Eat breakfast at the Volcano House restaurant one day. I could have spent the entire day drinking coffee and looking at the view. Bring a small flashlight and see the crater at night from the observatory.

It depends where you go. In most of the lava fields that are decades old, the forest is coming back. In the newer lava flows or the base of the (active) caldera, there isn't much of anything. You can,

Thanks! The big island is for sure worth a few trips. Somewhere on the coast of Texas is on my list of places I'd like to visit next. But I don't know exactly where to go, because it's just so big.
