An interesting topic this week and one that connects with several very important issues such as racism as well as many kinds of conflict. Judgement is very different to stating something you see, or an observation.. and i believe that most people are not aware of the critical difference. This leads to conflicts in many ways because something that someone says as an observation can be reinterpreted as a judgement when in fact there was no judgement at all.

Let me illustrate this with a simple example. When we speak about people from Africa we often refer to them as black. That is OK, we know that, it is an observation. Now, if we use a similar example you can see how the lines start to get blurred. If someone says that black people are involved in more crime alarm bells start ringing do they not? If i said this in public i would easily be called a racist. But what if I was merely quoting statistics? Perhaps it is true, and perhaps also there are very good reasons for it being so. What makes something racist is when we start to say that ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER due to these differences. It is only when we say this that we enter the realm of judgement.

So, this week we seek to clarify a most critical aspect of our language and understanding that has ramifications so deep that today cities in the USA are being torn apart by it. This question also runs deep in our personal relationships and connections with others. Once we understand the difference between someone making an observation or standing in judgement we can avoid the trap of becoming a judge of others, and often quite incorrectly. Just last week I lost a friend because of something i said. I am staying in an apartment right now and had a new family moving into the apartment below. I could hear them talk and move as though they are in the same apartment as me! I told my friend that I was not happy about it and didn't feel comfortable being so close to them because im always nervous to disturb them early in the morning, and vice versa. I guess the timing was bad, and somehow she interpreted this a judgement on them, and the many people who live side by side quite happily. It was hard for me to understand how she had transposed my comment into this, but she did, and she was quite angry about it and spent quite some time harassing me about it. After that things were never the same, i had hit a sore nerve of hers and due to this misunderstanding our friendship just ended.

I'm sure we could all come up with many examples of times when this may have happened to you. Perhaps you have judged someone due to a misunderstanding, or maybe you have been judged quite wrongly! This week i invite you all to share what comes up for you when you read this question. What is judgement to you and what is racism? Do we / Should we share a common definition of these terms, and do you think we generally understand what the difference is between Judgement and Observation.
