The Web3 Shift
This mindset has naturally led me to Splinterlands, my primary web3 gaming experience. It’s been a wild ride filled with its fair share of highs and lows, but the game continues to captivate me. Whether it’s completing card sets, managing land development, or staying engaged with the ever-evolving ecosystem, Splinterlands offers a sense of accomplishment that traditional gaming rarely provides.
Yet, as much as I love Splinterlands, web3 gaming has its challenges. The financial aspect—the investments, the strategies, and the economics—adds a layer of complexity that’s both exciting and exhausting. It’s rewarding but also requires a level of focus that sometimes feels less “game-like” and more like work.
The Pull of Web2 Gaming
Despite my focus on web3, I still find myself drawn to traditional (web2) gaming, particularly for one key reason: playing with friends. Some of my closest friendships have been forged in the worlds of web2 games, where the primary focus is collaboration and fun, untainted by financial considerations.
While Splinterlands has introduced me to an amazing community, the dynamics are different. Conversations in web3 often revolve around strategies, investments, and earning potential, whereas web2 gaming is more about camaraderie and pure enjoyment. It’s a balance I’ve yet to fully reconcile, but one that keeps me toggling between the two worlds.
The Future of Gaming
I can’t help but wonder if these two worlds—web2 and web3—will eventually converge. Imagine a gaming experience where earning potential seamlessly integrates with the pure joy of gaming with friends. It feels inevitable as blockchain technology continues to evolve, and I’m eager to see how this will shape the industry.
2024 Gaming Hours Recap
Looking back, I’m confident that I’ve spent more time in Splinterlands than the 150 hours I poured into my top two web2 games this year. It’s a testament to how much the web3 space has captured my attention, even if I occasionally long for the simplicity of traditional gaming.
As I move into 2025, I’m excited to see where gaming takes me—whether it’s diving deeper into web3, revisiting old favorites in web2, or discovering new ways to blend the best of both worlds. For now, I’ll continue to enjoy the journey, one battle and one adventure at a time.
