Hello fellow Steemians and welcome to my review of the Barbadian flag! This is the 15th flag that I will be covering in my series to cover most of the flags of the world!
While doing my research of the country i found a really interesting fact that i would like to write here, most countries are Republic of X or Kingdom of Y or People's Republic of Z, but Barbados is just Barbados, simple, i like it!
Today's Flag is the Flag of Barbados!
The flag of Barbados is a vertical triband with 2 ultramarine blue stripes on the left and right bands and a golden band in the middle with a black trident head on it. The design of this flag was adopted on November 30th of 1966 in the Island's first independence day. The flag was designed by Grantley Prescod and was chosen from a competition by the Barbados Government.
Meanings
The ultramarine blue at both sides of the flag represent the clear blue skies above the island and the Caribbean Sea to the left and the Atlantic ocean to the right of the island.
The golden band in the middle represents the riches of the country and the sands on the beaches.
The broken trident has a very complex meaning, the trident symbol was initially in the colonial flag of Barbados, where Britannia was holding the trident of Poseidon. The trident is now broken, symbolizing the country's break away from the United Kingdom (you can check this flag out in the other flags section)and the three points of the trident represent the three principles of democracy:
- Government of the People
- Government for the People
- Government by the People
Other Flags!
This is the flag of the Colony of Barbados, it was the flag that identified the country while in was a colony and it has Britannia holding the trident of Poseidon like mentioned above.
This is the Flag of the West Indies Federation, a union of Islands in the Caribbean sea that formed a nation that lasted for 4 years, from 1958 to 1962 after gaining their independence from the United Kingdom. I really like this flag, if it had a trident it would be way cooler too!
