This is the story how I went from a small Private, having not played the original Hydro Thunder in a good while, to a powerboat driving Sergeant with all tracks completed at least once on my belt.
Well, no more time to chit-chat, right? Say it with me...
HYDROOOO THUNDEEEEEERRRRRR
Okay, so what's the fuzz about?
I already talked about the official sequel to this game, Hydro Thunder Hurricane, which was surprisingly well received here and had a warm feeling to hear that many had nostalgia for it, knowing that I saw the game for the first time as a kid and was pretty obsessed with it due to how cool it looked.
And also had briefly mentioned H2Overdrive, but I'll keep that one for later not only in how it derives from HT, but also now that I'm more familiar with this game, can compare what things it does different.
So the only game that was left to be mentioned in this trilogy of powerboat arcade racing with at least a few words...is the very first Hydro Thunder.
The game seems simple in theory: Throttle forward or backward, steering and boosting- which you can do if you grab the Blue and Red boost capsules that grant 4 and 9 seconds of boost each.
But like any competent arcade racer, it's all in mechanics and track design that can easily make you fall flat to the floor [or water] if you jump into this game without knowing anything. At least specifically if you are expecting to steal first place in most races.
First: Shorcuts. Sounds simple, but most can have extra booster pickups for you to take and keep boosting away to catch up with the pack, as well as some just being good as plain-old-shortcuts overall. Some are hidden but easy to take if you know where to go...while others are at plain sight, but require you to know a key strat in this game.
The Hydro Jump.
While Hurricane simplifies this into a single button, in this game [and H2Overdrive] you have to do a specific combo. In the Arcade, it would have been to pull the throttle back and hit the Boost button...but in consoles/PC with controllers or keyboard, it goes more like:
- Be accelerating at a decent speed
- Let go of accel and slam the brake immediately
- Hit the boost after you brake.
If you let go of brake quickly after you hit the boost and do the jump, it will be a smaller one- which can actually be useful later as I'll explain. But if you hold the brake as you hit the boost, you'll do a higher jump which is on the flipside great for getting to THOSE suspiciously high ledges with boosters on them. And more so if you can do a second Hydro Jump after you are about to land from a first one.
The Hydro Jump can only be done with boost on your gauge, so take that in mind and look at your boost gauge if you plan to do big jumps at given moments on a race.
Getting the timing down can be pretty fickle at first, and even I sometimes somehow miss the Hydro Jump from working, but not only the ability to take shortcuts exclusive to it is too good to pass up knowing how most of those are often key in actually taking first in races, but also can be real dandy-
Oh, that reminds me...ever heard of Castle von Dandy?
Yeah, sorry, I just wanted to have an excuse to put up that silly preview picture for a bonus track, because that is indeed in the game. Although it is a pretty cool looking track instead of just...this guy. Still don't know why they did it, but it's really funny.
Anyways, where was I? Oh, the Hydro Jump.
If you are going at high speeds from boosting and do an Hydro Jump, you'll retain that speed while mid-air. So with good timing and ingenuity, you can boost to max speed and try to chain Hydro Jumps so that you can keep high speeds while saving on boost.
That's all in the mechanics themselves, but know that there's boats that are faster than others but their handling vary, like the Hard boat RAD HAZARD being the fastest in straight lines...but also being a very drifty boat which forces you to have good knowledge of the track beforehand to turn in advance.
So, boats, track knowledge for boost pickups/cuts, and Hydro Jumping. That's all.
...That's all?
You would expect this to be harder as a Midway racer to chip off your coins [and to be fair, if you get in there and don't know how to play, it will...but on the arcade version if you can get first place, you can continue playing for free], but it actually feels fairly rewarding to master the Hydro Jump and track layouts to get your victories, rather than a consistent chore to redo tracks due to a slight misinput in your turn sending your vehicle away due to physics.

And yet, the game itself does provide that strength in replayability and mastery because it gives you those mechanics and track strategizing to go through, rather than only being confined to driving and boosting.
Oh, and there's a Super Start mechanic too...but for some reason it seems that the way I do it and the way players online describe it seem to be opposite lol [but the basic is that you go Reverse at 3, Forward before 2 appears, Reverse before 1 appears and then slam Forward + Boost right before Go]
Oh, right, single player progression
In the arcade version, I think you could play all tracks by default except the two bonus tracks, which I assume you'd only get if you completed the rest in one go.
In home ports though, you only start with three tracks and three boats in the Easy category. Which might sound restrictive at first, but for beginners to start learning, it makes a lot of sense, while giving players a choice in variety of boat and tracks to pick up first compared to Hydro Thunder Hurricane only giving you a single race track and boat for you to play and then unlock more.
The progression itself is also a natural ramp-up of sorts. In the Easy tracks, you need 3rd or better to be considered completed. In Medium tracks, you need 2nd or better. And of course, in the Hard tracks onwards, it's 1st Place or nothing, which carries over to the Bonus tracks you unlock one after the other if you clear all Hard tracks. The other difficulty boats also unlock with said tracks.
To be honest, it was quite fun to go through everything in somehow the span of just one day in the super solid PC version, as the first six tracks I managed to do in my first attempts altogether [although I had previous practice from the N64 version of HT days ago], but the Hard and Bonus tracks took me several attempts each, especially Catacombs.
...Except Castle von Dandy. Not a dig at the dandy, but I found very funny that I managed to clear that one three lapper in my first visit, compared to the other bonus tracks [especially Catacombs forcing you to really plan well how to take all boosters...and it was the first bonus track].
The Dreamcast version does have higher quality audio and two player support, while the N64 version is the only one with four player support, but for quick and reliable runs, the PC version has been great stuff to play with.
I have gained quite the respect for this game in managing to strike a balance between classic Midway bullshit in difficulty while being simple yet not TOO simple in how to play to master. The powerboat theme was already something that made it stand out back in the day, more so with the graphics it had, but today as an arcade racer, even if it doesn't have extra modes per se, getting good with the mechanics and tracks packs a harder punch than I expected.
...Oh yeah, and shoutouts to CHUMDINGER, the fishing boat with a man and his dog. Actually goes pretty crazy if you can Hydro Jump to keep high boosts speeds as it turns on a dime over water.

Algunos están ocultos pero son fáciles de tomar si sabes dónde ir... mientras que otros están a la vista, pero requieren que conozcas una estrategia clave en este juego.
El salto hidráulico / Hydro Jump.
Mientras que Hurricane lo simplifica en un solo botón, en este juego [y en H2Overdrive] tienes que hacer un combo específico. En Arcade, habría sido tirar del acelerador hacia atrás y pulsar el botón Boost... pero en consolas/PC con mandos o teclado, es más como:
- Estar acelerando a una velocidad decente
- Suelta el acelerador y pisa el freno inmediatamente
- Pulsa el boost después de frenar.
Si sueltas el freno rápidamente después de pisar el acelerador y haces el salto, será más pequeño, lo que puede ser útil más tarde como explicaré. Pero si mantienes el freno mientras golpeas el impulso, harás un salto más alto, lo que es genial para llegar a ESAS repisas sospechosamente altas con impulsores. Y más aún si puedes hacer un segundo Hydro Jump después de estar a punto de aterrizar de un primero.

Si vas a gran velocidad por el impulso y haces un salto hidráulico, conservarás esa velocidad en el aire. Así que, con ingenio y sincronización, puedes alcanzar la velocidad máxima e intentar encadenar saltos hidráulicos para mantener la velocidad mientras ahorras impulso.

...Ah, sí, y saludos a CHUMDINGER, el barco de pesca con un hombre y su perro. La verdad es que se vuelve bastante loco si puedes hacer hidrosaltos para mantener la velocidad mientras gira como una moneda de diez centavos sobre el agua.
