The 50 Cent Meal Part 4
Yep, we're still stretching out that same chicken.
Ok so at this point we have options, actually we've had options throughout this thing I've just been showing you what I'm doing lately.
We are now up to $7 total spent and have now had 16 total meals from this one chicken, some salt, flour and half a large bag of egg noodles.
We've reached our goal of 50 cents per meal and there's no way I'm stopping here. My parents hit 10 cents a meal remember?
Let's keep going...
Now we boil the whole chicken again.
Yep, all that is left, you better not have been throwing skin, bones or anything else out cause we want all of that still.
Recently I called my mom and spoke with her about boiling chicken more than once.
Told her I was going to boil it twice.
She responds with "At least twice, boil it until you can't taste chicken."
Ok well her saying that was inspiring because it does take a lot of boiling to lose that chicken flavor. Anywhere you have that chicken flavor you also have all the nutrients the chicken had. It will not all come out first boil.
Her saying that also made me remember some pretty bland meals growing up...
So we won't boil this thing until we cannot taste chicken as she suggested lol.
We will boil the whole thing a second time though. Boiling this second time, depending on how many people you're feeding and how quick things are being eaten... is also your way of keeping the chicken carcass good for longer without refrigeration as well.
Each time you boil it you can store it again in the fridge or room temp for as long as you were originally comfortable storing it. So it's like a reset on your shelf life if you're careful and are sure it hasn't spoiled before re boiling.
Ok, so boil in 2 gallons of water again like before for one hour ish.
You'll get the same 1.5 gallons of broth as we just made chicken noodle out of.
If you want to you can make the very same chicken noodle recipe here with the last half of the bag of egg noodles.
I like to switch it up here though.
Do like before, pull 4 cups (1 quart), put it in a jar and quick seal it. We now have 8 cups of broth being stored like this.
So this time I like to make a chicken rice instead of noodle.
Essentially it's the same as the chicken noodle as far as how to make it but it's a different dish so you don't feel like you're eating the same things over and over. You'll salt and pepper the broth till it tastes good.
When the carcass cools you'll pull all the rest of the meat from it and add that meat to your broth.
Then add rice and cook the rice into it.
The main difference here is that rice will eventually soak up all of the broth, making for a dryer rice meal as opposed to the soup.
This chicken rice will again give my son and I both 3 meals each for a total of 26 meals now from one chicken, some flour, salt, pepper and rice. (maybe milk if you did a milk gravy before).
The chicken rice takes about 4 cups of rice. That is around 2 lbs dry weight and I pay near 50 cents per pound so we just added 1 dollar to this stretch.
We're now up to 22 meals from Only $8. We have the carcass left without any meat left on it and 8 cups total of broth we stored form the chicken noodle and chicken rice.
Guys we just hit 36 cents a fucking meal and guess what?
We're still going.
To be continued...
