We should know that due to the presence of the body there is physical disease, therefore due to the presence of the mind there will be mental disease.
Depression is a mental illness. It is normal for people to suffer from depression. Any untoward incident upsets us. This is very normal. But when the level or duration of this upset becomes more than normal, it is called depression.
One in three will experience a major depressive episode at some point in their lives, and one in ten will suffer from moderate or severe depression. More than 50 percent of people who die by suicide suffer from major depression.
Depression has several causes and risk factors. Depression may increase or develop for these. The most commonly used classification clinically is:
- Endogenous depression
- Reactive/Exogenous depression.
Depression that does not seem to have any cause is called endogenous or biological depression. And the depression behind which a specific event or problem is found, that is Reactive depression.
But we also need to understand that what appears to be depression may actually be just the outward symptoms of a more complex disease.Depression can be temporary or chronic. You must consult a doctor for chronic depression. However, it is not always possible to get rid of depression through treatment. Therefore, it is more effective to find out the reasons behind it, to prevent the reasons in advance.
There are also some personal causes of depression such as –
Loneliness, lack of social support or contact, recent traumatic event, family history of depression, marital or relationship conflict, financial problems, past traumatic childhood, presence of alcohol or drug addiction, unemployment, complex physical disorders, etc.
There is really no formal treatment for depression. Depression is basically a mental disorder. So you have to deal with it through your mind mentality. Trying to improve our mental state is the only way out of our depression.
