It was a perfect sequence of events that Stephanie found herself in a terrifying situation. She remembered that she was listening to her favorite music station, drinking coffee, and applying her favorite dream cream on her body.
Suddenly, Stephanie awakened to a dark deadly silence. She thought she heard someone speaking in a different language, but whoever was in the other room was hidden from her sight.
She could smell a fire going and felt around to touch the space around her, but could only hear the rhythm of her heart beating. She thought she could hear a train in the distance but could see nothing. She reached out in front of her and thought she saw an invisible shadow play across the wall that kept her captivate in fear.
Stephanie knew she had to keep calm and breathe slowly. If only she was not so thirsty! Her vision was blurry and for a second she thought she saw bluebirds flying around the room. She must be hallucinating and realized she had been drugged. There was a metallic taste in her mouth.
She paused and thought she heard footsteps coming closer. The door opened and a man walked in with a swan t-shirt on causing a light wind to blow across her face. He was wearing the pearls her mother had given her and held a candle in his hand.
She held back a scream for help as the man told her to heal and to focus on getting better. His voice was smooth to the ears and she knew he was going to play her like every predator she had ever met.
The man smelled like smoke and tiptoed out of the room. Stephanie could not imagine that this would ever happen to her, and forced her thoughts to Hawaii and the clear blue waves. The coolness of the water hitting her body. She was jolted out of her fantasy by a whisper from someone in the next room. She had to listen closely as the words sounded far away.
She heard the words grow, the trees are nearby, and reach for the doorknob. She was still dizzy from the drugs but she opened the door and ran for the nearest shelter underneath some trees. She remembered she had to keep moving and ran until there was an ache in her lungs. The cotton dress she wore was soaked with sweat but she had to smile to herself that she escaped his control.
She thought she understood the instructions on how to get out of there and felt a sense of serenity, until she heard the dogs coming. She seldom recalled a time that her world caved in on her, but this was a fucking masterpiece of a situation. She smelled the dirt on her body and saw a dandelion as she kept running for her life.
Her feet were bloody but a sense of joy was within her as she was so close to freedom. She remained strong ...
