Ever get the feeling that nothing you do or say will change anything? The problem is so big, like climate change, discrimination, or racism and it feels like anything you do has no effect. The polar ice cap keeps melting, and people still hate. It can seem overwhelming, I know. I have found myself wondering “why bother? Nothing I do will make a difference.” Then I remember how often in my own experiences all it took was one person who said or did something that impacted me profoundly: Teachers that have inspired, friends that have persevered, or strangers that have motivated me. These experiences aren’t always positive, uplifting ones either. Sometimes what I have learned is how not to be (mean, spiteful, hateful), and other times I have been inspired by profound humanity. Each of these experiences have been a gift—and that is not nothing.
