A few weeks ago, I finally made it to try a Migao in Bogota. Since I arrived in Colombia in October, I had been wanting to try it. There’s a place called Migaito a couple of blocks away from the apartment we are staying. I had always seen so many people at the place that I was intrigued.
I had read that Migao is a chocolate-based (or it can also be made with panela water) that’s topped with crumbs and cheese. Apparently, it’s traditional from the Antioquia region in Colombia.
So, during the first week of January, my son and I visited Migaito one afternoon. Despite it was crowded, we were able to place our order and find a seat. My son opted for a large Migao, which was quite generous. However, we both found it to be excessively large. His Migao included almojabana, achiras, ducal crackers, and momposino cheese.
The unique concept of Migaito is that you can customize your Migao according to your preferences.
By the way, for those unfamiliar with them, almojabanas are traditional Colombian bread rolls, and achiras are cookies shaped like sticks made from achira flour, a common plant in the region.
I ordered my Migao small and without almojabana. I was a bit sceptical about liking it. I recall when I was young that whenever we visited one of my paternal uncles who lived in a rural area with cold nights, we would have coffee with milk or chocolate accompanied by bread with butter and grated cheese in the evenings. Everyone except me would dip the bread in the coffee with milk or chocolate. So, I wasn’t sure if I would like the Migaito.
To my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I felt I had made a mistake choosing the toppings and it lacked crumbs. I particularly liked the contrast of the cheese with the chocolate, but I also thought at that time I could have added more cheese.
That day, my husband was working and couldn’t join us. However, a couple of days ago, I returned to Migaito.
I managed to satisfy my craving, and my husband was finally able to try it after all we told him about it.
On this second visit, the place was less crowded, so we didn’t have to wait for a table.
We ordered a small Migaito for each of us, which was more than enough to satisfy our apetite for the rest of the evening. We chose milk chocolate and added almojabana, achiras, and ducales cookies for the migas. For the cheese, we opted for momposino and queso campesino.
The Migaito was incredibly loaded and delicious.
The chocolate was quite liquid. I’m accustomed to thick chocolate, but in this case, since it’s meant to be filled with crumbs, the liquid consistency is perfect. The combination of the liquid chocolate, the salty contrast of the cheese and crackers, and the overall texture makes it not cloying at all. It’s an ideal choice for a late afternoon “tardear,” as they say here, on a chilly Bogotan afternoon.

Hace unas semanas por fin fui a probar un Migao en Bogotá. Desde que vine a Colombia en el mes de octubre lo tenía pendiente, pues muy cerca del apartamento donde nos alojamos hay un sitio que se llama Migaito. Siempre veía mucha gente en el local, así que me daba mucha curiosidad.
Ya había leído que el Migao es un chocolate (o también se puede hacer con agua de panela) al que se le añaden migas y queso. Leí también que es típico de la región de Antioquia en Colombia.
Así que la primera semana de Enero mi hijo y yo fuimos una tarde a Migaito. El sitio estaba abarrotado de gente pero logramos pedir y sentarnos. Mi hijo pidió un Migao grande. Bastante generoso y que a ambos nos pareció grandísimo. El de él tenía, almojabana, achiras, galletas ducales y queso tipo momposino.
En el concepto del lugar es que tú puedes armar tu migaito a tu gusto.
Por cierto para quienes no las conocen, las almojabanas son unos bollos de pan típicos colombianos y las achiras son unas galletas en forma de palitos que se hacen con harina de achiras, una planta típica de la región.
Yo pedí mi Migao pequeño y sin almojabana. Estaba un poco escéptica de si me gustaría. Recuerdo cuando era pequeña que siempre que visitábamos a uno de mis tíos paternos que vivía en una zona rural en la que bajaba la temperatura en la noche, nos gustaba tomar café con leche o chocolate acompañado de pan con mantequilla y queso rallado y a todos les gustaba mojar el pan en el café con leche o el chocolate menos a mi. Así que no sabía como me iría con el Migaito.
Para mi sorpresa me gustó mucho. Pero sentí que me había equivocado en armarlo y me faltó miga. Me gustó mucho el contraste del queso con el chocolate pero también sentí que habría podido ponerle mas queso.
Ese día mi esposo estaba trabajando y no pudo ir con nosotros, pero hace un par de días volví a Migaito. Y así yo maté el antojo y mi esposo pudo probarlo después de todo lo que le habíamos contado.
En esta segunda visita el lugar estaba menos concurrido. Así que no tuvimos que esperar por mesa para sentarnos.
Ambos pedimos nuestro Migaito pequeño, un tamaño mas que adecuado, con chocolate con leche y los siguientes toppings, de migas pedimos almojabana, achiras y galletas ducales y de queso, pedimos tipo momposino y queso campesino. El Migaito nos quedó super cargado pero delicioso.
El chocolate es bastante líquido. Yo estoy acostumbrada a que el chocolate debe ser espeso pero en este caso que es para llenarlo de migas, me parece perfecto que sea más liquido. Eso aunado al contraste salado del queso y las galletas hace que no sea empalagoso en absoluto. Perfecto para tardear, como dicen aquí, en una fría tarde Bogotana.
