Anyways, Quake III Arena is an interesting game for its time due to a variety of reasons. It was yet another technological leap from iD software with their engines as it could make use of the newest powerful PC hardware for the time in 1999 (and being ported to the Dreamcast and the PS2), and doubled down on the fast-paced gameplay the first two games had...but in a quite unique way. As you might know, even though Quake entries never really acted as sequels between each other in the story or setting, Quake and Quake II were games with single-player campaigns along the bonus of deathmatch multiplayer (with Q2 including mutliplayer exclusive maps)...but Quake III?
You wanted a campaign? Too bad! You only wanted it because you wanted to shoot a rocket at something without any care in the world? Well, here you'll be shooting rockets all day against OTHER players! And if having a multiplayer shooter to blast down friends and strangers alike at the speed of light is what you've been looking for, then this is one of those games made just for that!
This game along with Unreal Tournament were the codifiers of the "arena shooter" genre, focused on high-speed mobility and action with deathmatch and online multiplayer, with the single player modes being relegated to challenges where you have to play against bots instead of campaigns. Most weapons from the previous games were brought back with a new coat of paint, and you always start with a functional but somewhat ineffective Machine Gun, while weapons like Shotguns and Double-Barreled Shotguns, Railguns (which are basically the arena shooter equivalent of a sniper rifle...without a scope), Grenade Launchers, and the always fun to use Rocket Launcher (more so here with how you can rocket jump here, as long as it doesn't make you lose your last bit of reamining health).
To be honest, trying to describe this game is easier said than done, since the basics are pretty straightforward (a multiplayer shooter with crazy weapons where you move quickly), the advanced techniques are something I'm not that familiar with (at best stuff like bunnyhopping and rocket jumps), and as I said, there isn't much else to describe other than there's modes with teams. However, its when you get your hands on the game where you start to catch on the essence of Quake III: You better be ready to aim and fire quickly at anyone that comes by, preferrably with weapons that cause big explosions (or if your aim is THAT steady, rail 'em in the head), but don't be caught standing on a place for too long either.
While this game was pretty much considered legendary at its time, it definitely has been relegated in history to one of those games that are only in the sight of "boomer shooter" fans like me (along with stuff like, say, the original Doom games, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem 3D) as while the game does actually work great and still can be played online along with finding some few servers populated with people, it is undeniable that arena shooters have fallen off the face of earth as the "team shooters" have taken their place.
However, there's still something great about how honest the insanity of this game can be, and it can be a great blast if you can find a server with players or simply get some buddies to play it with you. While it is quite the opposite from the classic Halo games (slow but easy to grasp controls with some big maps), I'd say that it can be just as fun as those with friends if you can get them to play, specially if they can catch up with your pace while playing. There's even a source port of Quake III that allows for splitscreen in PC, which is pretty cool!
And of course, just as the cherry on top of the classic iD Software games, the source code was released many years ago just like with their previous games (most notably Doom, which is why you've seen it run on EVERYTHING) which is why stuff like ioquake3 (the best engine to use to play this game nowadays) and Spearmint (the splitscreen-supported engine) exist, and aside from that, iD's engine was once again put to use in other commercial games.
Doom's engine powered some few other FPS games like Heretic, Hexen and (amusingly enough) Chex Quest. Quake's engine was heavily modified and used for Half-Life, while Quake II's engine was used for Soldier of Fortune and the infamous Daikatana. And Quake III's engine was used for 007's Agent Under Fire, American McGee's Alice, and most notably, was modified to be used for the very first Call of Duty. So to say that iD Software's engines made for their games were used as the springboard to make more historically important franchises is an understatment (even if ironically, Call of Duty as a franchise would be another reason for the downfall of arena shooters).
It is always interesting to know how these games not only marked a before and an after in FPS history with their technology along with their design allowing them to be mostly timeless and highly moddable, but that their engines also were used to catapult even bigger things into the game industry today. So...yeah, don't forget to thank your old grandpa Quake III for every dose of Call of Duty you've got up to this day 😎
