BATTLE LINK -- July 7, 2024 -- Day 189 of 366 vs. @buloy
Today's battle comes from Modern Champion 3 ranked play against a very familiar opponent, Buloy, my Tier 5 Fray 20 brawl rival from The Guild of @neoxian. The battle is an extremely narrow duel, with 13 mana, only the fire element, and three rulesets: Rise of the Commons, Close Range, and Aimless.
My opponent gave Grim Smith a magic attack and hoped he was strong enough to outlast whatever attack was thrown its way. Moxian Rebel provided extra magic damage, but its camouflage ability couldn't protect it from scattershot attacks. His strategy should have worked too, since the two range attackers in the back would simply cancel out the armor that Grim Smith repairs each round.
But enter my hero and featured card, the 1-mana neutral common from Chaos Legion -- Chaos Agent. This guy is awesome at what it does, providing a hard-to-hit monster for all three attack types (thanks phase) with its high speed and dodge ability. The backfire ability is where it gets really spicy, dealing two damage anytime an opposing monster misses an attack.
Little did I know, it was the Chaos Agent's backfire ability that won me this battle. My strategy was to get as much health out on the battlefield as possible while using Lux to shield and speed up my two range attackers in the back. I didn't give much thought for the possibility of Grim Smith from my opponent.
Luckily, Grim Smith's big weakness, its slow speed, was its downfall. After polishing off my melee attacker in two rounds, Grim Smith struggled to land an attack on my Agent. Those backfire misses were integral to the victory!
The combination of the backfire damage and both range attacks meant I got through Grim's armor to deal one damage in the rounds it missed its attack. My Chaos Agent did DOUBLE the damage without an attack than Grim did with one! Slowly but surely, Grim had awful aim and died a slow death.
Hard not to choose this rare failure by one of Modern's most-played meta cards, Grim Smith. However, there were quite a few more fun battles from Sunday that I want to share, so I'll get another edition of Bonus Battles up later today!
