My friend and I were out sightseeing today.
He is older than I,
And had expressed his not having observed any graveyards
Here in Atlanta.
I took him to several, including one near
Where I used to live, which offers one of the best views
Of Atlanta from a distance.
It is on a high hill.
When he got out of my van, not knowing that I had brought us
There for the view, he was walking around, looking
At the grave markers, calculating the age of those
Buried there.
Before I turned him around to see
The view
(I must confess to some puzzlement and yes, some annoyance),
He uttered a Very Profound Comment. He said:
“I have no future, Only Plans”.
That struck me as so poignant in our
Current state of affairs.
None of us are promised not One more day,
But we make plans as if we’ll live forever,
Having hopes for the best outcomes.
As soon as we SEE this reality,
We might start living in the present, and just
BE here for each other, in each and every moment of THIS
Day.
When I got him to turn and look at the city, he was
Overwhelmed.
I have learned a great thing from him
Today, or should I say something I believed already
Was greatly reinforced;
Live for the now.
