I had a plan. Really, I did.
The rational side of me was leaning toward buying cards off the market—slowly, steadily, smartly—so I could begin building out my maxed Conclave Arcana set. But the other side? The part of me that chases that adrenaline rush of cracking open packs in search of those glorious Black Foils, Variants, and the ultra-rare Yabanius? Yeah… that side took over hard.
The Pull That Pulled Me Under
At first, I told myself I’d stick to Standard Packs—get some basic inventory built up, maybe fill in some gaps, and play the long game. But the siren song of the Alchemy Packs got louder and louder.
What if there’s a Black Foil inside? What if it’s a Legendary Variant? What if I get lucky… again?
I gave in.
I stacked some Midnight Potions, went all-in on 80 Alchemy Packs, and dove into what I hoped would be a legendary opening session.
Instead, I got a reality check.
Despite all the potion-boosted openings, my only Black Foil was a Common—yes, a single Common—and no Yabanius, no standout Legendary, no wild value spikes. I knew in my gut it wasn’t a good haul, but to confirm the pain, I did something I never do: checked the value on @PeakMonsters Explorer.
That was the moment of truth.
Only 60% of my cost was recouped—and that’s not even factoring in the opportunity cost of what those funds could have bought on the market.
Taking the Loss, Gaining Perspective
Let’s be honest: this one stung. It was a clear loss, not just financially, but mentally. I let greed win. I abandoned my plan. And Splinterlands, in true RNG fashion, reminded me that no one stays lucky forever.
But that’s part of the game. Part of the economy. Part of what keeps it interesting.
The highs can be euphoric (I’ve had them before), but the lows? They’re the reality check. They force you to reassess, recalibrate, and—most importantly—learn.
Back to the Drawing Board
So here I am, back to square one when it comes to maxing my Conclave Arcana set. But with a bit more humility and a renewed sense of discipline.
I’ll likely go back to buying cards directly from the market, especially now that I know what 80 packs didn’t do for my collection. I’ll keep an eye out for opportunities, maybe even turn this L into a long-term win by targeting underpriced gems or doubling down when the time’s right.
Yes, I got burned, but it won’t keep me down.
This is all part of the journey in Splinterlands—the game within the game. And while luck wasn’t on my side this time, I know the long-term reward still comes to those who build, strategize, and adapt.
