I agree, it's the curation system that needs fixing to support retention. All we have now are die-hards, not Joe-soaps, and Joe-soaps need serious utility, not ideology or additional rewards for the die-hards.

I don't think you are appreciating the complexity of the reward, incentive and moderation, curation system in Stack Exchange. It's really non-trivial. It's not a simple thread structure, it's a delicate

Sorry to spam your post but as you liked mine I thought it would be interesting to your readers: Curated tags would really help the curation of post-categories like recipes and smoothies.

Another follow on from this is that entire communities would develop around specific tags, just like subreddits, except that moderation would be decentralised.
