The sambar is also a large deer and has long legs, dark brown skin and hair, darker stomach to darkness, stiff, rough and short hair. Adult males have long and dense hairs in the neck and over the head. Sambar deer reach adulthood at 8 months and can live until age 11 years. The color of sambar feather is generally brown with a somewhat blackish variation (dark) on the males or the old ones. The tail is rather short and covered with feathers long enough. The state of the feathers including rough and not too tight. In the lateral neck region, the fur forms a mane. The change in the color of the feathers from bright brown to darker, especially in dominant males, is often seen simultaneously with the entry of males into the breeding season.
