It recently became even more obvious just how much of a difference plane size makes. I had the chance to fly on a larger aircraft again—not for a long-haul international trip, but for a domestic route that just happened to be served by a wide-body plane. The difference was immediate and noticeable. The cabin felt more spacious, the ride smoother, and the entire experience more comfortable from takeoff to landing.
One of the most striking things was how well the aircraft handled weather. Because larger planes can fly at higher altitudes and tend to be more stable, turbulence was minimal. It was one of the smoothest flights I’ve had in a long time. On the return leg of the trip, I was back on a smaller regional jet, and the contrast couldn’t have been clearer. That flight ran into some rough patches due to weather, and the smaller size of the plane amplified every bump and drop. It was a much more stressful experience.
There’s no doubt that the airline industry has become laser-focused on efficiency and cost-cutting. Unfortunately, this often means passengers pay the price—not just with higher ticket prices, but also with a downgraded experience. Smaller planes may be more economical for airlines, but they often sacrifice comfort, stability, and peace of mind for those of us onboard.
All of this points to a broader issue within the industry. Air travel seems overdue for real innovation and disruption. The system we have now often feels like a race to the bottom, where the goal is to fit more passengers into tighter spaces on smaller jets. While any disruption would require enormous capital and face significant regulatory and infrastructure challenges, the appetite for a better flying experience certainly exists.
For now, I’ll be keeping an eye out for flights served by larger aircraft whenever possible. Even if it means adjusting travel plans slightly, the improvement in comfort and overall experience is well worth it.
