It’s not surprising when you look at the broader trends. The gaming industry experienced an explosive boom during the pandemic, when people were home, seeking entertainment, and naturally gravitated toward video games and online content. Streaming platforms, live tournaments, and eSports leagues all rode that wave to impressive new heights. But that boom wasn’t going to last forever.
Now, as more outdoor activities have returned, workplaces have resumed in-person operations, and the balance of screen time has started to shift, we’re seeing a clear decline in video game engagement — and eSports has felt the effects. Viewership numbers are down, team sponsorships are harder to come by, and some leagues are struggling to stay financially viable. It’s a tough environment for organizations that once banked on continued exponential growth.
That said, I don’t believe this is the end of eSports — far from it. We’re in a period of recalibration. The economics have to be realigned, and the industry needs to get smarter about monetization, partnerships, and audience retention. But the core interest is still there. Entertainment continues to go digital, and younger generations are growing up with eSports as a core part of their media diet.
Like any evolving space, there will be highs and lows. I remain optimistic that eSports will find its footing again — perhaps with different business models or more efficient league structures. In the meantime, as a fan, I’ll keep supporting the events, the players, and the games that make this such a unique and dynamic part of the modern entertainment landscape.
