As a Gamer for years I was told that games do nothing it it nothing productive to us however I'm here to write my experiences and how Gaming can change one's mind.
Gaming has been a revolutionary evolution to entertainment and moreover gaming should be seen as what it is...
Gaming is basically interactive media with systems added to it, in essence it is a game theory interactive media such in modern times if using the available technology as a means to enhance the experience.

Video Games are typically associated with children wasting their time on a virtual game forever they are more than that and hold the potential to be something great.
Now of course there are also "games" which are designed for different purposes and therefore it would be too much of a generalization to label all games something specific.
There are indeed some games which may waste our time however those games are easy to spot and even in those games we can find some value.

It is important to understand that anything that we are attracted to has value or some value in our lives, the mind will be gravitated towards what benefits it in some way.
Also as the saying goes "time enjoyed wasting is not wasted time".
Games hold value cognitively as well, more specifically they can act as a way by which our mind is shaped and re-shaped.
There are also different types of games and let us not forget that games are also a kind of simulation, the purpose of a simulation is to prepare us or train us in relation to a situation as well as to help us earn new skills or hone skills we already have.

Games as such are very important in such context, not to mention they offer a wide variety of genres and types, from economic games to adventure and exploration, all of them have a cognitive value.
For instance, I had an issue with being able to enjoy and explore in the past, with open-world exploration video games such as Zelda breath of the Wild, Skyrim and so on I started to repair that part of me and bring it more in line to something that I really would be benefited from.
Indeed such games helped me enjoy the moment more and being able to engage in exploration more.
Sometimes reward stimulation is necessary for people, for example I know someone who had adhd and did not feel like doing much because they did not feel rewarded but after playing Path of Exile they kickstarted the process of feeling rewarded for completing goals.
There are plenty of examples, another example is economics and believe it or not... games such as World of Warcraft or similar games have helped hone and develop trading skills which transferred to real life trading skills.
Really the sky is the limit, in my opinion we can even design games dedicated to healing specific cognitive aspects, in fact, we have used games for that.

3D Games have helped people develop a more advanced special reasoning which is also used by the fold.it team for discovering combinations of most efficient protein folding (something we may talk about in a future post).
There is not denying that video games and gamers have brought value to our society one way or another,
of course gaming has a dark side such as with many things.
Video Games have come a long way and from what I experienced so far three are here to stay and to offer what the players need or demand. We are to not forget that we pay l vote with our wallets and with our attention.
That being said there are companies which exploit cognitive functions in order to profit off of people, gamification systems are used by social media as well so we all know where this is going.
Despite all that, gaming's dark side stretches further than simply dopamine triggers, something worth mentioning in another post of course in its own quantity and time.

Briefly, games may act as a potential copping mechanism, also the frequent dopamine triggering may cause exhaustion (not sure if that's up to date information though so please check for yourself too to cross the information) which means we may feel less enjoyment from the small things in our lives, someone who does not enjoy themselves and plays video games does not necessarily mean that video games cause that, it could also be the other way around, what does that mean? Well... if we do not enjoy our every day life it is only normal that we will seek that enjoyment in the next big thing... and thats often video games, in my opinion video games are one of the most healthy copping mechanisms because they also contribute in our development cognitively (we are trained in a simulation) however it depends on the game and I would probably have to look more into recent research to say anything more.

Deep Ideas now about this, let me describe something interesting, Video games can be used to store and retrieve mental information, what do I mean?
Remember that post I made a while ago? [The Palace of Memories], it is related to that concept.
Briefly, we can use the virtual world to store and retrieve information, something I would have to cover in depth in another post too but to give you an idea, we can associate information and attach it to specific spaces (which is probably why we forget why we went to a specific room in the first place and then return to the previous one to remember why).
Again, games are about spacial reasoning often which can be an interesting tool in our arsenal, so lets keep that in mind, it can be useful!
I do not want to tire you so thats it for now! I hope to see you soon onto the next post, thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!
