After finding 2 murals done by the streetart collective "De Strakke Hand" in Arnhem in commission for the Arnhem Museum in celebration of there 100th anniversary i decided to have a look at these paintings in their real form.

Located at the Utrechtseweg 87 in Arnhem is this museum which has a collection ranging from (inter) national painting from the 1500's until the early 1900's, as well as a large collection of modern art, from paintings to statues in the Museums garden.

Outside of the museum
Being build in 1873, there are still some old architectural features found on the outside. The museum has had a mayor renovation and extension which started in 2017, and came to an end in May 2022, adding 82,000 sq feet of space, and costed a whopping 23 million euro's.

Modern Art
Once inside, they split up the museum in 2 sides, the left for modern art collection, and the right for their painting collection.
Modern art isn't my cup of tea, but there are pieces, when you know the idea behind it can get my interest. But there are also artworks where i think, what drugs did you take? And what where the people who exhibition it thinking? Here an impression:

Artwork: The Tourist (1990) by Margriet van Breevoort

Small exposition of painter Dick Ket.

One of the last Self portraits done by Dick Ket. In this piece you can see how his insomnia and failing body impacted his vision of the world around him.

Idiots (2016) by Stereo
Classic Art
Luckily for my they have a large collection of traditional art which i like more. It's great to stand in front a painting to see how the artist put his / her strokes on the canvas, how they implement lighting or just to spot all of the small details they have put in.

Portrait de ma femme By Ge Roling
The "Portrait de ma femme" is one of my favorites. The detail and beauty of the lady is just astonishing in real life. And what also amazes me, is the how "simple" the horses are drawn.

In one of my streetart posts of Arnhem, the Self Portrait of Henk Mual is pictured on the side of a building. Well, this is the real painting on which the mural is based.

And just outside the museum is another mural done by the Strakke Hand based on this painting done by Carel Willink:

The Garden
On the outside there is a garden surrounding the museum which is filled with pieces of modern art. Some are fun to look at, others just don't make any sense, no matter how you look at them.

This is one example of WTF. Let me know in the comments what "art" you see here 😉
If you got this far, thanks for taking your time to check out my post. I regularly post about StreetArt across the Netherlands, so like and follow to get updated about them.
