This story was incredible. Btw guys it's actually inspired in part by a folktale from Dia de los Muertos. One of the major characters in this story is Huitzilin. This is an Aztec name meaning hummingbird. In the story Huitzilin was in love with a girl named Xochitl. But one day he needed to go to war and ended up dying. Xochitl mourned his loss so much that the sun god Tonatiuh turned her into a flower which attracts hummingbirds. That way they'd be reunited.
In the story miHoYo came up with Citlali plays the role of Xochitl. In a way. Their Huitzilin was a kid who challenged Citlali to try and prove herself. She lost. A ton of times. But she kept coming back because she'd become close to Citlali and over time Citlali returned her affection. However Citlali is practically immortal so eventually Huitzilin grew old and died. Citlali withdrew from the world even more after that and Huitzilin knew that that would happen. Throughout her life she trained students in the abilities she learned but set it up so that their final test was to beat Citlali. Her purpose for it was that somebody could repeat what she'd done to engratiate herself to Citlali so her friend would never have to be alone. Of course she was an oddball who liked Citlali more each time she lost. Normal people end up feeling differently about the person that beats them to a pulp. Instead of getting close to Citlali all of her students became bitter about losing to her so they created a narrative about her being a wicked person that enjoys causing suffering. And since Citlali had already withdrawn from the world she indulged in it.
Basically the way miHoYo played it Huitzilin was the one to send all those hummingbirds to Xochitl to comfort her but they instead pecked at her until she resolved to cut everyone out of her life. Maybe Huitzilin should have explained the purpose of challenging Citlali to her students; that might have cleared things up.
But anyway this misunderstanding paved the way for the story and Citlali returning to the world by making a new friend and one who can match her longevity. So I hope you guys enjoy this one!
