The D-day is here. Remember Miracle's Prom dress. I finally put beautiful finishing touches to the dress, and yes, she looked stunning in her dress. Can I say she blue us away. After making the tube dress, I was a bit on a creative block on how to finish her dress, which I know arose from wanting to make her dress look unique.
After much contemplation, I finally decided to add a draped sleeve to the dress and also created matching, beautiful fingerless gloves to complete that prom queen look. I also scattered the same colored flowers on the open slit area and the gloves. This decision was made at the last minute, as I had already packed her dress, ready to be delivered, when that idea popped in my mind, and as expected, she made head sway at her graduation, feeling beautiful, happy, and confident in her dress, the right emotions we all need on our day of celebration.
I can still remember her chatting me up at almost midnight a few days before her graduation, feeling worried that she might miss out on her graduation day because she didn't have any dress in the royal blue colour her school had selected for them, and considering the high cost of buying a ready-made dress in the market which is quite expensive.
What I admire about her was how she was considerate of her mum's financial wellbeing, not wanting to overburden her, the reason she had reached out to me for a solution, and I was more than happy to be of help, seeing her looking stunning in her prom dress on her graduation day filled my heart with joy, knowing that i'm in my corner providing a solution to my society in my own little way.
So without further ado, today's tutorial will be about how to create a draped sleeve. Using the method I will be providing, you can attach this sleeve to an off-the-shoulder or tube blouse or gown just like the one I made using any fabric of your choice.
For this dress, I made use of the same blue crepe fabric as the dress
Cutting And Sewing Process
- First, I cut out a rectangular fabric on fold, the width measures 22 inches, while the folded length is 13 inches
- Next, I sewed the open edge, then turned it to the good side of the fabric, placing the sewn part at the center
- Using the measurement deducted from the tube gown front and back, I added them together and cut out the sleeve's upper side, and added an extra two inches to cut the base of the sleeve, opening it up, which gives this trapezium shape
- Continuing, I interlocked both rough edges with my weaving machine, then ran a gathered stitch on both ends.
- Pulling the thread to gather both ends, here is how the sleeves look now
- I sewed both ends of the gathered area to the front and back of the armhole area of the dress, and that completes the making process of these beautiful draped sleeves.
