¡Buenas tardes! Saludos a esta hermosa comunidad Natural Medicine. Hoy les traigo la tercera parte del seriado relacionado con
es decir, las que tienen ponzoña o aguijón, y las cuales no son nativas de América del Sur, pero ya llevan siglos acá y se han adaptado a nuestros ecosistemas. A continuación, pueden ver las dos primeras partes del seriado, en donde hablo de dos variedades de abejas meliponas (sin aguijón), y otra publicación que hice sobre el inicio de una colmena de abejas aricas o angelitas dentro de mi casa:
Como ya saben, dispongo de un trozo de bosque en la parte trasera de mi casa, es mi solar. Allí pues, hay un miniecosistema muy rico; y una de las especies que hacen posible la existencia de este espacio, gracias a su labor como polinizadora, son las abejas. Actualmente dispongo, además de las meliponas, avispitas y abejorros, de cuatro especies de abejas Apis en este espacio, aunque sus colmenas están ubicadas en la parte alta de los árboles, por lo que no tengo acceso a ellas y tampoco deseo cosechar su miel, mi intención es desarrollar un meliponario. He podido observar abejas verdes, que anidan en el suelo, tal cual hormigas; abejas grandes, el doble del tamaño de las normales, que también anidan en el suelo; abejas Apis comunes, que son de color marrón y dorado; y otra variedad más pequeña, que tiene unas hermosas listas amarillas, (no son abejorros). Seguidamente vamos a ver los hábitos y particularidades de estas dos últimas.
Las abejas Apis mellifera, según la Misión de Guadalupe (2016) se definen como:
“Las abejas son insectos, pertenecientes al género apis y especie mellifera. Viven en grandes sociedades llamadas colonias, perfectamente organizadas, donde cada individuo realiza una función determinada de acuerdo a su edad y desarrollo físico. En la apicultura moderna, la colonia es introducida en una caja construida por el hombre llamada colmena, ello permite criar las abejas de manera racional para nuestro beneficio económico.” (p. 7)
Esta definición se refiere a la abeja común africana, por tanto, son insectos que en América se consideran una exoespecie (especie foránea al hábitat que ocupa), pero que ha ido adaptándose a los diversos ecosistemas.
Las abejas Apis son más grandes que las abejita meliponas. Son de tonos marrones y dorados, con franjas negras alternadas con otras marrones o amarillas. Al igual que el resto de las abejas y abejorros, son muy selectivas con su alimentación, y en mi solar liban específicamente las flores de la guayaba (Psidium guajava), se deleitan con las de toronjil (Melissa officinalis); semeruco o cerecitas rojas (Malpighia emarginata), y otra planta común cuyo nombre científico e incluso común desconozco, pero de la que tengo un ejemplar y a las Apis y meliponas les encantan libar sus flores y la tribu morrocoy adoran sus hojas. También son muy laboriosas, especialmente las Apis comunes, ya que están libando a toda hora, incluso debajo del sol inclemente del mediodía, excepto en horas nocturnas, cuando descansan. La especie más pequeña generalmente liba cuando el sol no es muy fuerte, es decir, horas tempranas de la mañana y al final de la tarde, o se dirigen a plantas que tengan resguardo bajo la sombra. Me parece divertido ver a las abejas dar vueltas dentro de las flores de guayaba, es un deleite total para ellas darse un chapuzón dentro de los pistilos de estas flores y girar, girar y girar sobre sí mismas, al parecer lo disfrutan muchísimo. Cabe señalar que el mecanismo de defensa de estas abejas es su ponzoña, aunque yo he interactuado múltiples veces con ellas y jamás me han picado, obviamente, trato de no perturbarlas.
Es necesario que todos, nuevas y viejas generaciones, recordemos que es muy importante respetar, conocer, conservar y multiplicar a las abejas en general, pues constituyen una piedra angular de la vida en el planeta. Bees in my backyard (Part III)
Good afternoon! Greetings to this beautiful Natural Medicine community. Today I bring you the third part of the series related to
THE BEES and this will deal with the bees that we generally know
APIS BEES, that is, those that have a poison or stinger, and the which are not native to South America, but they have been here for centuries and have adapted to our ecosystems. Below, you can see the first two parts of the series, where I talk about two varieties of melipona bees (without a sting), and another publication I made about the beginning of a hive of Arica or Angel bees inside my house:
As you know, I have a piece of forest at the back of my house, it is my lot. There, then, there is a very rich mini-ecosystem; and one of the species that make the existence of this space possible, thanks to its work as a pollinator, are bees. Currently I have, in addition to the meliponas, wasps and bumblebees, four species of Apis bees in this space, although their hives are located in the upper part of the trees, so I do not have access to them and I do not want to harvest their honey, my intention is to develop a meliponario. I have been able to observe green bees, which nest on the ground, just like ants; large bees, twice the size of normal ones, which also nest on the ground; common Apis bees, which are brown and gold in color; and another smaller variety, which has beautiful yellow stripes, (they are not bumblebees). Next we are going to see the habits and peculiarities of these last two.
The bees Apis mellifera, according to the Mission of Guadalupe (2016) are defined as:
“Bees are insects, belonging to the genus apis and the mellifera species. They live in large societies called colonies, perfectly organized, where each individual performs a certain function according to their age and physical development. In modern beekeeping, the colony is introduced into a man-made box called a hive, which allows the bees to be raised in a rational way for our economic benefit.” (p. 7)
This definition refers to the common African bee, therefore, they are insects that in America are considered an exospecies (a species foreign to the habitat it occupies), but that has been adapting to the various ecosystems.
Apis bees are larger than melipon bees. They are of brown and gold tones, with black stripes alternated with other brown or yellow ones. Like the rest of the bees and bumblebees, they are very selective with their diet, and in my solar they specifically suck the flowers of the guava (Psidium guajava), they delight with those of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis); semeruco or red cherries (Malpighia emarginata), and another common plant whose scientific and even common name I do not know, but of which I have a copy and the Apis and Meliponas love to suck their flowers and the Morrocoy tribe adore their leaves. They are also very laborious, especially the common Apis, since they are sucking at all hours, even under the inclement sun of noon, except at night hours, when they rest. The smallest species generally forage when the sun is not very strong, that is, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, or they go to plants that have shelter under the shade. I find it fun to see the bees spinning inside the guava flowers, it is a total delight for them to take a dip inside the pistils of these flowers and turn, turn and turn on themselves, apparently they enjoy it very much. It should be noted that the defense mechanism of these bees is their poison, although I have interacted with them multiple times and they have never stung me, obviously, I try not to disturb them.
It is necessary for all of us, new and old generations, to remember that it is very important to respect, know, conserve and multiply bees in general, as they constitute a cornerstone of life on the planet.
