Some games focus on the art style, like Blasphemous, others focus on gameplay like Dead Cells, but Hyper Light Drifter of the studio Heart Machine focus on a feeling, and in this focus, it archives something I have rarely seen before, the act of getting you to sync into that feeling, to the point that the whole game is built around the idea of making you feel the game.
The way it archives it is fantastic, and it is solely thought of its artwork, aesthetic, and music, and I know, It is hard to blog about music without being able to play it to you guys, but believe me, the soundtrack of this game is different, in my eyes it's special, it makes the game feel alive, like it is some kind of hearth beating and pushing vibe thought the veins so join me on this trip to feel the Drifter.

From the moment the game starts we got two things, a silent protagonist and a tale told by visuals and sounds stuck together with good gameplay, there is no text, no lore, only the feelings those images and sounds can communicate to us, and this in itself is something I have seen before, a few decades ago, on the SNES.
The game minimalist approach is made as an imitation of times past, as it slowly builds and shows us how far can a game go with no support on any established exposition, no info dump, nothing to enable the player to engage emotionally with the Drifter, unlike many games in modern day and time.
This feeling is something hard to shake off, once you get into it, and start vibing with it. This happens because you sink yourself into the world of the Drifter and this feeling of struggle, one that faces a fight against the unavoidable, a fight against the death, and by the time you see the titans in the intro cinematic, you could see why I say that.

The "titans" as I choose to call them, are one of the main focuses of this story as they are the driving force of destruction in this game narrative, they were the evil creations that ravaged all civilizations of the game world, and they are closely related to the disease that is affecting the drifters and our main character.
This relation is set by the pink-like energy and colors they have, and this is easy to figure out as the only couple things that also possess that pink glow it is our main character's blood, and the final boss and constant haunting of the "Judgement".
Judgment would also stand out as a villain in a way that I have never seen before, by the use of presence, he is just there, slowly but surely representing the impending death of the drifter, and how it's surrounding him and us, all the time, just waiting for the ripening. This is a somewhat obvious insert of the main programmer's congenital heart condition, as the drifter is always shown to hold his chest when he is having a vision, this is something that I figured out after playing the game and searching a bit about the studio name, as it is listed as the main reason for it to be called Heart machine.

Something that made me wonder about this game was the conversations on it, as we only get images that represent the history and no actual words, and it is hard not to wonder how the game still managed for us to understand its narrative.
To my surprise, Hyper Light Drifter manages to transmit its narrative properly and with a minimalist style, as it only takes one to three images and a sound effect to transmit what it means to us, achieving a kind of exposition that is not the one we are used to.
These stories are either legends that the characters are telling us as it happens with the elder lizard or the librarian, or warnings about enemy bosses, like it happens with the guardian or the bladed drifter, and these stories can show us the kind of world this game has.
Most players remember one that is different even if it doesn't support the plot at all, the story of the drunk in the main city, as it is the first three images we ever get to see in the main plot, yet it shows a lot about this world and how treacherous it can be, something we later discover thought the story of the game.

I have delved a lot into surrounding details, but, what about music? Sure it was present in all of those moments in telling you about, but I'm not making a big focusing on it, yet, now it is time for us to dive into it as it is the biggest thing this game has in its favor, the incredible use of its reactive soundtrack placement as a tool for making us feel.
A clear-cut example of how different the soundtrack of Hyper Light Drifter is would be on how different it is from the "source genre" when we look at the genre of metroidvanias and action RPGs, we could easily see how more often than not they possess a high speed and action filled soundtrack like on most of Castlevania titles, at most they would change into a slow-paced one when into a "creepy area" or a secret room, but in general norms, this rule upholds petty strong.
This trend is not only on the part of the Metroidvania genre, but also present in the boss fight songs in games like Zelda, which also has a trademark on action RPG about that adventurous touch when you are exploring areas, but Hyper Light Drifter ain't focusing on that, if it were to be comparable to a Zelda, it would be closer to its darkest incarnation, Majoras Mask, than any of the 2d Zeldas out there.
A lot of people called this Metroidvania, a Zelda-like game, and I get it, you get some time puzzles, and some water temple hellhole and you immediately think of Zelda, but those sections of the game are less than a quarter of Hyper Light Drifter, and If I were to choose what inspiration has more pull into the game soundtrack, it would never be Zelda, as that saga of games had a lot of happy go around songs that Hyper would never have, it is just not related to this game style and aesthetics at all.
The songs of this game's soundtrack are passive, like a flowing river that slowly pulls with no resistance, and this feeling is also related to its concept of death because from time to time you get stressful notes as if the game was expecting you to pull you guard down and when you do, BAM, an enemy strikes you out of nowhere and the soundtrack reacts accordingly.

This river is not only managed by the soundtrack as you might think, the way the game looks and shows itself is a clear example of this because they focused heavily on a single art style, and in this style, we got our development, something that for most would be pointless but in this game, it makes perfect sense.
Hyper Light Drifter focuses on aesthetics its something a lot of gamers don't look closely into unless is in games like Shadow of the Colossus or Borderlands, and that is something that we should all regret a little bit because the SNES era had a spark of art that we were soon to abandon.
Games like Hyper Light Drifter are the ones rescuing that aesthetic feeling that era had, and with its mix of elements, it makes quite a few statements about how far this pixel art can go to be called a game or how far a game can go for it to become Art.
Wherever you are one of those few gamers like me who think that games are just another expression of Art, like cinema, music, and painting, that goes beyond some cinematic experience, or you just see it as a kind of entertainment that is born out of a mix of all that came before, let me tell you that this is a game you will enjoy.
I know that you will enjoy it because as long as you open your ears and eyes and be ready to get into the feeling ride this game is, you can get to experience something you rarely see, a multidisciplinary art that is based on two main sources, visuals, and music (aesthetics and soundtrack) and this is something you rarely see in this modern world.

This game is not for the weak-willed or the faint of heart, as its story is deeply embroiled with the experiences of its main creator Alex Preston in a way that is hard to explain, the Drifter is just an alter ego of him, someone that knows that has a disease that will kill him and still chooses not salvation, but change, not for himself to be noted, but for others, something that is unique and property of an artform.
Hyper Light Drifter had me living down the path of people like Alex or my middle brother, someone who had a sick childhood for diseases they could not control, with the only difference being that my brother eventually got cured of cancer, yet it still changed who he was permanently, and such change also was made itself present into Alex art.
Hyper Light Drifter was his initial chapter, but now he has a whole world to show us and with Hyper Light Breaker just around the corner as a test of his work and desires, Alex is barely accelerating to create the best he can for as long as he can before he's no longer capable, and that's something I admire.

Algunos juegos se centran en el estilo de arte, como Blasphemous, otros se centran en la jugabilidad como Dead Cells, pero Hyper Light Drifter del estudio Heart Machine se centra en un sentimiento y en este enfoque logra algo que rara vez se ha visto antes, el acto de conseguir que te sincronices en ese sentimiento, hasta el punto de que todo el juego se construye en torno a la idea de como hacerte sentir el juego.
La forma en que lo logra es fantástica, y está pensada únicamente en su arte, estética y música, y lo sé, es difícil escribir en un blog sobre música sin poder tocarla para ustedes, pero creanme, la banda sonora de este juego es diferente, a mis ojos es especial, hace que el juego se sienta vivo, como si fuera una especie de corazón latiendo y empujando vibraciones por las venas, así que acompañame en este viaje para sentir al Drifter.
Hecho en Canva por mi, a partir del arte promocional proporcionado en el kit de prensa colocado en el sitio Igdb, en conjunto al logo provisto por Abylightstudios.
Desde el momento en que el juego comienza obtenemos dos cosas, un protagonista silencioso y una historia contada por imágenes y sonidos unidos a una buena jugabilidad, no hay texto, no hay historia, sólo los sentimientos que esas imágenes y sonidos pueden comunicarnos y esto en sí mismo es algo que ya he visto antes, hace unas décadas, en la SNES.
El enfoque minimalista del juego se hace como una imitación de tiempos pasados, a medida que se construye lentamente y nos muestra hasta dónde puede llegar un juego sin apoyo en ninguna exposición establecida y sin volcado de información, nada que permita al jugador comprometerse emocionalmente con el Drifter, a diferencia de muchos juegos de hoy en día.
Esta sensación es algo difícil de quitar, una vez que te metes en él juego y empiezas a vibrar con él. Esto sucede porque te sumerges en el mundo del Drifter y en esa sensación de lucha contra lo inevitable, esto se logra en una lucha que encara a la muerte y para cuando veas a los titanes en la cinemática de introducción, podrás ver por qué lo digo.

Los "titanes" como yo decido llamarlos, son uno de los focos principales de esta historia ya que son la fuerza motriz de la destrucción en la narrativa de este juego, fueron las malvadas creaciones que asolaron todas las civilizaciones del mundo del juego, y están estrechamente relacionados con la enfermedad que está afectando a los vagabundos y a nuestro personaje principal.
Esta relación se establece por la energía y los colores rosados que poseen, y esto es fácil de averiguar ya que la únicas cosas que también poseen ese brillo rosa es la sangre de nuestro personaje principal, y el jefe final y constante acecho de "el Juicio".
Juicio también se destaca como un villano de una manera que nunca he visto antes, por el uso de la presencia, él es sólo allí, lento pero seguro como una representación de la muerte inminente del Drifter, y cómo lo está rodeando a él y a nosotros, todo el tiempo, a la espera de la cosecha. Este es un inserto algo obvio de la condición cardíaca congénita del programador principal, ya que el drifter siempre se muestra sosteniendo su pecho cuando está teniendo una visión, esto es algo que me di cuenta después de jugar el juego y buscar un poco sobre el nombre del estudio, ya que aparece como la razón principal para que se llama Heart machine.

Algo que me hizo dudar de este juego fueron las conversaciones en el mismo, ya que solo obtenemos imágenes que representan la historia y ninguna palabra real y es difícil no preguntarse como el juego aun así logra que entendamos su narrativa.
Para mi sorpresa, Hyper Light Drifter consigue transmitir su narrativa adecuadamente y con un estilo minimalista, ya que sólo necesita de una a tres imágenes y un efecto de sonido para transmitirnos lo que significa, consiguiendo un tipo de exposición que no es al que estamos acostumbrados.
Estas historias son leyendas que nos cuentan los personajes, como ocurre con el lagarto anciano o el bibliotecario, o advertencias sobre jefes enemigos, como ocurre con el guardián o el drifter con cuchillas y estas historias pueden mostrarnos el tipo de mundo que tiene este juego.
La mayoría de los jugadores recuerdan una que es diferente aunque no apoye para nada la trama, la historia del borracho en la ciudad principal, ya que son las tres primeras imágenes que llegamos a ver en la trama principal y sin embargo muestra mucho sobre este mundo y lo traicionero que puede llegar a ser, algo que más tarde descubriremos a lo largo de la historia del juego.

He profundizado mucho en los detalles que lo rodean, pero, ¿Qué hay de la música? Seguro que estaba presente en todos esos momentos que les he contado, pero no me estoy centrando mucho en ella, ahora es el momento de que nos sumerjamos en ella ya que es el elemento más grande que tiene este juego a su favor, el increíble uso y la reactiva colocación de la banda sonora como herramienta para hacernos sentir.
Un claro ejemplo de lo diferente que es la banda sonora de Hyper Light Drifter sería lo diferente que es del "género de origen" cuando miramos al género de las metroidvanias y los RPGs de acción, podemos ver fácilmente cómo la mayoría de las veces poseen una banda sonora de alta velocidad y llena de acción como en la mayoría de los títulos de Castlevania, como mucho cambiarían a una de ritmo lento cuando entran en una "zona espeluznante" o en una habitación secreta, pero en normas generales, esta regla se mantiene fuertemente.
Esta tendencia no sólo se da en el género Metroidvania, sino que también está presente en las canciones de los combates contra jefes en juegos como Zelda, que también tiene una marca registrada en los RPG de acción sobre ese toque aventurero cuando estás explorando zonas, pero Hyper Light Drifter no se centra en eso, si tuviera que ser comparable a un Zelda, estaría más cerca de su encarnación más oscura, Majoras Mask, que de cualquiera de los Zeldas 2d que hay por ahí.
Mucha gente lo llamó Metroidvania o un juego parecido a Zelda y lo entiendo, tienes algunos puzzles de tiempo, y un templo de agua infernal e inmediatamente piensas en Zelda, pero esas secciones del juego son menos de una cuarta parte de Hyper Light Drifter y si tuviera que elegir qué inspiración tiene más fuerz aen la banda sonora del juego, nunca sería Zelda, ya que esa saga de juegos tenía un montón de canciones alegres que Hyper nunca tendría, simplemente no está relacionado con el estilo y la estética de este juego en absoluto.
Las canciones de la banda sonora de este juego son pasivas, como un río que fluye lentamente sin oponer resistencia y esta sensación también está relacionada con su concepto de la muerte, porque de vez en cuando aparecen notas estresantes, como si el juego estuviera esperando que bajaras la guardia y cuando lo haces, BAM, un enemigo te golpea de la nada y la banda sonora reacciona en consecuencia.

Este rio no solo lo maneja la banda sonora como podrías pensar, la forma en que el juego se ve y se muestra es un claro ejemplo de esto ya que se enfocaron mucho en un solo estilo de arte, y en este estilo tenemos nuestro desarrollo, algo que para la mayoria seria sin sentido pero en este juego, tiene todo el sentido del mundo.
Hyper Light Drifter se centra en la estética, algo en lo que muchos jugadores no se fijan a no ser que sea en juegos como Shadow of the Colossus o Borderlands, y eso es algo que todos deberíamos lamentar un poco porque la época de SNES tenía una chispa de arte que muy pronto abandonaron.
Juegos como Hyper Light Drifter son los que rescatan ese sentimiento estético que tenía esa época, y con su mezcla de elementos, hace bastantes declaraciones sobre "hasta dónde" puede llegar ese pixel art para llamarse juego o hasta dónde puede llegar un juego para convertirse en Arte.
Si eres uno de esos pocos jugadores como yo que piensan que los juegos son una expresión más del Arte, como el cine, la música y la pintura, que va más allá de una experiencia cinematográfica, o simplemente lo ves como un tipo de entretenimiento que nace de una mezcla de todo lo anterior, déjame decirte que este es un juego que disfrutarás.
Sé que lo disfrutarás porque siempre y cuando abras tus oídos y tus ojos, y estés preparado para adentrarte en la sensación que te transmite Hyper Light Drifter, podrás llegar a experimentar algo que rara vez se ve, un arte multidisciplinario que se basa en dos fuentes principales, lo visual y la música (o estética y banda sonora) y esto es algo que rara vez se ve en este mundo moderno.
Este juego no es para los débiles de voluntad o los débiles de corazón, ya que su historia está profundamente envuelta con las experiencias de su principal creador Alex Preston de una manera que es difícil de explicar, el Drifter es sólo un alter ego de él, alguien que sabe que tiene una enfermedad que lo matará y aún así opta no por la salvación, sino por el cambio, no para sí mismo (resaltemos esto), sino por los demás, algo que es único y propio del arte.
Hyper Light Drifter me hizo vivir el camino de gente como Alex o mi hermano mediano, alguien que tuvo una infancia dificil por enfermedades que no podían controlar, con la única diferencia de que mi hermano finalmente se curó del cáncer, pero este aun cambió quién era permanentemente, y ese cambio también se convirtió en el arte de Alex.
Hyper Light Drifter fue su capítulo inicial, pero ahora tiene todo un mundo que mostrarnos y con Hyper Light Breaker a la vuelta de la esquina como prueba de su obra y deseos, Alex esta a penas acelerando para crear lo mejor que pueda durante todo el tiempo que pueda antes de que ya no sea capaz, y eso es algo que admiro.
Mucha gente nunca se atreve a perseguir sus sueños, pero al ver gente como el Drifter, que lo hace a pesar de lo que pase, es algo que eleva el sentir general de un juego a mis ojos. ¿Qué opinas, has podido ver hasta qué punto este juego profundiza en el arte?
