Hola HIVE espero que todos se encuentren muy bien haciendo cosas muy creativas y creciendo en el proceso.
A few months ago, for an arts college assignment, I created a small
sculpture, for a hypothetical project I proposed for that subject; that same small sculpture became my first piece that I
exhibited in a museum, thanks to the fact that the professor organized a collective student exhibition and included me in it. But I liked that proposal very much and wanted to make it a reality on a larger scale, so I took advantage of the fact that there was an active call for entries for the 67th Arturo Michelena Salon, which is being held in the state of Carabobo, and used it as motivation to create that piece.
Hace unos meses atrás para una asignación de la universidad de artes, cree una pequeña
escultura, para un proyecto hipotético que propuse para esa materia; esa misma pequeña escultura se convirtió en mi primera pieza que
expongo en un museo gracias a que la profesora organizo una exposición colectiva de estudiantes y me incluyo en esa muestra. Pero esa propuesta me gustó muchísimo y quise hacerla realidad a una mayor escala, entonces aproveche que estaba activa una convocatoria para el 67° salón Arturo Michelena que se lleva a cabo en el estado Carabobo, y lo use como motivación para crear esa pieza.
When I finally decided to participate in that call, I only had a week left to make the piece, so I got to work. As I always like to recycle and reuse materials in all my creations and this was no exception, I used a sheet of galvanized steel that I had stored since I vacated a premises (I have two commercial premises) that I had to rent and remodeled, and all the things I took from there that could be useful for something in the future, I stored them in my house. One of those things was a marble countertop with which I made my current
desk and this sheet of galvanized steel (actually there are several) that I am going to use to create this work of art.
Cuando por fin me decidí a participar en esa convocatoria solo me quedaba una semana para realizar la pieza, así que puse manos a la obra; como siempre me gusta reciclar y reutilizar material en todas mis creaciones y esta no fue la excepción, use una lámina de acero galvanizado que tenía guardada desde que desocupe un local (tengo dos locales comerciales) que tenía que alquilar y lo remodele, y todas las cosas que saque de allí que me podían servir para algo a futuro, las guarde en mi casa. Una de esas cosas fue un mesón de mármol con el que me hice mi actual
escritorio y esta lamina de acero galvanizado (en realidad son varias) que voy a utilizar para crear esta obra de arte.
First I cut the sheet to the exact size I needed it to be and then divided it into several parts. I decided on the length to be 2 meters. As the piece is going to be a sculptural assemblage, I wanted it to be quite large, since on previous occasions I participated in the Arturo Michelena exhibition and was not selected because my pieces were very small, and it is better for the judges to select larger pieces. That is why this year I was determined to create a large piece.
Primero corte la lámina a la medida justa que necesitaba que estuviera para luego dividirla en varias partes, el largo decidí que fuera de 2 metros, como la pieza va a ser un ensamblaje escultórico, quería que fuera bastante grande, ya que en ocasiones anteriores participe en el salón Arturo Michelena y no quede seleccionado, porque mis piezas eran muy pequeñas, y a los jurados les conviene seleccionar piezas de mayor tamaño, por eso este año fui decidido a crear una gran pieza.
After making all the necessary cuts to obtain the three main parts that make up the structure of this sculpture, I began trimming all the small cross pieces that will give the sculpture strength. Little by little, as I was performing stability tests with the assembled structure, I realized I would need more pieces than I expected for the structure to remain firm, without movement or instability.
Después que realice todos los cortes necesarios para obtener las tres partes principales que conforman la estructura de esta escultura, comencé a recortar todas las pequeñas piezas transversales que le darán firmeza a la escultura; poco a poco mientras iba realizando pruebas de estabilidad con la estructura armada, me di cuenta de que necesitaría más piezas de las que esperaba para que la estructura se mantuviera firme sin movimientos e inestabilidad.
In total I took out 16 pieces that when assembled give life to this magnificent sculpture representing a Huerenas warrior (indigenous ethnic group), but now I had to take it apart again to be able to paint it, because the next day I had to take it to the National Art Gallery, which was the reception center for the works for the call, and until that day there was no opportunity to deliver.
En total saque 16 piezas que al ser ensambladas dan vida a esta magnífica escultura que representa a un guerrero Huerenas (etnia indígena), pero ahora tenía que desarmarlo nuevamente para poder pintarlo, porque al día siguiente lo tenía que llevar a la Galería de Arte Nacional que era el centro de recepción de las obras para la convocatoria, y hasta ese día había oportunidad de entregar.
As soon as I took it apart, I started painting one side of the pieces, giving it about eight hours to dry. Then I turned them over and painted the other side. I did it all against the clock. The next day they were still a little damp, and I had to let them dry longer, so I didn't have a chance to put it back together to take pictures of it once it was painted. I had to wrap everything up and take all the pieces with me to deliver to the gallery.
Apenas lo desarmé, comencé a pintar una de las caras de las piezas, para darle unas ocho horas de secado, luego voltearlas y pintar la otra cara, todo lo hice contra reloj; al día siguiente todavía estaban un poco húmedas y tuve que dejarlas más tiempo secando, por eso no me dio chance de volverla a armar para tomarle fotos ya pintado. tuve que envolver todo y llevarme todas las piezas para entregarla en la galería.
When I arrived at the gallery, I hoped to be able to assemble the sculpture, but they wouldn't let me. I listed all the pieces in the order they go and left them a sketch to guide them when they assembled it to present to the selection panel. While I was in the gallery unwrapping the pieces, despite doing everything with great care and protection, using paper and plastic to protect the paint, I felt there were several minor aesthetic details that might work against me in the eyes of the panel. I hope everything goes well and my piece is selected to be exhibited at the Museum of Culture in Valencia. I hope you like this post. Good vibes.
Cuando llegue a la Galería esperaba poder armar la escultura pero no me dejaron, enumere todas las piezas en el orden en que van y les deje un croquis para que se guíen cuando la vayan a armar para presentarla al jurado seleccionador; estando en la galería desenvolviendo las piezas, a pesar de que realice todo con muchísimo cuidado y protección usando papeles y plásticos para que la pintura no se afectara, siento que hay varios detallitos estéticos que puede que jueguen en mi contra con la visión de los jurado, espero que todo salga bien y mi pieza quede seleccionada para ser expuesta en el museo de la cultura en Valencia.
