With the extensive use of mobile phones we are almost losing touch on writing. I try to keep my writing practice going but it does not happen regularly. Once a week or so I make it a point to write one page so that my handwriting remains sane. But I observe that when I am writing I get confused with spellings and grammar. I have to pause and think over before completing the sentence. And spelling mistakes are frequent. I am getting so used to the auto spell check and the prompting dictionary which immediately corrects the wrong spelling that when I write I am in a confused state sometimes. I was writing a letter and I had to use the word, Center. I was thinking if I should write Center or Centre, then I googled...hehehe and it said both are right.
Just like this word Center, there are some other words as well like ambiance or ambience what is the correct spelling, adviser or advisor and then there is inquire or enquire, theatre or theater? What do you use, all of them are correct. This is a different thing then the normal writing practice where we have lost touch. Pheww....sometimes I feel that English is the most complicated language.
I guess in a few more years with the auto correction I am going to completely go blank on my spellings. Nowadays when I write I fumble on simple words also and then I need to tax my brain to recollect. When we are typing it is easy to write words but when we are hand writing it just seems to be difficult. I can type pages at one go but when it comes to writing maximum 2 to 3 pages and my hand gets tired. I guess in a matter of few years' handwritings will go extinct and the new generation will start right from the beginning at an early age on gadgets. Whenever I am filling up some important document in handwriting then I am extra cautious to not make any mistakes and be neat as much as possible.
In my school days I had very beautiful cursive handwriting, but now if someone has to see my handwriting it feels like crows are flying all over the page...hehehehe. Predictive text on gadgets does not make it important for us to know the exact spelling and now speech to text is altogether taking away that little ability also of remembering our spellings.
I believe that handwritings carry a lot of sentimental value and personally I am going to keep making that effort to write regularly and keep my writing practice going. What about you?
