🗞 Bitcoin Spikes to New Record High Over $60K

After a period of drops and consolidation since Mid-February, Bitcoin has found its mojo again and soared to new all-time highs.

In a sudden move starting just after 10:00 UTC Saturday, the top cryptocurrency by market cap rose to $60,065.15, according to the CoinDesk 20.

"Bitcoin is testing the sound barrier at $60k, and institutional investment continues to build momentum with Chinese internet firm Meitu the latest to execute a Bitcoin treasury strategy, " according to Jehan Chu, co-founder and managing partner of Kenetic, a Hong Kong-based trading firm.

"Further, Beeple's $69 milllion NFT record demonstrates the true power of crypto, adding curiosity and fuel to the retail fire. Expect volatility but a landing of $100k levels by Q3," he said.

Should Coinbase host Dogecoin?

“Yes!” says Elon Musk.

The crypto world is waiting.

Today the Twitterverse spewed out a question that caught the eye of Tesla CEO, crypto bull and Coinbase user Elon Musk: “Do you think Coinbase should enable Dogecoin on their platform?” Musk replied with an exclamatory “Yes!”

Musk’s no stranger to crypto. In early February, a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing disclosed that Tesla had bought $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. Before that, Elon had frequently been pumping memecoin DOGE to the point where a single Dogecoin meme tweet caused a surge of almost 40% in the currency’s price in just half an hour.

🗞 FTX in Talks to Sponsor Miami Heat’s NBA Stadium: Report

Crypto exchange FTX is in talks with Miami-Dade County in Florida to sponsor the basketball arena that houses the Miami Heat, a professional basketball team, according to the Miami Herald.

The Herald reported Friday that FTX is “getting closer” to signing a deal with Miami-Dade County, which owns the stadium and is legally responsible for naming rights. According to the news outlet, an unidentified party registered ftxarena.com, as well as similar social media handles. American Airlines is the current name sponsor for the arena.

Should the deal go through, FTX would become the first crypto exchange to sponsor a major professional sports venue in the U.S.

The talks are another sign that crypto is breaking into the mainstream in 2021 amid~~Strikethrough~~ new price highs, institutional and corporate investment and the growing use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the art world.

🗞 CZ responds to reports of Binance investigation: story has no "teeth"

Shortly after a Bloomberg report on Friday that cryptocurrency exchange Binance was under investigation for permitting US residents to place unlawful trades, Binance founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao (better known as CZ) dismissed the reports during a live AMA on Clubhouse, saying that the report had “no teeth.”

“This is a topic that just came up, literally like a few minutes ago or a hour ago,” said CZ. “So number one, the news article said there was no, I don’t have it in front of me, there was no “misconduct,” I have to dig it up. So number one there was no report of misconduct from Binance, so the report kind of defeated itself.”

CZ noted that as a business Binance maintains a “no comment” policy on communications with regulators, which places the company in a difficult position with regards to rebutting the contents of the report, which cited a single anonymous source.

Cracks in the geofence

The reports that the CFTC is investigating whether or not US users placed illegal trades on the exchange perhaps shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that as recently as November last year he admitted that US traders find “intelligent” ways to circumvent the ban.
