Hearing about this game being recently added to the Nintendo Switch Online service gave me a flashback of when I started playing this game at least seven or more years ago on a friend's Wii - one of those days where I was staying at his home and decided to throw the game in there with a SNES emulator to see what it was about.
I think that the only caveat of playing this official version [if you can]...is that for some unexplainable reason, the game is STILL completely in Japanese.
Being a little puzzle game exclusive to Japan in its heyday, it is perfectly playable if you look up how to navigate the menus, as obviously, a puzzle game with a simple premise doesn't necessarily need a translation...but it's still weird that the game was offered with the menus in Japanese even in the international NSO services.
But oh well, at least it is a nice thing to see the game released worldwide officially after the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console releases were Japan-only. For the sake of convenience though, I'll be playing with an unofficial English translation patch on a SNES emulator.
So...yeah, that's a lot of starting context for this little game - but the NSO re-release is definitely the reason why I was reminded of it again. Good thing too, because it is a pretty ingenious game to play through as you'll see soon enough.
Colors and blocks get you to the goal
You play as this crystal-clear thing that can suck up blocks and colors out of jars [or even blocks that are already colored], then place them back.
So in a nutshell, you pick up and place blocks, as well as colors out of blocks and put them into anything - which let you give that thing the properties of that color. Although note that you can jump through blocks regardless of their property [although only from below], something you'll have to take advantage of in some levels
For example, picking up the color red and inserting it into an empty block will make it rise up and down. Doing the same but with blue will make it move side to side, and yellow will make it move diagonally.
If you hold the button you use to place a block when doing so, you can slightly lift a block mid-air to act as a higher platform you can still jump to. Very handy if there's a platform you need just a bit more of height to reach with a jump.
This is something that's explained in one of the included tutorial stages...but I mention here for you since there's a stage that expects you to know that [and I was stuck in it for minutes until I went looking into the tutorials and found the one that explained it].
Essentially, you have to play around with picking and placing blocks to reach the rainbow crystals, as well as give them those colored properties to navigate through the stage [although if you have a color absorbed that you don't need, you can press down to drop it]. It makes more sense when you put your hands into the game, naturally.
Another detail that you'll have handy is that, say, if you take out the red color out of a block while it's already high mid-air then put it back, it will start rising again from where it was left at.
So...you can make blocks rise even higher with that trick - if the stage wants you to do that.
The premise sounds simple, and that's because the difficulty will come from how later levels will force you to think around these gimmicks to reach what seems like an unreachable goal.
A preview of more gimmicks to come
Some stages may give you a jar to color blocks with as much as you want, others may only give you colored blocks that will limit your usage of it...and there are a few that don't even have colored blocks or jars - forcing you to figure out a solution with just bricks.
But of course, the game will introduce a few more things as you go on, such as these switches that will swap the jar colors so that you can get a more useful effect on a block nearby.
Another example are these dog-like things called Makkun, which are always solid and fall with gravity if dropped mid-air [even falling through transparent blocks], and can have different properties when colored.
Yellow Makkun will stomp on the floor [which is what the one here is doing - flipping the switch automatically], Blue Makkun will move side to side...and I'll leave it to you to guess what Red Makkun do.
There are also a few more oddballs like this rock with a face that will lower your jump height when absorbed [but it serves a purpose in the stage it's introduced...hey, figure that out yourself too], and these fake jar/blocks with eyes that will run away from you when poked.
What else can I mention without spoiling the game?
This game being a puzzle platformer is the reason why I don't really put anything beyond some of the earlier stages into detail here, since of course, the twist of this being a puzzle game is to figure out the solution to some of the seemingly weird situations the game throws at you and then feel like a genius when you do.
What I can mention is that the game is pretty neat presentation wise for a Super Nintendo game - feels like a game that could have been done by the same team behind the Kirby games, even if not as colorful as detailed, but still a whimsy vibe. Some of the stage songs are pretty upbeat as well.
Another aspect of the game that's neat is the point system: Instead of being timed into your final score, what deducts from your points is how many inputs you do in a stage.
So moving left or right [even if into a wall] deducts points, picking up and placing blocks or colors deducts points, jumping deducts points...Even using the quick save feature in the pause menu will deduct you some points too - although the quick load feature will always return you to the amount of points you had when you saved.
Quick Save/Load in this stage is essentially an integrated savestate feature, so even if you're playing this while refusing to use emulator savestates, the game does offer you that as a legitimate thing that can spare you setting up again a lot of stuff you've already figured out of the level before experimenting further.
But going back to the points, you basically aim for high scores by saving on inputs and actions as much as possible - which is an interesting focus on scoring a puzzle game compared to just [do it fast], although I could see how this game could be cool to speedrun for someone that already knows how to tackle every stage.
Oh, and the game also includes a hint option in the pause menu - although if you use them, there will be an increasing [for each time you use one], permanent penalty to your score in every stage stuck to your save file the more hints you use...
But hey, having hints at all in this game [which if I recall, are shown in-game instead of text, so should be understandable even in the untranslated version] seems more generous than other puzzle games, even if it does kick your score down a notch for it.
Conclusion
A little game that was initially stuck as a Satellaview release in Japan but eventually got re-released not too long after as a standalone Super Nintendo cartridge, it's crazy that this game was never re-released outside of Japan until now because of how easy an international re-release [at least digitally] it always could have been as a puzzle game.
It even was virtually finished too for the Game Boy yet never saw the day of light until a big Nintendo leak had the game resurface - and that too would have made a lot of sense to release AT ALL for the little handheld when the game was simplified to fit [even having a time system for stages instead of the point system], while being a no-brainer of a game [a puzzler] to stick to the Game Boy.
But oh well, at least now it is more likely to be discovered by people in general as it is officially available on Nintendo Switch Online - a long overdue but welcome return of this little game.
And if you are curious to watch me play the game for almost an hour [for some reason], even if you were to be spoiled by the fact I play through 30 levels [although the game has WAY more than that], then you can do so here - but I haven't timestamped it yet...so just make sure to skip ahead when you get to Stage 1-8 until the moment where I actually read the tutorial and figure out lifting blocks lmao
Yeah, that's all for now. It is nice to go back to this game after so long, more so when it's a different kind of engaging than the usual bunch of racing that I've done over the recent posts [again, I had said that I wanted to try something different - and yet I ended up talking about Super Mario Kart again instead 😅].

Siendo un pequeño juego de puzle exclusivo de Japón en su época, se puede jugar perfectamente si investigas como navegar los menús, ya que obviamente, un juego de puzle con una premisa simple no necesariamente necesita una traducción...pero aún es extraño que el juego sea ofrecido con los menús en japonés aún en la versión internacional de NSO.
Pero bueno, al menos es bonito ver que fue relanzado oficialmente después de ser exclusivo de Japón en los relanzamientos de la Consola Virtual de Wii y Wii U. Por motivos de conveniencia, jugaré con un parche de traducción al inglés en un emulador de SNES.
Así que...si, bastante contexto inicial para este juego - pero el relanzamiento de NSO sí que es la razón por la cual recordé este juego de nuevo. Y que bien, porque es bastante ingenioso de jugar cuando te pones en ello como lo verán aquí.
Llega a la meta con bloques y colores
Juegas como esta cosa de cristal que puede succionar bloques y colores de las jarras [o hasta bloques que ya tienen un color] y colocarlas de vuelta.
En resumen, quitas y colocas bloques, además de que quitas bloques de colores y los pones en cualquier cosa - lo cual le da las propiedades de ese color. Aunque puedes saltar a través de bloques sin importar la propiedad [pero solo por debajo], algo que tendrás que hacer en algunso niveles.
Por ejemplo, tomas el color rojo y lo pones en un bloque vacío para hacer que suba arriba y abajo. El color azul hará que se mueva de lado a lado, y el color amarillo lo hará moverse diagonalmente.
Si mantienes presionado el botón con el que colocas un bloque mientras lo haces, puedes levantarlo un poco en el aire para que sea una plataforma más alta en la que puedes saltar. Muy útil si necesitas esa altura extra para llegar a alguna parte con un salto.
Eso lo explica un nivel de tutorial...pero lo menciono ya que hay un nivel que espera que ya sepas eso [y me quedé trabado ahí por minutos hasta que los revisé y encontré el que lo explicaba].
Esencialmente, debes jugar con colocar bloques para llegar a los cristales arcoiris, así como darles esas propiedades con los colores para navegar el nivel [aunque si tienes un color que no necesitas, presiona abajo y lo soltarás]. Naturalmente, todo esto tiene más sentido cuando lo juegas por tu cuenta.
Tro detalle útil es que, digamos, si le quitas el rojo de un bloque mientras está en el aire y se lo devuelves, empezará a subir de nuevo desde donde quedó.
Así que puedes hacer un bloque subir y subir con ese truco - si el nivel quiere que hagas eso.
La premisa suena simple, y eso es porque la dificultad viene de como los niveles posteriores te harán pensar sobre estos trucos para llegar a una meta aparentemente inalcanzable.
Un vistazo a más cositas por ver
Algunos niveles quizás te den una jarra para colorear bloques como se te antoje, otros solo te darán bloques con colores limitándote el uso que tienes de ellos...y hay algunos que ni te dan colores - obligándote a arreglártelas con solo bloques.
Pero por supuesto, el juego introduce algunas cosas más mientras avanzas, como estos switches que cambian los colores de las jarras para tener un efecto mas conveniente en un bloque cercano.
Otro ejemplo son estas cosas que parecen perros llamados Makkun, los cuales siempre son sólido y caen con gravedad si los sueltas en el aire [hasta caen a través de bloques vacíos], y pueden tener diferentes propiedades según el color que les des.
Los Makkun amarillos pisarán el piso [lo cual es lo que hace el de aquí - presionando el switch automaticamente], los azules se moveran de lado a lado...y te dejaré a tí adivinar que hace el rojo.
Hay otras cosas ma´s como esta piedra con cara que te bajará la altura de tu salto cuando lo absorbes [pero tiene un propósito en el nivel que es introducido...hey, descúbrelo tu mismo], y estas jarras o bloques falso con ojos que corren cuando los intentas pinchar.
¿Qué mas decir sin spoilear el juego?
Ya que es un plataformero estilo puzle, ese es el motivo por el cual no puse mucho en detalle de los niveles aquí fuera de los primeros, ya que por supuesto, el giro de este juego es que descubras las soluciones a las situaciones extrañas que te tira el juego y te sientas como un genio cuando lo hagas.
Lo que puedo decir es que tiene una presentación bonita para un juego de Super Nintendo - parece algo que podría ser hecho por los que hicieron los Kirby, aunque no es tan detallado y colorido como esos, pero sigue teniendo carisma. Algunas de las canciones también son bastante alegres.
Otro aspecto interesante del juego es el sistema de puntos: En vez de ser medido por tiempo, lo que te quita puntos es los botones que presionas en un nivel.
Moverte a los lados [aún en una pared] quita puntos, recoger y poner bloques o colores quita puntos, saltar quita puntos...hasta usar el guardado rápido del menú de pausa quita puntos - aunque el cargado rápido te regresará en puntos a como los tenías cuando guardaste.
El cargado y guardado rápido del juego es esencialmente savestates integrados, así que aún si juegas esto mientras te niegas a usar los savestates del emulador, el juego te ofrece esto como una opción legítima para ahorrarte tiempo de montar cosas en un nivel que ya descifraste antes de empezar a experimentar.
Volviendo a los puntos, buscas hacer puntuaciones record al ahorrarte presionar botones y acciones lo más que puedes - algo interesante para un juego de puzle comparado al esperado [hazlo rápido], aunque igual veo como podría ser divertido speedrunear esto para alguien que se sabe todos los niveles.
Ah, y el juego incluye una opción para pistas en el menú de pausa - aunque cada vez que los uses, se añadirá una penalización permanente a tus puntos en cada nivel que se quedará en tu partida guardada mientras más los uses.
Pero hey, tener pistas en un juego como esta [que si recuerdo bien, se muestran en el propio juego en vez de texto, así que deberían ser útiles aun en la versión sin traducción] es más generoso que muchos otros juegos de puzle, aún si te quita puntos por ello.
Conclusión
Un pequeño juego inicialmente atrapado en la Satellaview en Japón pero eventualmente resurgió no mucho después como un juego de Super Nintendo estándar, es una locura que nunca relanzaron este juego fuera de Japón hasta ahora ya que un relanzamiento internacional [al menos digitalmente] sería facilísimo al ser un juego de puzle.
Hasta estaba terminado para salir en la Game Boy y aun así no salió hasta que se filtró en un leak de Nintendo - y ese juego habría tenido todo el sentido de EXISTIR para la pequeña portátil cuando el juego fue simplificado para ello [hasta usando el tiempo como medidor de destreza en vez del sistema de puntos], así como ser un juego que tenía sentido de estar en la Game Boy [juego de puzle].
Pero al menos ahora será más descubierto por gente en general por Nintendo Switch Online - bastante tardado pero igual bienvenido el regreso de este juego.
Y si tienes curiosidad de verme jugar esto por casi una hora [por alguna razón], aún si te fueras a spoilear de 30 niveles que jugué [aunque hay muchos más], puedes hacerlo aquí - aunque no les he puesto timestamps...así que asegurate de saltar adelante cuando llegue al nivel 1-8 hasta la parte donde leo el tutorial y aprendo de levantar bloques jajajaj
