Bread has always been my go-to when I don’t feel like cooking. Even though I’m not a huge fan of bread, I enjoy pairing it with a variety of foods, like butter, milk, chocolate drinks, stews, fried or scrambled eggs, jam, bean cake, and beans.
However, since moving to this village, I’ve found it hard to enjoy bread because most of the options here are bland unless they’re very fresh. Eventually, I got bored of plain bread and decided to switch up its taste and appearance. That’s how I discovered French toast!
Without a toaster, I improvised and manually crafted mine, which turned out to be a fun experiment.
French toast, as I’ve come to understand, is essentially bread soaked in a mixture of milk and eggs, then fried. Its origins are associated with French culinary traditions, but it’s widely enjoyed and adapted in other countries like the United States, Hong Kong, and India.
Now, let me share my recipe with you. This bread came from the city (not my village), so it had better flavor to start with!
Ingredients for My French Toast Recipe
• White bread: 4 slices
• Egg: 1 large
• Butter: for frying
• Evaporated milk
• Sugar: 2 cubes
• Cooking oil
• Bama (mayonnaise): 1 sachet

Nonstick pan, bowl, knife, and whisk
My Step-by-Step Recipe
Prepare the Mixture
Break the egg into a bowl.
Add two cubes of sugar and the evaporated milk.
Whisk everything together until smooth and well-combined.
Soak the Bread
Separate four slices of bread from the pack.
Dip one slice into the mixture, ensuring it’s well-coated. Place it on top of another soaked slice to make a “2-in-1” sandwich.
Soak lightly for firmer toast or thoroughly for softer, sweeter toast( this is optional ).
Fry the Bread
Heat a nonstick pan on a gas cooker. Ensure the pan is completely dry before adding butter.
Melt a small amount of butter and add a few drops of cooking oil to prevent burning.
Place the soaked “2-in-1” bread into the pan.
Cook to desired State
Fry one side until golden brown, then flip and fry the other side.
To ensure the eggs cook through, press the bread gently with a spoon while frying.( I do this because I love my eggs deeply cooked ).
Assemble the Sandwich
Once the bread is golden and crisp, remove it from the pan.
Spread a sachet of Bama on the first batch, then stack the second batch on top to create a sandwich.
This dish is simple yet satisfying and it is a creative way to revive plain bread. It’s soft, flavorful, and can be customized to your liking. You can even add more fillings to your sandwich for example, beef, sausages, fruits, lettuce and other vegetables. Whether you pair it with tea or enjoy it as is, French toast is a treat worth trying. I’ve tried it more than thrice in this village and I don’t complain about the village bread anymore.
