Edwin Powell Hubble was born on the 20th November 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri, U.S.A.
After having his education in Missouri he entered the Universities of California and Chicago successively, and studied law.
He took degrees in Law and practised as a lawyer for some time.
Then he left his career in law and started to study astronomy. He excelled in the field within a short period.
In 1919 Hubble joined the staff of the Mount Wilson Observatory, U.S.A. where he was the first to show that the ‘nebulae’ are actually ‘galaxies’ like our own.
He was also the first to show that the large-scale structure of the universe is homogenous.
In 1929 Hubble gave the first evidence for the expansion of the universe.
Edwin Hubble Powell passed away in San Marino, California on the 28th September 1953.
H.S.T. or the Hubble Space Telescope that was placed in Earth orbit by the Space Shuttle in 1990 was named after Hubble, in his honour.
