Remember when I played Super Bomberman in Co-op with my nephew months ago?
Well, whether you do or you don't, I'll let you know that I hadn't gone back to this game since that July except once but only to see if there was another world beyond that little Battle simulator...and there was.
Until today.
My nephew showed up again as my cousin (who I see as an uncle because he's way older than me) needed some routers to be configured again at my home, and when that was done, the boy asked to play something...recalling a game about "mushrooms" and that was called Super something...
Sure enough, when I realized what that was, and booted it up, he recognized it. He was ready to play Super Bomberman again. Even my cousin knew what Bomberman was and knew it was good.
As I recorded that last playthrough and had the password at hand to the last moment where we played, we could restart back to where we left off: The "Battle simulator" against waves of computer enemies that are like players.
Only that since we were loading off a fresh password...we were back at zero fire powerups. So it took us a handful of tries to get to the checkpoint against the gold bombers, but between some patience, me getting one fire powerup and one only, and using the classic bomb-mashing trick with invulnerability to roast any enemies near me as they take a few hits, we were able to get through it.
And now we were on World 6, the final world of the game.
...To be honest, the first three stages have not much to write home about, as they do have a variety of enemies that we've seen before and we only died once through that road ahead.
But Stage 6-4?
A mighty knight problem
This stage looked simple but was a clear time sink: Those two HUGE knight enemies could tank many hits, almost as if they were bosses, and on top of that you had to make sure that the explosions didn't hit them face on or else they would just block with the shield.
I actually got a Game Over once when fighting one of the knights after a good while taking out the other one because I ran out of time in my last life.
Got to mention that in that one, we had already taken one and was close to taking down the other, but my nephew accidentally exploded the goal...so another one spawned. And then I ran out of time trying to destroy the new one.
You can cheese them in a pattern if you get them to run straight for you and place the bomb in the right time so that it explodes soon after they touch the bomb, turn around and leave their backs exposed, but even with that, it still takes a fair bit to take down one of them- let alone two.
After several attempts, we had one run where one of the knights spawned inside a corner with soft blocks, so it was trapped until we decided to free it. Though at the cost of my nephew running into one of my bombs in his last life, I managed to get rid of one knight...but I was running out of time, and I would die to that without any lives left.
But I got lucky that an extra life spawned from the knight I killed and I could get it right before I died. So now that I respawned and with no more lives left, I did a last ditch effot with the respawn invuln and mashed the bomb trick immediately as soon as I freed him then got behind him to make as much damage as possible before I died.
The knight died.
BUT BECAUSE THE INVULNERABILITY WORE OFF, I ALSO DIED.
BUT DESTROYING THE KNIGHT GAVE ME ENOUGH TO GET 5000 POINTS FOR AN EXTRA LIFE, REVIVE AND FINISH THE STAGE.
The excited disbelief as we realized what had just happened was really something- by a miracle of the scoring system rewarding my final strategy to take it down, we completed the level.
Road to the final battle
The next levels had some familiar annoying faces, such as the blue Pac-Man like thing that eats bombs, so you have to place them from a distance that explodes their face before they touch it, and those coins with faces that move quickly even through walls that I often decided to deal with with that trick with the invulnerability and bombs.
Stage 6-7 has some of those bomb enemies, these fat guys that take two hits to destroy, and the aforementioned coins, and while it can be relatively quick to clear this stage with the invlun trick and some ingenuity or power-ups on deck, you'll have to be prepared to do this one again if you die in what comes next:
Stage 6-8: The final boss.
A giant robotic spider that spits bombs from the top with max power and only can be harmed when it exposes its eye, you can get some hits up-close with the invuln trick, but once that's out of the question, it will depend of your amount of lives and power-ups on how easy it will be to deal with.
For example, if you don't have any fire power-ups, then you'll have to rely on having to stay close to the boss but not bump into it to wait for those openings to attack. And the invlun trick whenever you can.
If you have a detonator and max firepower though, then you can maintain a distance and detonate explosions at its face at will. That's how I was attacking it in the second attempt of it as I got lucky to find both of those before...but I lost it mid-fight, so I had to go back to the old bomb spam after respawning and then relying on my bombs with only one extra square of range.
With zero spare lives remaining, I managed to land the last hit on the boss, feeling a huge relief to see it suddenly start exploding. And then phase two kicks in.
You cannot hit it with explosions, as it is the two villains floating, though likely still able to kill you on contact, but they throw items on the arena during that. They will almost always be chucking skull items...but if you don't have one, then they'll also ocasionally drop a Punch Glove power-up that will be necessary to punch the bombs into their face and damage them.
And get this: My nephew had to go in 10 minutes when we were reaching the last boss, so in that moment it was the last chance for both of us to see the ending- if I choked then he would have to go and I would either have to keep playing alone or give it up then and there.
But right as it was time for him to go, I beat the boss's second phase, and with the extra points I got from that, my nephew could respawn to show up on the ending cutscene.
In the last moment possible, Super Bomberman was completed.
And this is the kind of stuff that you can't make up or imagine until it happens. Really enjoyable to have got clutch moments and even see clutch moments from him, then get the ending at the very last second left.

Below is the recording of the full session, from the few struggles with the last section of the previous world to the hurdles we had to jump for the knight and the final boss.
I would like to edit some of those moments into a shorter video since there's some highlights here and there, either from cool moments and narrow clutch victories, to silly mistakes from not only my nephew, but also really silly mistakes from the older guy here that put the game in the first place and telling you this tale.
But at the moment, for a simple but fun co-op session after a good while, it was definitely worth the time, and I'm glad that my nephew also had that much fun with it as well.

Como grabé esa última partida y tenía a mano la contraseña del último momento en el que jugamos, podíamos volver a empezar donde lo habíamos dejado: El "Simulador de batalla" contra oleadas de enemigos que son como jugadores.

Tengo que mencionar que en esa, ya habíamos eliminado a uno y estábamos a punto de eliminar al otro, pero mi sobrino explotó la meta accidentalmente...así que apareció otro. Y entonces me quedé sin tiempo intentando destruir al nuevo.
Si consigues que corran en línea recta hacia ti y colocas la bomba en el momento adecuado para que explote poco después de que toquen la bomba, te das la vuelta y les dejas la espalda al descubierto, puedes acabar con ellos siguiendo un patrón, pero incluso así, sigue costando bastante acabar con uno de ellos, por no hablar de dos.

Por ejemplo, si no tienes potenciadores de fuego, tendrás que confiar en tener que permanecer cerca del jefe pero sin chocar con él para esperar esas aperturas para atacar. Y el truco de invlun siempre que puedas.
Sin embargo, si tienes un detonador y la máxima potencia de fuego, podrás mantener la distancia y detonar explosiones en su cara a voluntad. Así es como lo estaba atacando en el segundo intento, ya que tuve suerte de encontrar ambos antes... pero lo perdí a mitad de combate, así que tuve que volver al viejo spam de bombas tras reaparecer y confiar en mis bombas con sólo una casilla extra de alcance.
