Hello, dear Steemians!
Tradition is an important and undeniable part of our human society. Cultures hold their values together by the glue of tradition and work their way to preserve such values with the utmost respect and devotion.
But young people and newer generations often find it difficult to respect some of our oldest traditional standpoints and often act rebellious in face of tradition.
How much respect do we owe tradition?
If you respect tradition, you will be highly venerated in your own society. People see themselves as heir to the legacy of rich traditions, especially old people who would go to great lengths to preserve these traditions.
But if you have ever wondered if you should respect tradition, then you need to understand one truth: Tradition should be respected, so long as it supports your independence of thought and common sense.
Some traditions essentially do not make any sense, and it is pointless to give them an amount of respect that they simply do not deserve, for the mere sake of being tradition.
Because traditions themselves should not be of any value. What should matter is the value of the work itself, and not the tradition. I will make my point by telling you a story.
There was once a king who lived in a great castle. The castle had a courtyard guarded by many watchmen day and night. One day, he was taking a walk in the courtyard when he saw a watchman standing guard near a bench.
The king thought to himself. Every guard in the courtyard had a purpose for being there.
For example, two guards stood near the gates, and two guards stood near the doors of the palace. Another guard followed the king wherever he went.
So, he wondered, ‘What is the purpose of the guard standing next to the bench?’
The commander of the watchmen was brought before the king to answer the question.
He did not know why. He told the king that in the last 30 years, there has always been a guard standing near that bench.
They went to the previous commander and asked him why there was a guard near the bench. The commander thought for a moment, then recalled a memory from the olden days.
‘Your father had ordered the castle to be painted, my king.’ The commander said, ‘And you were just a child then, and used to play in the courtyard. So, for two days, we positioned a guard there to stop you from sitting on the chair and get yourself dirty with paint.’
The moral point of that story is basically some of the things that we do because people that came before us used to do them, but we do not have any reasonable explanation for doing them.
Tradition is a powerful aspect of culture, but it should not be exploited to the point of utter lunacy and ridicule.
It is not just about traditions. Take a look at everything you feel compelled to do because the people that came before you used to do them. Is that a reasonable justification for you to do things that you may not want to do?
Think about your predispositions and your commitment to tradition.
Often enough, we find that we have pointlessly bound our life by things that do not really matter.
