Makemake was first seen in March 2005 at the Palomar Observatory in California by three scholars carrying out a survey. The team led by Professor Mike Brown included Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz.

Nicknamed MK 2 and provisionally designated S/2015 (136472) 1, it is estimated to be 160 km in diameter. The moon was spotted about 20,000 km from Makemake in observations made by the Hubble Space Telescope
