Siempre he sido un fiel defensor de la idea de que “no hay sentimiento ni emoción negativa y cada una es tan valiosa como la otra”, pero lo cierto es que al llegar al tema del resentimiento me pregunto: ¿Puede el resentimiento dar algo positivo a la vida? ¿O es momento de refutar mi idea que por tanto tiempo he mantenido bajo un buen criterio? Y es que no cabe duda que detrás de cada historia o experiencia escrita con el guion de este sentimiento, parece siempre llevar al mismo destino, uno marcado con el dolor, el sufrimiento y la impotencia de no superar aquello que tanto daño nos hace.
Anteriormente yo pensaba en el resentimiento como “resentir algo que nos afecta”, y quizás en base a eso lo veía desde un punto de vista algo normal. Pero, a través de muchas experiencias que he podido leer gracias a la participación de muchos en el tema, me he dado cuenta que realmente me he quedado corto con semejante concepto. No se trata de un simple disgusto o enfado, no es solo un instante de furia que estalla conscientemente, más bien se trata de algo que sin querer no derramamos ni soltamos, sino que vertemos al lugar equivocado que de a poco va degradando nuestro bienestar emocional.
Trataré de ilustrar el punto. Recuerdo que cuando estaba en la escuela, por un tiempo viví con mi padrino, mi tía y sus hijos. Entre ellos, uno de mis primos practicaba artes marciales, y tenía un saco de pelea guindando en el patio de la casa. En las tardes él solía practicar golpeando el saco, pero había días en los que él llegaba directamente al patio y empezaba a golpear el saco una y otra vez. “¿Por qué haces eso?” Era lo que en mi ignorancia yo le decía, mientras él con el enfado a pleno respondía: “Es que ahorita acabo de discutir con mis amigos y me dio mucha rabia lo que me hicieron”.
I have always been a faithful defender of the idea that "there is no negative feeling or emotion and each one is as valuable as the other", but the truth is that when I come to the subject of resentment I ask myself: Can resentment give something positive to life? Or is it time to refute my idea that for so long I have kept under a good criterion? And there is no doubt that behind every story or experience written with the script of this feeling, it always seems to lead to the same destiny, one marked with pain, suffering and the impotence of not overcoming that which hurts us so much.
Previously I thought of resentment as "resenting something that affects us", and perhaps based on that I saw it from a somewhat normal point of view. But, through many experiences that I have been able to read about thanks to the participation of many on the subject, I have realized that I have really fallen short of such a concept. It is not just a simple annoyance or anger, it is not just a moment of rage that bursts consciously, rather it is something that we unintentionally do not spill or release, but that we pour into the wrong place that little by little degrades our emotional wellbeing.
I will try to illustrate the point. I remember when I was in school, for a while I lived with my godfather, my aunt and her children. Among them, one of my cousins practiced martial arts, and he had a fighting bag hanging in the backyard of the house. In the afternoons he used to practice hitting the bag, but there were days when he would come straight to the yard and start hitting the bag over and over again. "Why do you do that?" Was what in my ignorance I would say to him, while he with full anger would answer, "It's just that right now I just had an argument with my friends and I was very angry about what they did to me."
¿Era resentimiento lo que sentía mi primo? No. Un arranque de ira fue lo que lo motivó a actuar de esa manera. Pero lo que quiero explicar es que, de no haber encontrado la manera de expresar todo lo que sentía por el fallo de sus amigos, ¿Saben a dónde iba a parar toda esa rabia y esa frustración? Pues a su interior, lo cual se habría convertido en un profundo y amargo resentimiento. Claro, con esto no quiero decir que ahora en momentos de ira o molestia vamos a buscar algo para golpear, o vamos a colgar un buen saco en el patio de nuestra casa para desahogarnos sin piedad. Más bien, lo que deseo expresar es una de las razones principales que dan cabida al resentimiento, y no es más que la persistencia del enfado por largo tiempo en nuestro interior.
Espero no enredarme al explicar lo siguiente, y es que el resentimiento tiene razones válidas para surgir, ya que en la mayoría de los casos el daño viene de parte de una persona a quien estimamos y queremos mucho, de quien no esperamos semejante decepción. Entonces, ¿Debemos aceptarlo? Es aquí donde se abre una puerta, y cada uno está en la posición de querer guardar todo ese enfado en nosotros mismos o buscar la manera de librarnos de todo tipo de mal que pueda generarnos el resentimiento. Es nuestra decisión dejar entrar este sentimiento en nuestro corazón, o empujarlo a salir para que no anide en nuestro interior e influya de manera negativa en nuestras acciones y profundos pensamientos.
Existen personas que han llegado a deteriorar su estado de salud por causa de algún resentimiento que por largos años han tenido abrigado con ellos, y esto llega a ser lo más injusto y cruel para alguien que sin culpa y con razón, ha debido experimentar una terrible situación durante muchísimo tiempo. Sufre y padece más el que lo siente que quien lo genera, y al ser algo que nos afecta muy profundamente, nos puede convertir en la clase de personas que no deseamos ser, sumergidos en una frustración y una tristeza que en el caso más duro y extremo nos lleva a cuestionar nuestro valor y lo que podemos aportar como individuos.
Was it resentment that my cousin felt? No. It was an outburst of anger that motivated him to act that way. But what I want to explain is that, had he not found a way to express everything he felt about his friends' failure, do you know where all that anger and frustration would have gone? Well, inside him, which would have turned into a deep and bitter resentment. Of course, by this I do not mean that now in moments of anger or annoyance we are going to look for something to hit, or we are going to hang a good sack in the yard of our house to unburden ourselves mercilessly. Rather, what I wish to express is one of the main reasons that give rise to resentment, and that is nothing more than the persistence of anger for a long time within us.
I hope I am not getting entangled in explaining the following, and that is that resentment has valid reasons to arise, since in most cases the damage comes from a person whom we esteem and love very much, from whom we do not expect such a disappointment. So, should we accept it? It is here where a door opens, and each one of us is in the position of wanting to keep all that anger in ourselves or to look for a way to get rid of all kinds of evil that can generate resentment. It is our decision to let this feeling into our heart, or to push it out so that it does not nest inside us and negatively influence our actions and deep thoughts.
There are people who have deteriorated their health because of some resentment that for many years they have harbored with them, and this becomes the most unfair and cruel for someone who through no fault of their own and with reason, has had to experience a terrible situation for a very long time. The one who feels it suffers more than the one who generates it, and being something that affects us very deeply, it can turn us into the kind of people we do not want to be, submerged in frustration and sadness that in the hardest and most extreme case leads us to question our value and what we can contribute as individuals.
Desde mi experiencia, puedo decir que resentir ha sido “alimentar un triste y difícil pasado que solo sirve para estorbar la luz del mañana”, y vaya que a veces la dificultad no reside en darse cuenta, sino de saber desarraigar aquello que por años ha sido un veneno que no te deja avanzar hacia lo que es bueno en tu vida. Un error muy grande es pensar que con guardar tanto odio y enfado de alguna manera estamos cobrando venganza por quienes nos han fallado, pero la realidad es otra, y es que al hacer esto nos infligimos muchas heridas que nos impiden crecer y progresar, mientras los demás continúan con sus vidas hasta de forma más tranquila y normal que la nuestra.
Después de todo esto, podríamos preguntarnos: ¿Cómo puedo drenar y dejar huir todo aquello que me genera resentimiento? En el caso de los sentimientos no se trata de guindar un saco y desatar toda nuestra ira y desquitarnos con los que nos ofenden o con alguien más. Por el contrario, pienso que todo dependerá de la capacidad y fuerza de voluntad que tengamos para soltar lo más pronto posible toda situación que conduzca al resentimiento, y buscar maneras de drenar todo mediante cualidades y emociones que no nos hagan perder la esencia que como personas deseamos ser. Hagamos espacio para aquello que genere felicidad, gozo y alegría, llenemos nuestra vida de gratas sorpresas y estemos siempre dispuestos a dejar abierta la puerta del perdón. Nadie ha dicho que será fácil, pero cualquier sacrificio bien vale la pena.
Entonces, ¿Se puede sacar algo positivo en cuanto a la existencia de algo como el resentimiento? Realmente creo que no, pero con optimismo pienso que, al saber de la existencia de un sentimiento como el resentimiento, lo mejor es visualizarlo como un gran cartel de advertencia que nos invite a meditar en el enorme daño que redunda en guardar ira, molestia o enfado en nuestro corazón. Por eso, No hay mejor tratamiento que hacer espacio para todo lo que sume en nuestra vida y restar todo aquello que atente contra nuestro bienestar emocional.
From my experience, I can say that resentment has been "feeding a sad and difficult past that only serves to hinder the light of tomorrow", and sometimes the difficulty lies not in realizing it, but in knowing how to uproot that which for years has been a poison that does not let you move towards what is good in your life. A very big mistake is to think that by keeping so much hate and anger we are somehow taking revenge for those who have failed us, but the reality is different, and is that by doing this we inflict many wounds that prevent us from growing and progressing, while others continue with their lives even more calmly and normally than ours.
After all this, we could ask ourselves: How can I drain and let go of everything that generates resentment in me? In the case of feelings, it is not a matter of hanging up a sack and unleashing all our anger and taking it out on those who offend us or on someone else. On the contrary, I think that everything will depend on the capacity and willpower we have to let go as soon as possible of any situation that leads to resentment, and look for ways to drain everything through qualities and emotions that do not make us lose the essence that we want to be as people. Let's make room for what generates happiness, joy and happiness, let's fill our life with pleasant surprises and let's always be willing to leave the door of forgiveness open. No one said it would be easy, but any sacrifice is well worth it.
So, is there anything positive to be gained from the existence of something like resentment? I really think not, but optimistically I think that, knowing about the existence of a feeling like resentment, the best thing to do is to visualize it as a big warning sign that invites us to meditate on the enormous damage that results in keeping anger, annoyance or anger in our heart. Therefore, there is no better treatment than to make room for everything that adds to our life and subtract everything that undermines our emotional well-being.
