Yep, it's no longer going to be split in days but by parts, because I ended up delaying quite a fair bit between the last time I played MKDS and coming back to it recently 😅
But lo and behold, doing the last two Nitro cups in 100cc was...a more complicated experience than I expected. Like I explained in the first part, 3-Stars are obtained by pretty much avoiding doing any excessive amount of mistakes, getting all 1st Place finishes, and avoiding falling off at all costs [since that instantly tanks your rank below 3 stars].
You CAN bump walls and go over offroad at times, and I can tell you now that getting hit sometimes by Red Shells won't tank your rank - nor getting bombarded with Blue Shells [and you'll see soon how I know that], but you know. Keep your driving sharp - if you know how to snake with miniturbos here then that helps too.
DK Pass is not that hard, stop hitting the walls
So...yeah, when I returned to the game, for some reason I retried the Star Cup like five times because I wanted to make sure I did it as well as possible but kept doing little mistakes.
...I think that's all I have to say of it for now - I got two Blue Shells shot at me in Mario Circuit out of nowhere, but I managed to survive that, and while the spiral at Airship Fortress had me a bit nervous on how to approach all the way down at first, that eventually became a non-issue when I got way ahead of the others in the second lap onwards.
BLUE SHELL LEAVE ME ALONE
When I started doing the Special Cup runs, something hit me like a freight train:
The AI REALLY starts to enjoy throwing Blue Shells frequently when you're frontrunning in this cup.
Long story short, in the first five attempts I did, I was either getting screwed by the AI conveniently getting a Red Shell after I used up my banana or green shell [which is kind of on me too - I never learned to keep those no matter what until my winning run], getting bumped off the spinning thing in Bowser Castle and losing the lead in the last lap...
...Or eating Blue Shells in every single race.
Although I'd like to highlight how in one of those races, the Red Shell SHOWED UP AHEAD OF ME AND LANDED RIGHT ON MY FACE - meaning that in a rare unlucky circumstances, not even holding the item behind you may save you from getting punked.
But let's go back to the Blue Shells, because I swear that was getting ridiculous in no time. In most races, I was getting hit with one, or in a few instances, even two of them - that alongside other little pranks the game was doing on me while I tried to get the coveted three stars, as well as mistakes of mine under being in a more bitter mood than usual [meaning I felt more pressure than I should have], are the reason why I took six attempts total to get the job done.
For a bit I thought that I had exaggerated that I saw four to five blue shells show up in a SINGLE RACE [and at Rainbow Road of all tracks] - but when I was editing a little something to visualize how much I got bombarded with free Blue Shells while trying to get that done...I saw that there indeed was a race where there that many.
The bit from 1:20-2:05 here is from a single Rainbow Road race. You can imagine that I wasn't too amused with that when it happened.
TAKING THE TROPHY HOME AT ONCE
So yeah, the sixth attempt is where I held together everything without many issues. Didn't have really stupid mistakes in the tracks, didn't get more than a single blue shell in three out of four races, dodged the one at Peach Gardens, Bowser Castle thankfully I didn't get Blue Shell'd AND didn't forget to hold bananas/green shells in case of emergency.
I even edited in the final Blue Shell I ate at Rainbow Road at the blue shell video because that alongside the Lightning that struck me right after looked like it would ALMOST have made me fall on the steep lope I was and kill the 3-Star run.
But it didn't.
Hey, you forgot the pickles
Imagine starting a run and getting quite well into Bowser Castle until you realize that you didn't turn on the RetroAchievements at the start.
That's a second go at Banana Cup that wasn't necessary. Whopee.
Oh well, at least the second attempt was smooth cruising. Got a Blue Shell at me in the first race and hit a few walls in GBA Bowser Castle 2, but I still ended the run with 3 Stars when I spent almost all of the races constantly doing driftboosts [practically snaking].
And then Shell Cup 100cc was trivial when I already had cleared it in 150cc. I also recorded and uploaded this 100cc run, but considering I already had showcased that cup at a harder speed last time, sharing the screenshot of proof is enough for me.
What's next?
Well, aside from the obvious last two remaining 100cc cups [which I haven't done yet as of writing this] and diving head first into the 150cc cups...I also had taken the chance to dip my toes again in Diddy Kong Racing - so you may hear me talk about that sometime sooner or later when I progress further than just Dino Domain.
But until then, it's funny to revisit MKDS and have that little split between snaking giving you a BIG advantage over the other racers if you can chain it properly [since you're essentially staying at miniturbo speed way longer than usual]...but at the same time the AI may feel like sending tactical nukes straight at you if you get ahead too much and are unlucky.
And I had heard in a few places that the AI at 150cc starts being a bit cheaty even in this game...but I'll have to find that out myself to see if it is true or if it isn't as bad as I've seen in SMK/MK64. Although it will probably give me trouble to 3-Star either way.
