With State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and President U Win Myint, under arrest since the overthrow of the civilian government in Feb 2021, a leadership in exile known as the 'NUG' (National Unity Government) has formed in its place. After ruthless attacks against pro-democracy protests, including the killings of children, the people formed 'PDFs' (People's Defense Force) in order to defend themselves.

These groups have formed up with the ethnic armies in order to fight the dictatorship of the military Junta that illegally seized power, in order to return democracy to Burma. The military has responded by launching airstrikes on unarmed villages, while entering and burning down thousands of homes and shooting anyone in sight. Entire populations have had to flee to the jungle where they face even more airstrikes.

Unlike Ukraine, The resistance has received no foreign aid

Like Ukraine, these bespoke self-protection units, face a well-armed military known as the Tatmadaw, and are seriously outgunned in their battles against them. The civilian government in exile and the people have requested arms, funding and intervention by the UN and the west, and have been answered with a smattering of targeted sanctions. The comparison to the swift action taken with Ukraine is astounding. Seeing no support from national governments, the rebels have taken to accepting donations in cryptocurrency.

If Burma had received even a tenth of the weapons and financial support that Ukraine has, the people would have won their freedom by now. Even outgunned and outmanned, the PDFs have won numerous battles against the Tatmadaw in clashes outside of the major cities. Fighting with old-fashioned muskets and whatever weapons they could capture from the enemy, they have made a brave and principled stand in favor of freedom.

However, they are powerless against the air attacks committed by the military Junta, and have been met with silence when requesting support from the rest of the world. They understand that Ukraine is in Europe and will receive the lions share of help and support, but are puzzled that no one has answered their repeated requests for assistance. Its galling to see Zelensky taking in over 10 billion dollars of military hardware and economic assistance, while castigating the west for not doing even more for his country, while the people of Burma face their mighty military, alone.

Typically, Junta troops will enter a village seeking PDF fighters. When they can't find them, they will arrest innocent family members, even children as young as 4-years-old have been jailed and killed. Those that were unable to flee, are shot, stabbed to death, and burned alive after being drenched in fuel. People are used as human shields by the military, then executed when no longer needed.

This is a story you're not hearing about on the news, which is why I've been tweeting about it since the coup began in early 2021. So when I see Zelensky complaining about the aid he has received, I say "just be glad your country isn't Burma." I'm not necessarily in favor of the US intervening in every local conflict, but if ever there was a 'just cause' to support, its the fight for freedom by the people of Burma. This would also have the benefit of peeling that country away from the corrosive influence of our adversary China.

While everyone is focused on Putin and Russia, China is not-so-quietly, preparing for conflict with America. Taiwan, the Spratly Islands, and the South China Sea, will be the setting for war between these two powers. We have a chance to keep the beacon of democracy shining in the country of Burma. Freedom cannot wait, and like Ukraine, the brave people of Burma who are fighting for their lives, deserve our help.
