
More than 200 NGOs from 62 countries will carry out actions calling on governments to ban this polluting technology, which affects the health, quality of life and environment of the population. According to the Stockholm Convention signed by our country in 2001, incinerators and crematoria are the source of emission of Dioxins, Furans and heavy metals into the environment. Its objective is the elimination of the emission of these substances
