Grand Theft Auto is a video game saga created by the Rockstar Games studio, famous for its revolutionary open worlds and its focus on crime. The success of the saga is unquestionable, to the point that GTA V is the most profitable game of all time and that the trailer for GTA VI broke records for views on Youtube. After the successful releases of its first 3D games, GTA III and Vice City, Rockstar Games did not sit idly by. In 2004, the studio released Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, one of the most successful games in history.

The previous installments of the Grand Theft Auto saga were exclusively set in the world of the mafia, exploring different factions in their stories. Rockstar Games gave a blow to the table and left behind the formula that had given it success in the past. Its new installment would be based on the gang culture in North America in the 1990s, with San Andreas as the setting, a fictional county inspired by cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

The most ambitious map of its time
In Grand Theft Auto III or Vice City, the maps were relatively small and were divided into islands or zones that were unlocked as you progressed through the story. This worked well in its previous installments, but in San Andreas, Rockstar took the concept to another level, creating three large cities within the same map: Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas.
Los Santos: Inspired by Los Angeles, it is one of the most populous cities in the United States. Its streets depict gang disputes such as the Crips (Groove Street) and the Bloods (Los Ballas), as well as other Latin gangs like Los Aztecas.
San Fierro: Inspired by San Francisco, it has a strong presence of Latin and Asian-origin gangs such as the Triads. It is located on steep hills, featuring a mix of industrial areas, tourist spots, and cultural zones.
Red County: This is an area located on the outskirts of Los Santos and San Fierro. This region is characterized by its rural environment and several small towns such as Palomino Creek, Angel Pine, Blueberry, Dillimore, and Montgomery. It is home to dangerous groups such as bikers and rednecks.
Las Venturas: Inspired by Las Vegas, it is an area with large hotels, tourist attractions, and casinos operated by the mafia. At its center, there is a vibrant nightlife with illuminated signs, accurately representing the city of GAMBLING. Surrounding it is a vast desert land with small towns, including the famous Area 51.

En Grand Theft Auto III o Vice City, los mapas eran relativamente pequeños y estaban divididos en islas o zonas que se desbloqueaban conforme avanzabas en la historia. Esto funciono bien en sus anteriores entregas, pero en San Andreas, Rockstar llevó el concepto a otro nivel, creando tres grandes ciudades: Los Santos, San Fierro y Las Venturas.
Los Santos: Esta inspirada en Los Angeles, es una de las ciudades más pobladas de los Estados Unidos. En sus calles, se representan disputas de pandillas como los Crips(Groove Street) y los Bloods(Los Ballas) y otras pandillas latinas.
San Fierro: Esta inspirada en San Francisco, con fuerte presencia de pandillas latinas y de origen asiatico como las triadas. Esta ubicada en enpinadas colinas, siendo una mezcla de zona industrial, zonas turisticas.
Red County: Es una zona que esta en las afueras de Los Santos y San Fierro. Esta region esta caracterizada por ser de ambito rural y contar con varios pueblos como Palomino Creek, Angel Pine, Blueberry, Dillimore y Montgomery. Nos encontramos con grupos peligrosos como motociclistas y rednecks.
Las Venturas: Esta inspirada en Las Vegas. Es una zona con grandes hoteles, atracciones turisticas y casinos operados por la mafia. En su centro, hay una gran presencia nocturna, con carteles iluminados, representando bien a la ciudad del juego. A sus alrededores, es una basta tierra desertica con pequeños poblados y en la que se encuentra el area 51.
The story
GTA: San Andreas takes us to Los Santos, where CJ (Carl Johnson) returns to his hometown after his mother’s suspicious death. Upon arrival, he finds Groove Street, the gang he once belonged to, in decline. CJ’s main goal is to uncover the truth behind his mother’s murder while restoring Groove Street’s power and respect. He faces rival gangs, the corrupt anti-gang police division, and betrayals from old friends. The story includes several plot twists, taking us to cities like San Fierro, Las Venturas, and the rural areas of Red County. Along the way, we meet memorable characters like Big Smoke, Madd Dogg, The Truth, Catalina, and many more. In my review, I won’t go too deep into the story to avoid spoilers for those who haven’t played yet.

Al llegar, se encuentra con que Groove Street, la pandilla de su barrio, está en decadencia. El objetivo principal de CJ es obtener respuestas sobre el asesinato de su madre y, al mismo tiempo, restaurar el poder y el respeto de Groove Street. Enfrentandose a pandillas rivales, a la corrupta division de antipandillas de la policia y a traiciones de viejos amigos. One of the strongest points of GTA San Andreas is its soundtrack. We can enjoy it from the various radio stations. Thanks to this, I have been able to discover great successes that I still enjoy to this day.

Hop in a car in the back country and tune in to K-Rose, with its country music that fits perfectly with the country landscapes and rolling hills. Travel through the desert of Las Venturas listening to A Horse with No Name, intensifying the feeling of loneliness in the desert. Traveling through the most precarious areas of Los Santos, where the hip-hop of Radio Los Santos reflected the rawness and life in those streets.

Atributos y personalización del personaje
Una de las características más innovadoras que implementaron en el videojuego, fueron los atributos y la personalización. Quizá sea algo tipico de un RPG, pero hasta el momento no habia pasado con juegos de mismo genero.

Now we could visit the hairdresser and choose from several haircuts, go to a tattoo parlor to get Groove Street-related tattoos or buy clothes and jewelry in different stores to improve our sex appeal.

Uno de los puntos positivos del juego es la gran variedad de cosas que hay para hacer. Más allá de los trabajos clásicos de bombero, policia y paramédico, ahora contamos con un sinfin de opciones de entretenimiento. GTA: San Andreas was a true revolution from the moment it was released. The new mechanics and the setting in the rough streets of Los Santos were key to its massive success. We had a huge map full of life, where every corner offered something new to discover. From the streets of Los Santos to the quiet rural landscapes of Red County and the beautiful city of Las Venturas. All this was complemented by an exceptional soundtrack, which with its varied selection of radio stations immersed the player even more in the atmosphere of the 90s. We could customize our character as we liked, access a huge variety of cars and modify them, acquire properties, and enjoy various side activities, providing great freedom of action without having to spend all the time committing illegal acts. It is undeniable that Grand Theft Auto San Andreas was an important part of the childhood of many people under thirty and that, to this day, it continues to be enjoyed. Despite being released in 2004, GTA San Andreas has aged well. Its vast world, numerous activities and unforgettable soundtrack make it still enjoyable even for those who grew up with newer generation games. . Who hasn’t played GTA San Andreas at least once on their PS2 or in a CYBER?

GTA: San Andreas fue una auténtica revolución desde su lanzamiento. Las nuevas mecánicas y la ambientación en las crudas calles de Los Santos fueron clave para su éxito masivo. Contábamos con un mapa inmenso y lleno de vida, donde cada rincón ofrecía algo nuevo por descubrir. Desde las calles de Los Santos hasta los paisajes de Red County y la hermosa ciudad de Las Venturas. Todo esto se veía complementado por una excelente banda sonora, que con sus variadas estaciones de radio sumergía aún más al jugador en la atmósfera de los 90´s. Podíamos personalizar a nuestro personaje a nuestro gusto, acceder a una enorme cantidad de coches y modificarlos, adquirir propiedades y disfrutar de diversas actividades secundarias, brindando una gran libertad de acción con una jugabilidad poco repetitiva. Es innegable que GTA San Andreas fue una parte importante de la infancia de muchas personas menores de treinta años y que, hasta el día de hoy, sigue siendo disfrutable. A pesar de haber sido lanzado en 2004, GTA San Andreas ha envejecido de buena manera.
