I know that this is not exactly the most groundbreaking feature today with how obviously not only any computer, but also any smartphone and even a handful of late 2000s "dumb" phones before the rise of Android allowed for music file playback.
...But have you ever got a game console that allowed you to do that too, no ifs or buts?
For the times where multimedia for the masses was on the rise and yet the massively adopted official avenues for music as streaming platforms (iTunes, Spotify, SoundCloud, even Youtube Music technically counts) of today didn't exist yet, it seemed very natural that some console designers would want to get creative and offer this little feature to consumers.
That is a logical, descriptive explanation of why these existed, but I'm here more than anything to tell you how that resulted in little old me spending hours listening to music before I had a smartphone walking around the backyard because the PSP and 3DS let you casually save and playback music like a feature of the console.
Before that though, I have to go to my first experience with that, which might not have been the oldest to implement a music player feature...but I distinctly remember as my first exposure to a console that allowed you to playback songs from an USB drive instead of a CD.
Or more specifically, it included music files.
Xbox 360 pack-in music for the win
Yeah, imagine getting an Xbox 360 and that it included 10 songs for you to listen with its integrated music player and trippy visualizer.
That's how Skindred's Pressure got embedded in my memories, as well as jumping around so much to Tsar - Band Girls Money before I played Burnout Legends for the first time.
In retrospective, this was clearly done to showcase that multimedia feature as the console advertised itself as a multimedia machine on top of games (kinda like the PS2, but it allowed for more than DVDs), and the feature itself was carried over from the original Xbox, but it's still cool they bothered into getting those songs, most featured in other games at the time, available as a bonus for your purchase.
There's footage of the Xbox 360's music visualizer...but since its REALLY trippy, I'll have to put in big letters:

Something I hadn't known until now yet makes so much sense is that the responsible for the X360 original visualizer is none other than Jeff Minter, responsible not only of the original Tempest 2000 and its even more visually trippy successors/sequels, but also for having done similarly exaggerated visualizers for the Atari Jaguar CD and the NUON- also consoles that happened to feature T2K variants from Jeff.

...And before we move to the DSi, there's a particular case I want to highlight...no I will gi to dsi first
Good old flashbacks with the Nintendo DSi.
Have you ever heard of .AAC files?
Knees turning into dust? Yeah, me too, I'm turning 22 next month and yet I was feeling worn out from a single Just Dance attempt-wait I'm going off topic.
The DSi only supported .m4a/.3gp/.mp4 files, which I distinctly remember not only because of having to download the few songs I loaded in there in that format, but also rediscovering a single DSi-format song in my Dsi SD card, the only thing I somehow kept from it as I lost the console itself, was a very low quality Sonic X opening theme and a Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2 song I heard through an old Game Maker game.
If you want to get a feel of how old this makes me feel and the whole process of doing that conversion for your DSi, you can take a look at this equally old 2009 guide on how you could do that.
There's a video out there by Akfamilyhome that also happens to go more in-depth with the Nintendo DSi Sound application as a whole as well as the Camera app and the equivalents of these in the 3DS which I'd definitely recommend since it does go in-depth on the extra fun bells and whistles I absolutely used to play with in both consoles. And also mentions that the Wii also supported these music files, except that I NEVER had known that since I wouldn't have imagined that the Photo Channel also doubled as a music player.
My Nintendo DS flashcard is also a music player?

The R4 flashcarts not only were a huge thing for DS owners without much budget (Almost everyone I knew that had a DS growing up only had these- which stuck out to me when I was lucky to have a handful of original games...and I still wanted/got one) to load your DS with games (you know how), but also had that extra support for playing MP3 files in a console that didn't have any internal memory.
That's because since the flashcart uses a microSD where you'd load the games, you could also put music files in there and use the integrated media player you choose when you boot it up. But there's also dedicated homebrew apps you could download to your flashcart for music playback instead of using whatever was integrated, and these are even compatible with TWLightMenu++ for the DSi, which is what hacked DSi consoles can now use to load DS games from the SD Card.
...I honestly don't have a solid memory of what music I used to pack in there though, but there likely was some overlap with my PSP songs.
Before heading there, I want to briefly mention the WiiMC homebrew app, as while I never really used it for that, it is the way I originally thought you would be able to listen music and play back videos on the console.
The PSP is a mean media machine
Another portable with music story, but this time the best one so far. 320kbps music support and integrated directly into the console, this is the one I used so much to play music when I was bored. If I had a PSP charger to charge my console's battery, I would be taking a photo of whatever I had there [the cover picture is from that time when I talked about my experience with it around two years ago], if I hadn't already removed those to make space for games as I was limited to a 2GB Memory Stick.
Speaking of music on your PSP and games, there's also a homebrew plugin that allowed you to play back music during games, something that the console actually didn't let you do by default unlike the Xbox 360 since it didn't have a system menu for that while playing- except for the little menu to close the game when you pressed the PS button. But since CFW/LCFW consoles always had access to a special menu through a button combo where you could enable certain plugins and was active at all times...that is what you could use to enable this plugin and start playing songs with a specific button press regardless of where you are.
That is how I ended up playing Wipeout Pulse sometimes with FIFA Street 2's soundtrack since some of those DnB songs in there as well as EZ Rollers's album Titles of the Unexpected really matched well with the high-speed futuristic driving of the game.
But there also was the homebrew MODo player, designed to playback module/tracker music tracks instead of standard music, although it supported those too. And if you aren't aware of what that is, it describes songs that only contain the samples and music patterns for a music file that's very small in size but versatile to playback, often associated with chiptunes.
Just an old fellow's ramblings?
Some of you are reading this on a mobile phone, which can do that and so much more for media playback without breaking a sweat, and that obviously makes the idea of music players on portable consoles sound outdated.
But I can't tell you how much hours I had spent listening to songs like:
- Rhythm and Balance from Sonic Adventure 2
- What I'm Made of from Sonic Heroes
- Let Mom Sleep from Jet Set Radio
- Concept of Love, Fly like a Butterfly and Funky Dealer from Jet Set Radio Future
- That one Greenwich in the Sky remix from Touhou that also used to be known countless Pivot parodies
- A guitar cover of Corneria of Star Fox from 2010
- The legendary Megaman X5 X vs Zero remix from BREIS
- Listening to this early clean rip of Sonic Mania's Chemical Plant 2 BEFORE the game and soundtrack released
- JVC-H's remix of Heads will Roll, which I found out from the 2016 Dance till your Dead meme with the dancing dog
- Scatman John's most iconic song online [Super Mario 64 parodies, anyone?]
And so much more stuff on my 3DS, as I could easily stuff its SD Card with music through my laptop's SD Card reader compared to having to use the transfer cable for the PSP for years before hacking the 3DS without Cubic Ninja was possible and ended up freeing that limited space for more games instead. You can have an idea of for how long with some of the songs mentioned, which should tell you exactly for how long I loved playing music on my 3DS.
That is why I, while being offline for an entire morning, had looked back on this feature and wrote the majority of it on my phone.
Let me tell you, the style of the UI for all of the music players in these consoles is what added so much more to the fun of scrolling and playing back my favorite tunes.
