These elections are historic, in that it is the first time since independence 4 decades ago that Mugabe does not appear on the voting ballot.
There was a sigh of relief when he was ousted in a coup in everything but name only, by his own party, a little while back, but there are now threats of protests and other disturbances.
The country is still heavily divided along ethnic lines with the rural Shona majority supporting the incumbent ZANU-PF party which is heavily made up of Shona's and makes hand-outs and benefits to that majority to continue ensuring their support.
Voter turn out was high yesterday at 75% but claims of vote rigging by the opposition and both parties already claiming victory is not the greatest follow up to what was a very peaceful poll so far.
Lets hope things can continue to proceed peacefully and that the county can rise from the ashes. It was an economic powerhouse and agricultural paradise before... it can be that again if only the politicians would stop meddling and get on with rebuilding the country.
