Wonderful insights, @vaughndemont. Brandon Sanderson has videos uploaded to YouTube of his writing class and he discusses this at length as well. If it were me, I'd take a small advance, and if there were any subsidiary rights involved, I'd keep that to myself. Mostly because I don't trust most filmmakers to craft a proper adaptation of, well, anything, really.
