When discussing Mega Man X games, you'll often see the highest praised to the first, second and fourth game, with some people having this game go alongside those, while others lump it with the more divisive X5, X6 and the most hated X7...or is left in the middle of the road alongside X8.
But my consensus is that there's many things that are mroe convoluted than the previous games, or just not well conveyed at all if you were to do a mostly blind playthrough like I did [where I had previous knowledge from playing it years ago...but far less than the other games], let alone a completely blind one.
I gained some more appreciation for the game not going completely south in the way it was designed thanks to a certain hack I played that streamlined a few key things, but while the design is certainly solid even if noticeably less so than X1 and X2, how you'll feel about the game will depend on how much the pet peeves of it really bother you, as well as if you are well informed on the weird quirks before playing or not.
Having to Mega Tough It Up like a Man
While the level design is often less complex or engaging that the first two games, the thing that you'll quickly notice is that the enemies here can be a bit bothersome than before with the way they are and how they are used in the levels.
This crab thing that climbs in walls is the simplest example: It moves up and down walls and shoots sparks diagonally that bounce off everything. You can see them in the Intro Stage and dispose of them quickly...
...But if you head to Tunnel Rhino's stage, you have to figure how to get out the two crabs that are now in the vertical climb you have to do.
And that's not talking about boss themselves: Almost all of them can be trivialized as usual with their corresponding weaknesses, but if you don't have them [or are fighting them all Buster only at first...which is what I did yet again], then you'll have to figure them out with the constant risk of these bosses hitting hard.
So...while levels are simpler, enemies can be more annoying in general and bosses hit harder than usual. That doesn't sound too bad, right? Just a sequel that tries to make things tough for experienced players.
Well...
The eternal and unexplained struggle to get everything
So, you want to get all items? I know I wanted to, just like I did with the previous two runs bar looking up the super secret item requeriments and locations.
Well, if you want ALL items, which are necessary for the super secret upgrades as usual, here not only you need to find an extra set of items, the Ride Armors, on top of the usual suspects [heart upgrades, sub-tanks, armor pieces]...but you have to ignore the game's new capsules.
That's right, you have to IGNORE the new Enhancement Chip capsules, which are red instead of blue, if you want to get the super secret upgrade.
Each chip requires the specific armor piece obtained: Can only get the Buster chip if you have the Buster upgrade, Body chip for Body upgrade, you get it. They actually have neat utilities for the most part, such as the Body chip decreasing damage taken, the Buster chip enabling a special weapon slot that allows you to constantly use charged shots, and the Leg chip that allows you to double air dash.
But the kicker is that, again, you CANNOT pick up any of these if you want the Gold Armor, which already requires having everything else, because if you get to where it appears with everything but have a Chip equipped, it will not appear.
Functionally, the secret armor is the definitive upgrade over getting any chips early as you get the effect of ALL FOUR chips at the same time...but not only you wouldn't know going in blind that getting any of them would lock you out of getting it, but if you already know that you have to AVOID the red capsules...then you wouldn't actually ever read what each chip does from approaching the capsules.
That's how I went through the endgame of X3 without even knowing I had access to a double air dash.
On the note of things to obtain, while I had quite a few more rants in my first draft of talking about this game that got cut, I took the liberty of bring over two storytale gems from it because, again, can't talk about a Mega Man X game without ever mentioning at least one side effect in my run from refusing to search the item locations on internet 🤠
[insert sigh sound effect here]
Once again, I ended up in a situation similar to X2 where I had two specific items missing from my inventory to find in order to go to the final stages for the final upgrades, and relying on the game's hint tool, here being the Head Part for the armor showing a minimap at the start of the level with a relatively vague indicator of where any missing items were in it.
The first one was Crush Crawfish's life up item, which according to the minimap, was around here- and I knew that the lower item was the enhancement chip you get not too far away from the start with a ride armor. The problem was getting to connect the upper item signal to anywhere...as the level didn't seem to have any upper paths at all.
It was only after several, and I mean SEVERAL minutes of trying in the wrong places and exploring other parts of the level before I got the head parts that I found the head parts, was still looking aimlessly in the wrong places, and then...
You got to be kidding me.
YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.
ALL THE TIME THAT WAS THERE AT ALMOST PLAIN SIGHT
...Okay, that's one down. So the other one left is in Toxic Seahorse and...huh.
At first, I kept thinking that it had to be an area before the underwater section because the only thing nearby in the upper path after destroying the turbines with the Frog Ride Armor was...the enhancement chip capsule.
But then I noticed the suspicious spiky shells at the surface of the water that didn't budge to any charged weapons I tried using.
I don't remember if I actually had a flashback to a trick I had read for getting the sub-tank in Bubble Crab's stage in X2 without his weapon or if I was just trying things like crazy until accidentally discovering the strategy, but turns out you can jump on the surface of the water.
With good timing, you can keep jumping repeatedly to the left in that water surface...and THERE is where you can find the last item.
The worst part was to later see in a video that a fully charged ice weapon could be used to float up there instead of having to do water jumps, a ironic opposite of me taking the intended route in Bubble Crab's item in X2 compared to the harder yet possible itemless strat.
With that said, I finally got the Gold Armor in Doppler Stage 1, and continued playing...
...But now, it is a good opportunity to write a section about baffling design choices in this game. One is tied to the super secret weapon [not to be confused with the upgrade], one is tied to the final boss...and one of them is tied to two key aspects of the MMX games.
The Buster Upgrade isn't that good
Let's get the elephant out of the room. If you played this game and got the Buster Armor part, you know exactly what I'm going to talk about.
In X1, you had a third charge level for the buster, which was alright but not substantially better beyond being mandatory for Sigma's final phase if you are insane instead of using his weakness that does more damage.
In X2, you had the ability to charge TWO full-power shots, and both shots could hit bosses with full damage. This was not only super useful to plow through enemy swarms normally, but also let you hit big against bosses to the point that it was fun to do them all with it instead of relying in the buster [as I mentioned in my X2 review, there's even a few bosses that feel more convenient with it].
So why would you make a WORSE version of the double buster charge idea for this game?
See, X3's buster upgrade had an inventive idea: Instead of two full-charged shots, you had two different shots: An unique first shot that looks like two orbs...and your second stored shot that could either be a half or full charged shot depending of how long you let it charge [purple glow for Lv1 second shot, orange glow for Lv2 second shot].
Charge a full second shot and use it right as you use the first one, and you get this combined big buster attack. Looks cool, seems cool in theory, and doesn't seem too bad if used in levels. But not only the combo shot is SLOW to be effective against mobile bosses, but also does a paltry three points of damage compared to X2's blockbuster damage.
Not only it is less powerful than the X2 buster, but it is also more cumbersome to use if you want to avoid using the combo shot - as you have to make sure that you fire once and wait a bit to fire again. It is a downgrade from being able to hold the buster normally and knowing it will GO when you let go, more so when the new buster charged shots seem to have a slight delay before firing, so muscle memory reactions can also get messed by that.
Basically, your weapon is less snappy to use optimally, and the signature feature it has isn't even that good.
At first, I had an extra spiel about the game forcing you to get the buster upgrade just to get the body upgrade as the intended way to get there is through a charged weapon shot, which you can only do with it...But as I searched about another secret thing, I found out that there IS a way to get it: If you are already relinquishing from the Gold Armor by ignoring the buster upgrade...then go for the Leg Chip.
The double air dash can actually let you get there, as I hadn't mentioned it until now...but X3's Leg Upgrade lets you air dash VERTICALLY, so with that chip, you can airdash up twice and grab the body armor. So you can actually skip the buster upgrade and enjoy your body upgrade, unlikely how I initially thought.
But I think that it doesn't change that the incentive to try for that blind stays missing unless you don't care or know about the Gold Armor, and a very obscure thing to figure out yourself if you were avoiding the chips due to their one-use only nature + locking you out of the Gold Armor.
Oh well, some games are like that: Without knowledge they are a pain...and with some extra knowledge, they can be a little less of a pain.
Moving on to the next pet peeve...
Zero is playable for the first time ever!
For very limited sections of the game.
While the highlight of his playable appearance is busting in at the Intro Stage to save X, in normal levels you can tag him in in normal level areas...but you can only tag him once in a stage, and he has to get out if you approach ANY door.
So yeah, he can be used as a crutch to have a larger healthbar + built-in airdash when playing through some level sections, but as soon as a mini-boss or boss door appears, he's gone for the rest of the level. And if you die as him...he's permanently gone.
The limited usability and fragility of him already would turn off people from using him in the first place as he may as well be useless to experienced players.
Except if you want the secret weapon...
! [Hidden Spoiler Text] ...For which you first need to have went to a Vile Stage [yes, he's back here] with Vile's weakness weapon to kill him off then and there. If you don't use his weakness to finish him [or don't fight him at all], he'll come back again and you'll miss the secret weapon chance. At least the capsules are easy to stumble upon in some stages, but you still need to know what weapon to take there in the first place to do that.
If that is done and you make it to Doppler Stage 2, you have to do something on the same ballpark of ass-backwards logic that X1's Hadoken except even less logical:
You have to take Zero, the character you KNOW you can't take to mini-boss rooms, TO A MINI-BOSS ROOM.
Only in that stage's first miniboss room, and only if you killed Vile early, Zero will actually be able to fight a mosquito boss. And only if you DEFEAT the boss with Zero, it will...autodestruct with Zero. So he'll end up damaged, and give X his Z-Saber as a helping hand.
...So yeah, beyond the conditions that go against the already explained logic of how Zero works in this game, the secret weapon here is his Z-Saber, which works the way it does if you have tried Zero and notice that he can store three shots instead of two- the third shot being his Z-Saber slash.
If you get it with the buster upgrade, it acts the same, only that the slash will instead travel like a projectile too, so it helps on smashing bosses from a distance...
But apparently, and this is something I had to research because it isn't made clear, if you get it without the buster upgrade, it will stay as the melee-only attack.
It seems to sound bad because you have to get closer to bosses...but not only a few of those bosses [COUGH COUGH SIGMA COUGH COUGH] already often need you to be close to land the slash precisely, but also, it will get stored as soon as you use the normal full-charge shot.
So if you don't mind having to get close to hit the slash, it actually lets you ready the saber WAY faster than with the buster upgade as you don't need to wait for two entire shots to be charged and spent. Even though you'll still have to clench your teeth when going for the Z-Saber finish against the final bosses.
It can actually be a hindrance if you would rather keep charging and shooting busters all time because, again, after each fully charged shot, it will have the Z-Saber ready...and it stops your horizontal momentum when used, so aside from having to make the slash count, you can't wiggle out of danger once used mid-air until you touch ground.
With all of that said, it's time to actually touch on the aforementioned final bosses.
It's Sigma again
Hey Sigma.
I'll be honest: My first impressions about this boss were FRUSTRATING. Fireball spam with no room to breath or even figure out what he's actually doing, the windows to hit him without his shield up are precise, and if you are aiming to cheese him with the Z-Saber, you either need to already know exactly the right positions to ambush him with it...or do it like me and try to damage boost to get behind him twice to double tap him with the slash.
I only learned later that there was a consistent pattern and strategy thanks to a certain hack, but going blind into this, the only takeaway I had from this boss was that it was exaggerated compared to his first form in the first two games, and that even the ultimate weapon strategy was a bit annoying to get him with.
Enter Kaiser Sigma.
This hulking thing is simple, in theory. It moves back and forth sometimes, it throws projectiles that can be destroyed with your charged buster, and attacks with an eye beam if it in the right side of the screen sometimes.
Things that are doable to get.
But here's a detail I hadn't mentioned before: Even with the full Gold Armor set, which is basically every single upgrade in the game, you can still die in five to six hits.
That...and if you remember the whole rant about the Buster Upgrade, you know that using your charged shots effectively is harder to do, unless you are constantly timing your charged shots to be Level 2 and let them go before it charges further [which works, but is an extra annoying step when you are more than used to just holding the buster forever until you need to let it go].
So putting aside Sigma himself being terrifying if you haven't figured out or searched on the internet what's the key to his attacks, Kaiser Sigma not only can be harder to figure out blind because of the pressure from the damage it can deal, but also because of the Buster "Upgrade" - unless you do the busterless strategy to get the body armor and use that along with the double air dash to have a more reliable buster.
Or how I did last night as an experiment just to make sure it worked and how practical it was, go for the Z-Saber WITHOUT the buster upgrade and have an easier time having the Z-Saber ready to jump Sigma. It isn't TRIVIAL, absolutely not, but it is easier to not worry about anything but landing the saber in Kaiser Sigma's small head hitbox if you can cahrge it faster than before.
But if you are doing it the fully powered way, Buster Upgrade and Z-Saber...then you'll have to constantly make sure to charge the two shots, waste them and THEN you'll have the Z-Saber ready. And don't forget that in that scenario, it also shoots a projectile.
Said projectile land into Kaiser Sigma's non-vulnerable body and thus make your effort useless until you try again, so more often than not you'll still have to aim for a melee attack anyways just to make sure you actually hit the head.
My bullheaded approach to beating him in that first X3 run was just that: Damage boost to Z-Saber Sigma twice, then repeatedly try and fail to land the Z-Saber at Kaiser Sigma until I got it ONCE and finished what was left of his health with the Buster.
And with that, you've finally...oh. Wait wha-
If you managed to beat both Sigma forms with just little health left, then I would recommend you to use a Sub-Tank NOW if you have any with health available. Because you'll now have to do a quick climb to escape from lava while Sigma's wireframe head tries to knock you into it.
The lava is NOT instakill, but obviously if you have little health left, it can legitimately give you the middle finger by killing you there and having to do the entire fight again.
When I was doing that Z-Saber with no buster upgrade experiement, I actually had died that way once after barely surviving Kaiser Sigma 🤠
But hey, that's vanilla X3 completed with every piece of upgrade you can have at once.
...And while I did use passwords to skip the eight mavericks and scavenger hunt again to experiment with that no buster upgrade idea, managed to go from Doppler 1 to Sigma fight and beating him again after 35 minutes.
What made me appreciate everything more
...And also think about how some of the key pet peeves I have with this game were easily fixable or avoidable. But still.
If you didn't know of it, there's a romhack named Mega Man X3 Zero Project, that initially started as just a hack that tried to make Zero a more properly playable character instead of being extremely situational, but as it kept development, aside from fleshing that out further [Zero is now fully playable virtually anywhere but only has slightly more health than X instead of a full bar - but still can be upgraded], it also had some QOL changes that really made me see things different.
Sure, I already had played through Vanilla X3 so I knew where things were at, so wouldn't be suffering the same scavenger hunt issues as before, but I willingly played the official "worse" version first to have a take on that...and a way to know first-hand how much Zero Project fixed things.
The Buster Upgrade doesn't suck anymore.
First thing I tried when I got to it was to try the advertised combo shot, which in the vanilla game turns out to only do three points of damage.
Not only it was INSTANTLY noticeable that it was really fast [as fast as a normal charged shot], but also, when I used it with bosses, I saw that the spreading orbs that normally only really worked against enemies, could actually damage bosses too.
In other words, the biggest two flaws the buster had, lack of speed to be reliable and lack of damage to make the admission price worth it, were fixed.
Even the Body Armor capsule entrance was changed to NOT require a charged weapon shot, so even if you go in blind, you can actually get that without having to fetch the Leg Upgrade + Chip or the Buster Upgrade + Gravity Well.
And speaking of the chips, you now had to get all chips to get the Gold Armor - you still can only have one active [the last chip capsule you took stays active], but at least you had a reason to collect them while not having to get EVERYTHING just for that big bonus. So the red capsules were actually worth discovering.
As I had a powerful buster now, I didn't go for the Z-Saber this time...and the knowledge of having the double air dash as well as noticing that Sigma did WAY less damage if you had the full upgrade set [WHICH MAKES SENSE]...made me figure out how to fight Sigma with the double buster shot instead of bumrushing with the funny high damage weapon.
Kaiser Sigma still was a lot to keep track of and still did chunky [even if slightly reduced] damage, but because the combo shot was now viable, a certain Gold Armor/Buster Chip feature was now even more powerful.
The Hyper Charge.
Since the Hyper Charge lets you use charged shots without charging as long as you have enough ammo of it [which refills if you take damage], I could actually do what I expected that I could do with Sigma in vanilla X3 when I entered the boss door with everything in hand [which as you know now, was NOT what happened] thanks to the ability of do something as cheesy as repeatedly using a STRONG combo shot through those.
COMPLETE AND ABSOLUTE DESTRUCTION RAHHHHH
And that is what made me see that X3, despite those key flaws, has something that at most, doesn't break the usual X formula so is decent enough, and at best [which would be with this hack], the ideas COULD have been pretty fun in the original game with the changes done here, but at least you can experience that ideal version now even if unofficially. It even had RetroAchievements available :D
The cherry on top of everything is that it also does something that I don't think official X games actually ever let you do: A New Game Plus option, which means that you can replay the entire game with EVERYTHING YOU OBTAINED.
So if you thought that playing X3 with some of its most annoying quirks fixed was redemption enough for its original crimes, then get everything in a full playthrough and then get REVENGE on the entire roster of bosses with your fully armored monster.
Conclusion
I don't want to come off like I hate X3, but I would be lying if I said that its quirks didn't bother me, let alone in that first mostly blind playthrough where I did HATE having to wrestle with the buster upgrade against Sigma or looking for items only to find the chip capsules I had to ignore.
On a revisit, it can make more sense, more so if you wish to go for the no buster upgrade path, but I cannot deny that it was giving me Castlevania Dracula X and Mega Man 1 vibes in that, while not as consistently annoying as those games could be midway thruogh, I certainly felt that aside from being harder due to the overall damage, the final fight even when having everything the game expects you to get is a big annoyance, even if not as instantly cheap as Dracula's instakill pits [CVDX] or having to redo an entire stage with four bosses before Wily if you lost all your lives [MM1].
I know that most of this was definitely dunking on the game's pet peeves, as they are indeed QUITE the peeves for the most part...but ignoring Sigma, the game is otherwise fairly playable even if awkward with those few design choices, which are skippable if you already know them - which still doesn't change that they are there and I suffered them on that first playthrough, and is what I would say that is the issue most people run into when playing this game.
So I wouldn't blame anyone if they end up feeling the need to grab a guide ot find or deal with some things...which is probably what gives me slight dispapointment when X1 and X2 feel doable to get everything without a guide [minus the bonus weapons] - just a bunch of time and exploration with some sense of free-form playability, while in X3 there's many things that seem to require specific knowledge to find without wasting too much time [and in the case of Chips, you would have to find all four capsules to read which one seems the best to keep if you didn't pick up the first one you found].
Zero Project was the only reason I felt compelled to revisit the game after that impression just to see how it improved it [and hoo damn it really did], and it makes a lot of sense to hear that its what most people recommend to play the game when, for X3 veterans, it fixes well known issues...and for complete newcomers, things like the Buster Upgrade and the way Chips work will not feel like a rip-off when you happen to see them on the wild.
Long story short...
- X3 Vanilla: It's good if you know how to play it, but if you don't, you'll need a lot of patience to find things in the right order...and if that isn't enough, get a guide to help you.
- X3 Zero Project: Recommended overall due to the key tweaks making life easier for beginners and veterans alike. QOL and balance tweaks go a long way to make it a smoother run either way.
But if you want to play the original MMX3 on your own to have your own takeaways [putting aside that I...really ended up explaining almost all of the things that are weird to figure out yourself], then go ahead - that's exactly what I did and at least the runtime when I got myself upgraded up to before Sigma's fight was still fun despite everything. Just be prepared for an uphill battle at the end.
So...what's next?
Mega Man X4 is next, of course you could see that coming.
Just like with the X2 post teasing X3, I already have completed X4 at the time of writing this.
Not just once in 2022 as Zero, but recently with X...without using a single upgrade.
I did that for a very specific reason...that I will leave as a cliffhanger for when I get to talk about the game. 🤠
But until then...I'll have to say that I may start looking into other games to visit or revisit after that - although I still have to try the fanmade Mega Man X8 16-bit with how people talk about how quality it is as a MMX game thanks to the liberties and improvements it even when being based off X8.
That is mainly because, while I still could go and do a funny of playing X5 and X6, putting aside the endurance those likely will demand even if I get every upgrade, not just because armors now require all sets to be usable but also because I remember some levels and bosses being real gabage], I realized something...kinda obvious.
Rapidfiring through four Mega Man X [and one classic Mega Man game between X1/X2] with all collectibles, not counting that I replayed X3 through Zero Project the day after vanilla X3 and completing X4 with a challenge run instead of getting everything, seems to getting me burned out from wanting to keep dipping my head into these at the moment.
So who knows if I'll talk about something different after X4...

La eterna e inexplicable lucha por conseguirlo todo
¿Quieres conseguir todos los objetos? Yo sé que quería, al igual que hice con la barra de dos carreras anteriores en busca de los requisitos y ubicaciones de los objetos super secretos.
Pues bien, si quieres TODOS los objetos, que son necesarios para las mejoras super secretas de siempre, aquí no solo tienes que encontrar un conjunto extra de objetos, las armaduras Ride, además de los sospechosos habituales [mejoras de corazón, subtanques, piezas de armadura]... sino que tienes que ignorar las nuevas cápsulas del juego.
Así es, tienes que IGNORAR las nuevas cápsulas de chips de mejora, que son rojas en lugar de azules, si quieres conseguir la mejora supersecreta.
Cada chip requiere la pieza de armadura específica obtenida: Sólo puedes conseguir el chip Buster si tienes la mejora Buster, el chip Body para la mejora Body, ya lo tienes. Una vez más, acabé en una situación similar a la de X2 en la que me faltaban dos objetos específicos de mi inventario por encontrar para poder ir a las fases finales a por las mejoras finales, y confiando en la herramienta de pistas del juego, siendo en este caso la parte de la cabeza de la armadura la que mostraba un minimapa al principio del nivel con un indicador relativamente vago de dónde estaban los objetos que me faltaban.
El primero era el ítem de mejora de vida de Crush Crawfish, que según el minimapa, estaba por aquí- y sabía que el ítem inferior era el chip de mejora que se consigue no muy lejos del inicio con una armadura de paseo. El problema era conseguir conectar la señal del ítem superior a cualquier sitio... ya que el nivel no parecía tener ningún camino superior.
Fue sólo después de varios, y quiero decir VARIOS minutos de intentar en los lugares equivocados y explorar otras partes del nivel antes de conseguir las partes de la cabeza que encontré las partes de la cabeza, todavía estaba buscando sin rumbo en los lugares equivocados, y luego ...

Al principio seguía pensando que tenía que ser una zona anterior a la sección submarina porque lo único que había cerca en el camino superior después de destruir las turbinas con la Armadura Rana era... la cápsula del chip de mejora.
Pero entonces me fijé en los sospechosos caparazones con pinchos que había en la superficie del agua y que no cedieron ante ninguna de las armas cargadas que intenté usar.
No recuerdo si realmente tuve un flashback de un truco que había leído para conseguir el sub-tanque en la fase de Bubble Crab en X2 sin su arma o si simplemente estuve probando cosas como un loco hasta que accidentalmente descubrí la estrategia, pero resulta que puedes saltar sobre la superficie del agua.
Con buen timing, puedes seguir saltando repetidamente hacia la izquierda en esa superficie de agua... y AHÍ es donde puedes encontrar el último ítem.
Lo peor fue ver más tarde en un vídeo que se podía usar un arma de hielo completamente cargada para flotar hasta allí en vez de tener que hacer saltos acuáticos, una ironía opuesta a que yo tomara la ruta prevista en el item de Bubble Crab en X2 en comparación con la strat sin item más difícil pero posible.
Dicho esto, finalmente conseguí la Gold Armor en Doppler Stage 1, y continué jugando...
...Pero ahora, es una buena oportunidad para escribir una sección sobre las desconcertantes elecciones de diseño en este juego. Una está relacionada con el arma supersecreta [no confundir con la mejora], otra con el jefe final... y una de ellas está relacionada con dos aspectos clave de los juegos de MMX.
La mejora del Buster no es tan buena
Saquemos al elefante de la habitación. Si jugaste a este juego y conseguiste la parte de la Buster Armor, sabes exactamente de lo que voy a hablar.
En X1, tenías un tercer nivel de carga para el buster, que estaba bien pero no era sustancialmente mejor más allá de ser obligatorio para la fase final de Sigma si estás loco en vez de usar su debilidad que hace más daño.
En X2, tenías la posibilidad de cargar DOS disparos de máxima potencia, y ambos disparos podían golpear a los jefes con todo el daño. Esto no solo era superútil para atravesar enjambres de enemigos normalmente, sino que también te permitía golpear a lo grande contra los jefes hasta el punto de que era divertido acabar con todos ellos con él en lugar de depender del buster [como mencioné en mi análisis de X2, incluso hay algunos jefes que resultan más cómodos con él].
Entonces, ¿por qué harías una versión PEOR de la idea de la doble carga para este juego?
Verás, la mejora del buster de X3 tenía una idea ingeniosa: en lugar de dos disparos con carga completa, tenías dos disparos diferentes: Un primer disparo único que parecían dos orbes... y un segundo disparo almacenado que podía ser un disparo medio cargado o un disparo completo dependiendo del tiempo que lo dejaras cargar [brillo púrpura para el segundo disparo Lv1, brillo naranja para el segundo disparo Lv2].
Carga un segundo disparo completo y úsalo justo después de usar el primero, y obtendrás un ataque combinado. Parece genial, parece genial en teoría, y no parece tan malo si se usa en niveles. Pero no solo el disparo combinado es LENTO para ser efectivo contra jefes móviles, sino que además hace unos míseros tres puntos de daño comparado con el daño de la gran explosión de X2.
No solo es menos potente que el destructor de X2, sino que también es más engorroso de usar si quieres evitar usar el disparo combinado, ya que tienes que asegurarte de disparar una vez y esperar un poco para volver a disparar. Además, los nuevos disparos cargados del buster parecen tener un ligero retardo antes de disparar, por lo que las reacciones de la memoria muscular también pueden verse afectadas.
Básicamente, tu arma es menos ágil de usar de manera óptima, y la característica de firma que tiene ni siquiera es tan buena.
Al principio, tenía la espinita clavada de que el juego te obligaba a conseguir la mejora de buster sólo para conseguir la mejora de cuerpo, ya que la forma intencionada de conseguirla es a través de un disparo de arma cargada, que sólo puedes hacer con ella... Pero al buscar sobre otra cosa secreta, descubrí que SÍ hay una forma de conseguirla: Si ya estás renunciando a la Armadura Dorada al ignorar la mejora de buster...entonces ve a por el Chip de Pierna.
El doble air dash te puede permitir llegar hasta allí, ya que no lo había mencionado hasta ahora...pero la Mejora de Pierna de X3 te permite hacer air dash VERTICALMENTE, así que con ese chip, puedes hacer air dash hacia arriba dos veces y coger la armadura. Así que en realidad puedes saltarte la mejora de buster y disfrutar de tu mejora de cuerpo, improbable como pensaba inicialmente.
Pero creo que eso no cambia que el incentivo para intentar ese blind sigue desaparecido a menos que no te importe o sepas lo de la Armadura Dorada, y algo muy oscuro de averiguar por ti mismo si estabas evitando los chips debido a su naturaleza de un solo uso + bloquearte la Armadura Dorada.
Oh bueno, algunos juegos son así: Sin conocimiento son un dolor... y con algo de conocimiento extra, pueden ser un poco menos dolorosos.
Pasando a la siguiente manía...
¡Zero es jugable por primera vez!
Para secciones muy limitadas del juego.
Aunque lo más destacado de su aparición jugable es que irrumpe en la fase de introducción para salvar a X, en los niveles normales puedes marcarlo en las zonas normales del nivel... pero solo puedes marcarlo una vez en una fase, y tiene que salir si te acercas a CUALQUIER puerta.
Así que sí, se puede usar como muleta para tener una barra de salud más grande + airdash incorporado al jugar a través de algunas secciones de nivel, pero tan pronto como aparece un mini-jefe o una puerta de jefe, se va para el resto del nivel. Y si mueres como él, desaparece para siempre.
Su limitada usabilidad y fragilidad ya desanimarían a la gente a usarlo en primer lugar, ya que podría ser inútil para los jugadores experimentados.
Excepto si quieres el arma secreta...

Sólo en la primera sala de minjefes de esa fase, y sólo si mataste a Vile pronto, Zero podrá realmente luchar contra un jefe mosquito. Y sólo si DERROTAS al jefe con Zero, se... autodestruirá con Zero. Así que acabará dañado, y le dará a X su Sable Z como ayuda.
...Así que sí, más allá de las condiciones que van en contra de la lógica ya explicada de cómo funciona Zero en este juego, el arma secreta aquí es su Z-Saber, que funciona de la manera que lo hace si has probado Zero y te das cuenta de que puede almacenar tres disparos en lugar de dos- siendo el tercer disparo su tajo Z-Saber.
Si lo consigues con la mejora buster, actúa igual, sólo que el tajo también se desplaza como un proyectil, así que ayuda a aplastar jefes a distancia...

Parece que suena mal porque tienes que acercarte a los jefes... pero no sólo algunos de esos jefes [COUGH COUGH SIGMA COUGH COUGH] ya suelen necesitar que estés cerca para asestar el tajo con precisión, sino que además, se almacenará en cuanto uses el tiro normal de carga completa.
Así que si no te importa tener que acercarte para asestar el tajo, en realidad te permite preparar el sable MUCHO más rápido que con el buster upgade, ya que no tienes que esperar a que se carguen y gasten dos disparos enteros. Aunque tendrás que apretar los dientes para rematar con el sable Z a los jefes finales.
De hecho, puede ser un estorbo si prefieres seguir cargando y disparando todo el rato a los busters porque, de nuevo, después de cada disparo cargado por completo, tendrá el Sable Z listo... y detiene tu impulso horizontal al usarlo, así que, aparte de tener que hacer valer el tajo, no podrás zafarte del peligro una vez usado en el aire hasta que toques el suelo.
Dicho todo esto, es hora de hablar de los mencionados jefes finales.
Es Sigma otra vez

Seré sincero: mis primeras impresiones sobre este jefe fueron FRUSTRABLES. Spam de bolas de fuego sin espacio para respirar o siquiera averiguar qué está haciendo realmente, las ventanas para golpearle sin su escudo son precisas, y si estás intentando golpearle con el sable Z, o bien necesitas conocer exactamente las posiciones correctas para emboscarle con él... o hacer como yo e intentar aumentar el daño para llegar detrás de él dos veces y golpearle dos veces con el tajo.
Más tarde me enteré de que había un patrón y una estrategia consistentes gracias a cierto hack, pero yendo a ciegas en esto, lo único que saqué de este jefe fue que era exagerado comparado con su primera forma en los dos primeros juegos, y que incluso la estrategia del arma definitiva era un poco molesta para atraparlo.
Entra Kaiser Sigma.
Esta cosa enorme es simple, en teoría. Se mueve hacia adelante y hacia atrás a veces, lanza proyectiles que pueden ser destruidos con su buster cargado, y ataca con un rayo ocular si en el lado derecho de la pantalla a veces.
Cosas que son factibles de conseguir.
Pero aquí hay un detalle que no había mencionado antes: Incluso con el set completo de Armadura Dorada, que son básicamente todas las mejoras del juego, puedes morir en cinco o seis golpes.
Eso... y si recuerdas toda la perorata sobre la mejora del Buster, sabrás que usar tus disparos cargados de forma efectiva es más difícil, a menos que estés constantemente sincronizando tus disparos cargados para que sean de nivel 2 y los sueltes antes de que se carguen más [lo que funciona, pero es un paso molesto extra cuando estás más que acostumbrado a aguantar el buster para siempre hasta que necesitas soltarlo].

No es TRIVIAL, en absoluto, pero es más fácil no preocuparse de nada más que de aterrizar el sable en el pequeño hitbox de la cabeza de Kaiser Sigma si puedes cahrgearlo más rápido que antes.
Pero si lo haces de la forma totalmente potenciada, Buster Upgrade y Z-Saber... entonces tendrás que asegurarte constantemente de cargar los dos disparos, gastarlos y LUEGO tener el Z-Saber listo. Y no olvides que en ese escenario, también dispara un proyectil.
Dicho proyectil aterrizará en el cuerpo no vulnerable de Kaiser Sigma y, por tanto, hará que tu esfuerzo sea inútil hasta que vuelvas a intentarlo, así que la mayoría de las veces tendrás que apuntar de todos modos a un ataque cuerpo a cuerpo para asegurarte de que realmente le das en la cabeza.
Mi obstinada estrategia para derrotarlo en la primera partida de X3 fue precisamente esa: Aumentar el daño con el sable Z de Sigma dos veces, e intentar repetidamente (y fallar) golpear con el sable Z a Kaiser Sigma hasta que lo conseguí una vez y acabé con lo que le quedaba de vida con el Buster.

Si lograste vencer a ambas formas de Sigma con muy poca salud restante, entonces te recomendaría usar un Sub-Tanque AHORA si tienes alguno con salud disponible. Porque ahora tendrás que hacer una rápida escalada para escapar de la lava mientras la cabeza alámbrica de Sigma intenta derribarte dentro de ella.
La lava NO es instakill, pero obviamente si te queda poca salud, puede legítimamente darte el dedo medio matándote ahí y teniendo que hacer toda la pelea de nuevo.
Cuando estaba haciendo el experimento del sable Z sin la mejora del buster, una vez morí de esa forma después de sobrevivir a duras penas a Kaiser Sigma 🤠.
Pero bueno, eso es vanilla X3 completado con cada pieza de mejora que puedes tener a la vez.
...Y aunque usé contraseñas para saltarme los ocho mavericks y la búsqueda del tesoro de nuevo para experimentar con esa idea de la mejora sin buster, conseguí pasar del Doppler 1 a la pelea con Sigma y volver a derrotarlo tras 35 minutos.
Lo que me hizo apreciar más todo
...Y también pienso que algunas de las cosas que más me molestan de este juego se podían arreglar o evitar fácilmente. Pero aún así.
Por si no lo conocías, hay un romhack llamado Mega Man X3 Zero Project, que inicialmente empezó como un hack que intentaba hacer de Zero un personaje más jugable en lugar de ser extremadamente situacional, pero a medida que se desarrollaba, aparte de desarrollarlo más [Zero es ahora totalmente jugable prácticamente en cualquier parte, pero sólo tiene un poco más de salud que X en lugar de una barra completa - pero aún así se puede mejorar], también tenía algunos cambios en la calidad de vida que realmente me hicieron ver las cosas de otra manera.
Por supuesto, ya había jugado a Vanilla X3, así que sabía cómo estaban las cosas y no iba a sufrir los mismos problemas de búsqueda del tesoro que antes, pero jugué primero a la versión oficial «peor» para poder opinar... y saber de primera mano hasta qué punto Zero Project había arreglado las cosas.
La mejora de Buster ya no apesta.
Lo primero que probé cuando llegué a ella fue probar el disparo combinado anunciado, que en el juego vainilla resulta que sólo hace tres puntos de daño.
No solo se notaba INSTANTANEAMENTE que era realmente rápido [tan rápido como un disparo normal cargado], sino que además, cuando lo usé con jefes, vi que los orbes de dispersión que normalmente solo funcionaban contra los enemigos, también podían dañar a los jefes.
En otras palabras, los dos mayores defectos que tenía el destructor, la falta de velocidad para ser fiable y la falta de daño para que el precio de la entrada mereciera la pena, se solucionaron.
Incluso la entrada a la cápsula de la armadura corporal se ha cambiado para que NO requiera un disparo de arma cargada, así que incluso si entras a ciegas, puedes conseguirla sin tener que conseguir la Mejora de Pierna + Chip o la Mejora de Buster + Pozo de Gravedad.
Y hablando de las fichas, ahora tenías que conseguir todas las fichas para conseguir la Armadura Dorada -seguías pudiendo tener solo una activa [la última cápsula de fichas que cogías se quedaba activa], pero al menos tenías una razón para recogerlas sin tener que conseguirlo TODO solo por esa gran bonificación. Así que realmente merecía la pena descubrir las cápsulas rojas.
Como ahora tenía un poderoso buster, esta vez no me decanté por el sable Z... y el hecho de saber que tenía el doble salto aéreo y de darme cuenta de que Sigma hacía MUCHO menos daño si tenías el conjunto de mejoras completo [LO CUAL TIENE SENTIDO]... me hizo descubrir cómo luchar contra Sigma con el doble disparo del buster en lugar de ir a por él con la graciosa arma de alto daño.
Kaiser Sigma seguía siendo muy difícil de controlar y seguía causando un daño considerable [aunque ligeramente reducido], pero como ahora el combo de disparos era viable, cierta característica de la Armadura Dorada/Chip Rampante era ahora aún más poderosa.
La Hipercarga.
Como la Hipercarga te permite usar disparos cargados sin cargar siempre que tengas suficiente munición [que se rellena si recibes daño], podía hacer lo que esperaba poder hacer con Sigma en el X3 vainilla cuando entraba por la puerta del jefe con todo en la mano [que como sabéis ahora, NO fue lo que pasó] gracias a la posibilidad de hacer algo tan cursi como usar repetidamente un disparo combo FUERTE a través de ellos.
DESTRUCCIÓN TOTAL Y ABSOLUTA RAHHHHH
Y eso es lo que me hizo ver que X3, a pesar de esos fallos clave, tiene algo que como mucho, no rompe la fórmula habitual de X por lo que es bastante decente, y en el mejor de los casos [que sería con este hack], las ideas PODRÍAN haber sido bastante divertidas en el juego original con los cambios hechos aquí, pero al menos puedes experimentar esa versión ideal ahora aunque sea de forma no oficial. Incluso tenía RetroAchievements disponibles :D
La guinda de todo es que también hace algo que no creo que los juegos X oficiales te dejen hacer nunca: Una opción New Game Plus, lo que significa que puedes volver a jugar todo el juego con TODO LO QUE OBTENGAS.
Así que si pensabas que jugar a X3 con algunas de sus peculiaridades más molestas arregladas era suficiente redención por sus crímenes originales, entonces consíguelo todo en una partida completa y luego obtén REVENGA sobre toda la lista de jefes con tu monstruo completamente blindado.
Conclusión
No quiero dar la impresión de que odio X3, pero mentiría si dijera que sus peculiaridades no me molestaron, sobre todo en esa primera partida a ciegas en la que ODIABA tener que luchar con la mejora de buster contra Sigma o buscar objetos para encontrarme con cápsulas de chips que tenía que ignorar.
Si lo vuelves a jugar, puede tener más sentido, sobre todo si quieres optar por la mejora sin buster, pero no puedo negar que me daba vibraciones de Castlevania Dracula X y Mega Man 1 en ese sentido, aunque no era tan consistentemente molesto como podían ser esos juegos a mitad de camino, ciertamente sentí que, aparte de ser más difícil debido al daño general, la lucha final incluso teniendo todo lo que el juego espera que consigas es una gran molestia, aunque no tan instantáneamente barata como los pozos de instakill de Drácula [CVDX] o tener que rehacer una fase entera con cuatro jefes antes de Wily si perdías todas tus vidas [MM1].
Sé que la mayor parte de esto ha sido sin duda una mención a las manías del juego, ya que en realidad son MUY manías en su mayor parte... pero ignorando a Sigma, el juego es por lo demás bastante jugable, incluso aunque resulte incómodo con esas pocas decisiones de diseño, que se pueden saltar si ya las conoces, lo que no quita que estén ahí y que yo las sufriera en mi primera partida, y es lo que yo diría que es el problema con el que se encuentra la mayoría de la gente al jugar a este juego.
Así que no culparía a nadie si acaba sintiendo la necesidad de echar mano de una guía para encontrar o resolver algunas cosas... que es probablemente lo que me da un poco de dispapointment cuando X1 y X2 se sienten factible para conseguir todo sin una guía [menos las armas de bonificación] - sólo un montón de tiempo y la exploración con un cierto sentido de la jugabilidad de forma libre, mientras que en X3 hay muchas cosas que parecen requerir conocimientos específicos para encontrar sin perder demasiado tiempo [y en el caso de Chips, usted tendría que encontrar las cuatro cápsulas para leer lo que parece el mejor para mantener si usted no recogió la primera que encontró].

- X3 Vanilla: Es bueno si sabes jugarlo, pero si no, necesitarás mucha paciencia para encontrar las cosas en el orden correcto... y si eso no es suficiente, consigue una guía que te ayude.
- Proyecto X3 Zero: Recomendado en general debido a los ajustes clave que facilitan la vida tanto a principiantes como a veteranos. Los ajustes de calidad de vida y equilibrio contribuyen en gran medida a que el juego sea más fluido.
Pero si quieres jugar al MMX3 original por tu cuenta para sacar tus propias conclusiones [dejando a un lado que... realmente acabé explicando casi todas las cosas que son raras de averiguar por ti mismo], entonces adelante - eso es exactamente lo que hice y al menos el tiempo de ejecución cuando conseguí subir de nivel hasta antes de la pelea de Sigma seguía siendo divertido a pesar de todo. Sólo prepárate para una batalla cuesta arriba al final.
