Ethereum can still (at present) be mined for profit using a decent card. Zcash is also quite popular. Cryptocompare.com is a good website. It shows various cards & rigs and how much each one can make

I think that's just a red herring used by people who are scared of Bitcoin & other cryptocurrencies. The majority of black market trade is still done in fiat and some in precious stones and metals.
