¿Las media naranjas ruedan? | Does half oranges roll? [ES/EN]

Hola a todos y todas. El motivo de esta publicación iba a ser por el 14 de febrero, pero por diferentes cuestiones no pudo ser así. Sin embargo, eso no es problema, porque nunca es tarde para hablar del tema que les traigo en esta ocasión: el mito de la media naranja.

No podría empezar sin antes citar una frase que nos dijo una de las profesoras del postgrado de género y comunicación que recientemente estuve haciendo, que parafraseándola sería algo así:

«Si fuéramos dos media naranjas no podríamos rodar porque estaríamos de cara al suelo. Somos naranjas enteras que ruedan juntas».

Cada vez que volvemos sobre la idea de la media naranja, estamos asumiendo una visión incompleta de nosotras y nosotros mismos, cuyo objetivo principal en la vida sería alcanzar la completitud mediante el encuentro con esa pareja que nos complementa. Entonces, ese encuentro esperado se convertiría en un encuentro con aquello que nos falta o con aquello que carece en nosotros; como si fuésemos una especie de imanes que se atraen por tener diferentes polaridades. Aquí hay dos cuestiones fundamentales que abordar y que intentaré elaborar el día de hoy: el hecho de que nos emparejemos con personas diferentes a nosotros, y el tema de la completitud o no.

Si nos ponemos a pensar detenidamente, ¿es así que ocurre en la vida real?, o sea, ¿tendemos a enamorarnos o a emparejarnos con personas que son totalmente diferentes a nosotros o nosotras por el simple hecho de portar lo que no nos constituye? Probablemente la respuesta de la mayoría sería que sí, precisamente porque ocurre que las diferencias son las que más llaman la atención, porque son las que saltan más rápido a la vista al suponer rupturas con lo que estamos acostumbrados o acostumbradas a lidiar; se salen del campo de lo conocido, lo cómodo.

¿Pero qué si yo les hablara de que existe un principio llamado «principio de homofilia», que explica que las personas tienden a relacionarse con personas con rasgos similares o cosas en común? El principio de homofilia se refiere a la tendencia de las personas a relacionarse con otras que son similares a ellas en términos de características como intereses, actitudes, valores, edad, género, educación, etc. Este concepto ha sido estudiado en sociología y psicología social para comprender cómo se forman las redes sociales y cómo las similitudes entre individuos influyen en la formación de relaciones interpersonales. La homofilia puede contribuir a la cohesión social al generar lazos más fuertes entre individuos con características comunes. También puede tener implicaciones en la segregación social y la formación de grupos cerrados.

Además, existen estudios como por ejemplo, uno publicado en Nature Human Behavior, en los que se analizan diferentes rasgos que pueden ir desde actitudes hasta gustos muy personales, y cuyos resultados arrojan gran porcentaje de similitud entre parejas sexoafectivas. Lógicamente, esto tampoco quiere decir que nuestras parejas tengan que ser totalmente iguales a nosotros y nosotras, ni se está negando el hecho de que en varias cuestiones sí buscamos una complementariedad. Se trata de que, por lo general, solemos notar y sobredimensionar nuestras diferencias porque, como ya decía, son esas cosas que por romper con lo que comúnmente tenemos concebido, nos llaman más la atención y solemos darle una relevancia en cuanto al papel que juegan a la hora de buscar pareja, que no es la que tienen.

Piénsatelo, por ejemplo, así: ¿realmente crees que tú, persona con pensamientos a favor del desarme armamentístico o activista por el medioambiente, vas a buscar como pareja a una persona que, por el contrario, apuesta por el genocidio que se está llevando a cabo en Palestina? Sin ánimos de caer en el juicio a las convicciones de cada quien, esto es solamente una posibilidad de tantas que existen en las que es, -y hago énfasis-, muy poco probable que ambas personas se junten, aunque no imposible.

Por otro lado, ¿estamos realmente incompletos como para buscar en otra persona lo que falta en nosotros o nosotras? Qué fatídico, ¿no? Si realmente fuera así el fin último de nuestras vidas sería buscar pareja, ya que, de alguna forma, fuimos privados o privadas de «algo» que nos corresponde buscar. Pero entonces elevamos más la lupa y vemos que en nuestras sociedades de hoy existe un gran desarrollo socioeconómico, y que gracias a los beneficios que ello conlleva, las personas, sobre todo las mujeres, se han desamarrado un poco de las relaciones de pareja para lanzarse a por logros personales y profesionales. Pues qué raro que para obtener esos logros no hubiesen necesitado a alguien que les completara.

Esta noción de la media naranja, en mi criterio, parte de haber romantizado la herencia cristiana del matrimonio y el modelo de la relación monógama heterosexual, que además, es otra idea preestablecida y normativa susceptible a desmontarse, pero eso es ya otro tema. El punto es que, al haber asumido el modelo monógamo del matrimonio cristiano, y al ser la iglesia católica por mucho tiempo un instrumento para la dominación y aparato represivo del control estatal, pues se implantó la idea de que no estamos completos, y que nuestro objetivo es lograr estarlo mediante esa otra persona que tampoco lo está, y así, de paso, garantizar la reproducción de las fuerzas laborales para sostener un sistema sociopolítico determinado que necesita de ellas.

Pues la buena noticia, querido lector o lectora, es que no estamos incompletos, o al menos no debido a que alguien más tenga lo que no tenemos y que debido a ello tengamos que darnos a la tarea de buscar incansablemente a quien nos complete. Por el contrario, nuestras metas en la vida pueden ir desde tener nuestro propio negocio al doblar de la esquina, hasta lograr resultados innovadores en alguna rama de la ciencia, pero para ello no es estrictamente necesario contar con alguien más.

En cada uno de nosotros y nosotras está el potencial suficiente para lograr lo que nos propongamos, y aunque no lo sepamos ver o aunque no podamos aprovecharlo o usarlo, la limitación nunca va a estar en la falta de una pareja sexoafectiva. La limitación puede que esté en el contexto, en el acceso a oportunidades, en el contar o no con redes de apoyo, en nuestra historia de vida, en nuestros límites anatómicos, en nuestra clase económica, etc., pero nunca en la ausencia o no de pareja.

Hello to all of you. The reason for this publication was going to be for February 14, but for different reasons it could not be. However, that is not a problem, because it is never too late to talk about the topic I bring you this time: the myth of the better half.

I could not start without quoting a phrase that one of the professors of the postgraduate course on gender and communication that I was recently doing told us, which I paraphrase would be something like this:

"If we were two half oranges we wouldn't be able to roll because we would be facing the ground. We are whole oranges that roll together".

Every time we come back to the idea of the half-orange, we are assuming an incomplete vision of ourselves, whose main goal in life would be to reach completeness through the encounter with that partner who complements us. Then, that expected encounter would become an encounter with that which we lack or that which is lacking in us; as if we were a kind of magnets that attract each other because we have different polarities. There are two fundamental issues to address here that I will try to elaborate on today: the fact that we are paired with people who are different from us, and the issue of completeness or not.

If we think carefully, is this how it happens in real life, that is, do we tend to fall in love or pair up with people who are totally different from us simply because they carry what does not constitute us? Probably the answer of the majority would be yes, precisely because it happens that the differences are the ones that attract the most attention, because they are the ones that jump more quickly to the sight when they suppose ruptures with what we are used to or accustomed to deal with; they go out of the field of the known, the comfortable.

But what if I were to tell you that there is a principle called the "principle of homophily," which explains that people tend to relate to people with similar traits or things in common? The principle of homophily refers to the tendency of people to relate to others who are similar to them in terms of characteristics such as interests, attitudes, values, age, gender, education, etc. This concept has been studied in sociology and social psychology to understand how social networks are formed and how similarities between individuals influence the formation of interpersonal relationships. Homophily can contribute to social cohesion by generating stronger ties between individuals with common characteristics. It may also have implications for social segregation and the formation of closed groups.

In addition, there are studies, such as one published in Nature Human Behavior, which analyze different traits ranging from attitudes to very personal tastes, and whose results show a high percentage of similarity between sex-affective couples. Logically, this does not mean that our partners have to be totally the same as us, nor does it deny the fact that in several issues we do seek complementarity. It is that, in general, we tend to notice and overestimate our differences because, as I said, they are those things that, by breaking with what we have commonly conceived, attract our attention and we tend to give them a relevance in terms of the role they play when looking for a partner, which is not what they have.

Think about it, for example, like this: do you really think that you, a person with thoughts in favor of the disarmament of weapons or an activist for the environment, are going to look for a partner for a person who, on the contrary, supports the genocide that is taking place in Palestine? Without wishing to pass judgment on the convictions of each person, this is only one of many possibilities that exist in which it is, and I emphasize, very unlikely that the two people would get together, although not impossible.

On the other hand, are we really incomplete enough to seek in another person what is missing in us? How fateful, isn't it? If it were really so, the ultimate goal of our lives would be to look for a partner, since, somehow, we were deprived or deprived of "something" that is ours to look for. But then we raise the magnifying glass higher and we see that in our societies today there is a great socioeconomic development, and that thanks to the benefits that this entails, people, especially women, have unmoored themselves a little from relationships in order to pursue personal and professional achievements. It is strange that in order to obtain these achievements, they would not have needed someone to complete them.

This notion of the better half, in my opinion, is based on having romanticized the Christian heritage of marriage and the model of the monogamous heterosexual relationship, which is also another pre-established and normative idea that can be dismantled, but that is another matter. The point is that, having assumed the monogamous model of Christian marriage, and the Catholic Church being for a long time an instrument for domination and repressive apparatus of state control, the idea was implanted that we are not complete, and that our goal is to be complete through that other person who is not either, and thus, in passing, ensure the reproduction of labor forces to sustain a particular socio-political system that needs them.

Well, the good news, dear reader, is that we are not incomplete, or at least not because someone else has what we do not have and that because of this we have to give ourselves the task of tirelessly searching for someone to complete us. On the contrary, our goals in life can range from having our own business around the corner, to achieving innovative results in some branch of science, but for that it is not strictly necessary to count on someone else.

In each one of us there is enough potential to achieve whatever we propose, and even if we do not know how to see it or even if we cannot take advantage of it or use it, the limitation will never be in the lack of a sex-affective partner. The limitation may be in the context, in the access to opportunities, in having or not having support networks, in our life history, in our anatomical limits, in our economic class, etc., but never in the absence or not of a partner.
