Beto and I have been friends since our turbulent teenage years. I met him in the classroom and we made an instant connection by being both of the outcast type, being those characters that don't really fit in with that environment we considered vane and superficial.
Everyday I was thrilled to go to class because of the prospect of hanging out with him because his presence made it all a bit more tolerable, we always shared our worries and I knew I could count on him at my worst moments of teenage angst.
Beto y yo hemos sido amigos desde nuestros turbulentos años de la adolescencia. Lo conocí en el salón de clases e hicimos una conexión inmediata al ser ambos aquellos personajes que no encajaban del todo en aquel ambiente que considerabamos vano y superficial.
Cada día me alentaba ir a clases el prospecto de verlo pues su presencia lo hacía todo un poco más tolerable, siempre compartimos inquietudes y sabía que podía contar con el en mis momentos de mayor angustia juvenil.
That's why my world crumbled when he decided to leave the country nine years ago, more than a friend I always felt as if he was an extension of my own self and it was a lesson about attachment I will never forget. On one side I was excited and happy for his new adventure because it meant a better future for him, but the pain in my soul was unbearable.
With time I got used to that new dynamic but deep inside I was fearing that with time we would grow apart... Nothing more far from reality, because even with the fact we could not speak as often, I have always counted on him even if he's not here physically.
Es por eso que cuando hace nueve años el decidió irse del país sentí mi mundo derrumbarse, más que amigo lo sentía como una extensión de mi misma y fue una lección sobre el apego que jamás olvidaré. Por una parte estaba emocionada y feliz de que se adentrara en una nueva aventura que para el supondría un enorme progreso, pero el dolor en mi alma era realmente insoportable.
Con el paso del tiempo me fui acostumbrando a esa nueva dinámica pero dentro de mi estaba ese temor a que con el tiempo perdieramos en contacto... Nada más alejado a la realidad, pues si bien no podíamos hablar como antes, siempre he contado con el aunque no esté cerca físicamente.
By the end of November he gave me the news he was coming to the country to visit his family, and that we would see each other after so long. Everything seemed so unreal that I kinda didn't pay too much attention. But the day came and we finally got to reunite after all this time, we got to hang out a couple of times and it was as if the time never passed (despite all the physical changes).
It was very refreshing to see someone so dear to me and that has had such a big impact in my life. I am proud to see the person he's become and to say that after all we are still best friends.
A finales de noviembre me dió la noticia de que estaría viniendo al país a visitar a su familia, y que nos veríamos después de tanto tiempo. Todo me parecía tan irreal que no le había dado mucha importancia. Pero llegó la fecha y finalmente nos reunimos después de tanto tiempo, salimos un par de veces y era como si el tiempo no hubiese pasado (pese a los obvios cambios físicos).
Fue realmente refrescante poder ver a una persona tan querida para mí y que ha tenido un impacto tan grande en mi vida. Me enorgullece mucho ver la person en que se ha convertido y poder decir que a pesar de tantas cosas seguimos siendo mejores amigos.
But it was a brief stay, and as day passed, the day of his departure came. I was emotionally beaten because a few days earlier my sister left the country, and soon one of my closer friends is leaving too... So everything adds up and it's causing me severe anxiety. It's never easy to say goodbye, and having so many simultaneous goodbyes is really overwhelming.
There's no uncertainty nonetheless, we have grown and matured and there's the certainty that we are going to be friends no matter time or distance. With all the changes there's still things that remain the same, and one of those is the love we have for each other. We both have a life and a path ahead of us, so I just hope we get to hang out in the future.
Pero su estadía fue breve, y con el paso de los días se acercó la fecha de su partida. Sentimentalmente estaba destrozada pues días antes mi hermana se fue del país, y próximamente se irá una de mis amigas más cercanas... Así que la mezcla de todo me causaba una ansiedad tremenda. Las despedidas nunca son fáciles, y tener varias despedidas simultáneas puede ser realmente sobrecogedor.
Sin embargo en esta oportunidad no existe tanta incertidumbre, hemos crecido y madurado y existe la certeza de que siempre seremos amigos sin importar el tiempo y la distancia. Aún con los cambios hay cosas que permanecen igual, y una de esas cosas es el gran cariño que existe entre ambos. Cada uno tiene una vida y un camino por delante, así que solo espero que nuevamente nos volvamos a encontrar en un futuro.
There's nothing left for me to do but hoping for the best and to wait life gets us together again, that I will always be there for him offering my most sincere friendship.
