Rough time for these past few days that I need to acquire a new phone after breaking my Samsung Note 8 from water damage and bursting the motherboard. This is not the best time for me to buy a new phone as I am struggling financially. I tried to repair my Samsung by myself, unfortunately, it ended up not so good as it turns out that I totally damage it by dipping it on alcohol liquid for 30 minutes, after that I totally no longer have a phone, how lucky.
My post of losing my Samsung Note 8
This post is not about my old Samsung Note 8 but my personal review of my new phone called Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G based on my new experience for the past 7 days. I want to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of using this phone as far as I concerned, maybe the thing I considered a disadvantage for me is not such a big deal for you but I am writing here based on what I went through these recent days.
This is the thing which I appreciate which I am not used to in my old phones, maybe it exists in my former phones that I am not aware of.
What are the Advantages?
1/ One thing that the latest Huawei phone does not have is access to Google Play services which will force you to be geekier or nerd that you will force to think to use third-party app provider services. Huawei has its own Application store which is called AppGallery, the first time I only heard that Amazon AppStore exists because of this situation push me on this situation.
I started using AppGallery, Aptoide, APKPure, AppFinder, Aurora Store, Petal Search, and Amazon Appstore. This is one of the advantages I guess that it will extend you to be mindful of many app stores, not only focus on Google store and Apple store.
2/ The super-fast charging capability. It also has the heavy-duty fast charger included in the box, I admit it makes me happy when I open the box and see the quality of the charger and the cord which is very high quality. I thought that Samsung has a fast charger, but after having this phone, I believe this is by far better fast charger.
The smartphone is fueled by a Non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery + Fast charging 40W, 75% in 30 min (advertised) + Reverse charging 5W.
3/ Compared to my Samsung Note 8, it was faster than my old phone. Well, I guess we cannot fully compare it that way because Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was released last August 23, 2017, while Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G was released only April 23, 2020, which is a 3-year difference.
4/ 5G connectivity. I heard some controversy against 5G but maybe we can talk about it later, but for now, I think this is one of the cheapest you can get that has 5G connectivity ready, I may say this is a future proof phone to be able to use 5G whenever the network is possible in your place.
5/ We have a not so expensive phone here. The price is only ranging $350 - $400 compared to my original prospect phone Samsung Note 20 Ultra - $1,300.
The full specs are listed here
6/ About the camera. I appreciate the Camera especially the Full Wide Angle as I can see myself using that camera feature, it is also good to have the 10x zoom.
7/ eBook mode. One of the things I like is turning the phone black and white, I used it often especially at night when the light is off.
8/ Huawei has a built-in auto power saving mode which is very efficient for saving the battery juices
What are the Disadvantages?
1/ It has no Google Services. That includes no Google Playstore, no Youtube app, no Google Drive, no Google Sheets. These are the one that I noticed because these apps are my concern when changing my phone that I have no access to anymore. However, there are some tweaks like Youtube as I am watching on my Brave browser which is also good because it has no advertisements, there are also apps like SnapTube and Youtube Vanched. Alternatives for Google apps.
Regarding the Google Sheets and Google drive, there is also Microsoft OneDrive for this problem. Regarding Google play store, Huawei has its own AppGallery which is still lacking in some apps but I may say that most popular apps are already there. Fortunately, I manage to have the Google Chrome browser and Google Maps fully working.
2/ Notification problem. I found it annoying not to receive any notification on my Twitter and Discord, I already made a ton of research on how to solve these issues but none of it works for me. In the meantime, I am using the e-mail push notification for my activity on Twitter. However, this is not possible on Discord as I need to open the Discord app first before I will know that I have a new message or tags. Hope it can solve in the near future, aside from these two apps it seems I have no problem with my other apps regarding the notification.
3/ You need to be a more techy person before using this phone. Some of the apps might not be available for download on AppGallery, so you need to use a third-party app downloader like Apptoide or Amazon AppStore
Conclusion
As of writing this blog (Oct 23, 2020), I only had this phone for only a week so I am not sure if I can see more problems or maybe find an easier solution for all my concerns. I remember my experience when I first bought my Macbook pro back in 2012, most of the app that I need are only available for Windows PC. Today is a way different pictures because of much available applications on Mac OS. What are your thoughts guys, will you consider trying Huawei? Leave a comment below...
