I was going through my old Google Drive folders as I wanted to backup and clean whatever I had there, and stumbled upon some videos I had recorded of a game I hadn't seen in a good while...all the way back in 2016. That's why this one's a nostalgia trip, because I haven't played this one in a long time, but the memories came flooding back from then when I did, specially with how things were quite different at the time.
What is even this thing?
Since this is kind of an oddly specific game which can be confused with the more well-known Bomberman Online for the Dreamcast, which had that name because it was its highlight feature on the console that had went for native online multiplayer support if you had the right equipment for it, I'll give you a quick rundown about what this is supposed to be.
According to Wikipedia, this Bomberman Online was released in 2003 for Japan and other few select regions, but only lasted a maximum of two years open in these. If this was ever playable outside of those though, that's thanks to someone called Broomop who had managed to setup a fan server of this game all the way back in 2007.
So in essence, the game I'm talking about is a very old and short-lived online game that was given life soon after it went down, and had been working for a handful of years...
...But it might have expired its shelf life now.
Tried whatever username and password I might have had for this but nothing gets beyond the Server Connecting screen, and even the Register page in the website is broken as it does not signup when filling everything due to an error.
So unless the very unlikely case of someone contacting me to tell me that this actually still can work but I need to work around it...this might as well be a post-mortem about a little fan server game that had lasted surprisingly lost until sometime after 2020, as that was seemingly the last time there was a big update to this server...
...Or so I thought.
Turns out I still had a contact with Broomop and asked him about it, and got told the server was indeed down since a week ago, but that's all what was up with it. With that addressed, and a new account since I had forgot my password for my previous one, I was able to get in the game again.
...But you cannot play this alone, as there's no bots and there's obviously no one playing this at the moment of writing this, which means that what I will be describing now will be mainly off the memories I have of this game, which thankfully very much match up with the footage I had rediscovered.
The simplest way to play back in the day, but with a caveat
Before the days of rollback netcode for PS1 and Dreamcast emulators, the existence of the Power Bomberman fangame (which features online) and even an official resurgence of Bomberman for PC owners through the release of Super Bomberman R, this was the one sorta reliable way you could get to play Bomberman online in your PC if you didn't have a clue about emulation or didn't know/want to hassle with Atomic Bomberman as that was another way if you could get it working.
You could say from the trailer that this game was kinda packed with stuff, with several maps and two extra modes aside from the standard survival mode...but the truth is that every time I played this, people only played the Survival mode in the raceway stage for a simple reason: It was the fastest one to play at all times.
I think I never played the other stages ever, as you couldn't start a game alone, but with how in this stage you move moderately fast but not absurdly fast, it can be assumed that the walking speed by default in this game was quite the slow pace, which is why people that are gathering to play online with others would prefer the fastest speed to hurry up with the action versus players.
This game's netcode was ancient for the time I ended up playing, which resulted in a particular oddity if you didn't have ports forwarded for this game (a concept some of you might be familiar if you have tried to host dedicated servers for game before since it is often a requisite for others to be able to join without a VPN like Hamachi or Radmin): Everyone but you would basically appear teleporting choppily at almost all times.
It does look pretty simple but it was a lot of fun whenever the teleporting thing didn't happen as it made it quite tough to keep track of when someone was going for me, but mainly it was all the novelty of being able to play a Bomberman game online with other players after years of only playing Atomic Bomberman and other games exclusively with the AI. I did get to play a handful of times Atomic Bomberman online around that time (though that's a bit of a long story) but that also ended up fizzling up in activity way earlier...though it is amusing that I can say that I had been playing Bomberman online with russians as a kid 😂
The presentation was simple enough but stuck on my head from the CGI Bomberman characters you could choose if you could get them and the people that happened to play with custom avatars instead of those, and the music was taken from the Dreamcast game as well.
With all of this said...what is there for this game today?
An outdated relic of its time?
Despite my strong feelings of nostalgia due to the time when I had played this, its kind of self-explanatory why this one has been forgotten for a good while: Aside from how it seems unclear whether the small community this game had is still out there or not, the alternatives I've mentioned, from the free and much more modern Power Bomberman fangame, to the new and official Super Bomberman R games, to even being able to emulate and play online the PS1 or Dreamcast Bomberman games if that tickles your fancy...
To me, this is a very defined example of how the sands of time can bury these old PC online games no matter how much we had been attached to them the years they were active and we played them, even when these are also revivals of long-defunct official games for that matter.
If I happen to be able to explore this game properly whenever I find someone else that happens to be willing to stick their head in this same old game with me, as unlikely as that might sound, I would definitely like to document before this game's long-lasting humble server goes down for good with how it seems to be on the lifeline, currently only alive due to the cheap server costs despite how it hasn't been played in a while.
